I'd like to think that's going to change soon due to the trade war but with Vietnam and India coming up with subpar products, China actually ends up looking better in terms of quality.

>Like if we shat on items because >Made in China, were we being hard on them all this time considering how their manufacturing rivals are coming up with even worse products?
It's not really a question of quality is it? Not all the time. The stuff made in China is likely made on the same machines as are used in Switzerland, Germany or Japan.
The question is about cost and value. By using China the Swiss are making obscene margins on things that they would otherwise not be able to if they were actually domestically made.
The question is then are you happy getting ripped off, and to what degree you are willing to put up with it? A PRS's worth? An Aquaracer? Zulu GMT? Moonwatch?

I hate to break it to you, but none of the parts in your modern watch are that complex to manufacture in bulk.

The reality is that a part that might cost 50 bucks to make in the west can be made for 10 bucks in China. Either way, the margins are obscene when we're talking about watches that cost thousands of dollars.

At least you know enough to be able to even make that judgement. For over a century the Swiss have used "Swiss Made" as a mark of distinction to sell their watches, ironic considering that term's origin but that's another story.
Consider all the people who have it ingrained in their minds that any timepiece marked "Swiss" deserves the markup it has over say a Casio, Timex or Seiko or whatever.
>no I don't want X i'll buy this quality Tissot for double the price instead, after all it's "Swiss Made" just like Rolex and Patek!

That's why I said it's about degrees of being ripped off. You're being screwed either way for this unnecessary jewelry, but just how much do you want to be ripped? I'd like a Speedy mainly because I just think its cool, I also see the Aqua Terra in a similar light. I don't care much about the Swiss since in my eyes, they're all pretenders latching onto irrelevant prestige.

Grand Seiko and Citizen have come up with movements that are better than your average "Swiss Made" movements, even a $60 Miyota 9015 is already on the same level as most Swiss workhorses, minus the rotor issues inherent to ETA and Sellita movements, for only 1/3rd the price of those movements.

The more you read about horology, the more you realize "Swiss Made" is just a massive meme, and that's even before you check out the bullshit you see in Swatch.com that has that stamp on every one of their trash.

>Say what you want about Seiko but they at least elaborate if the movements or watches aren't made in Japan. Swiss companies lack such transparency.
It's not quite so clear cut.
Japanese laws aren't as bad as the in the Swiss example, but that depends on how you view it.
By law company can call a product "Made in Japan" if the following criterion are met (working off memory here):
>the item was made by a Japanese company
>in a factory owned by said company
>the factory's management is legit Japanese bloodofthesamurainohafu'sallowed and qc is overseen by them
This allows for example say a watch entirely made in Malaysia or wherever to obtain that coveted JDM designation if the factory it's made in is considered Japanese by virtue of the above. The actual SEA workers are considered robots and are thus irrelevant in a factory legally considered as rightful Nipponese infrastructure.

So those lesser JDM Seiko's might not necessarily actually be made in the Japanese archipelago. I once read that you had to buy a MarineMaster to really get something actually for real real made in Japan Japan, not "Japan" Japan. Grand Seiko however is most likely actually made in Japan as people have toured the factory and seen Seiko's vaunted fully integrated manufacture in action there, every part accounted for. I'd say the same goes for Citizen's top tier too but I've never investigated it.

This law allows for Japanese firms to sell basic, cheaper items to the Japanese public with a "Nippon Made for real" stamp because the nips will always try to buy their own goods rather than foreign ones. If you offer a foreign good and your competitor offers a JDM one then the latter is what will sell. If this wasn't in effect the Japanese public would be faced with the fact that actually most of the shit they buy comes from elsewhere and their economy, like their demographics, are in time proper fucked.
I don't believe for example a Presage's case etc., are actually MiJ.

Oh I don't think they're honorable, I initially thought of the inferiority complex angle as well, it reminds me of microbrands that are compelled to go hard on builds and quality since its the best they can go for due to not having the same prestige as Swiss brands, they therefore have to compete via quality alone due to lack of reputation.

Cadisen and San Martin doesn't use Sapphire and Titanium because they want to, they HAVE to in order to compete with big brands.

"every part accounted for" is clearly false. Grand Seikos have plenty of parts made abroad, especially the quartz and mechanical versions. Spring Drive is not made in large enough volume to necessitate a second factory.
Case blanks, crystals, bracelet components, movement blanks etc. Those are all made abroad more cheaply and finished in Japan.

Funny thing is, despite how cheap they are, making Quartz watches is way harder than making your own mechanical. The latter is just the same as building your own PC, even moreso when we live in a time where Miyota 9000 movements are <$70 per unit, Sapphire glass is affordable, and so are 316 L SS and Titanium.

No, I'm not using NHXX, I don't know why Seiko gets the praise it gets when the accuracy of their shit varies greatly. Fine. Some watches, like vintage ones, in particular, cannot be had brand new. Other watches have such brutal depreciation that buying them brand new is silly.

That said, I never put a used watch on my wrist unless I've cleaned it first, and if it's a watch on a strap, I get a new strap for it.

There's one piece you want above all the others, though.

Save up for that and buy it. Focus and do not deviate from this goal. Once you have your dream watch, you'll be able to more easily resist buying microshitters since you know it would be a step down and you want to wear your favorite watch anyway (which you now own.)

A date complication can be convenient.

Most of my watches are no-date and there have been plenty of times someone's asked me the date and I didn't have my phone handy.
>What's the date today?
>I don't know.

Yes it is. You can see on the dial. "Oysterquartz".
Back when quartz was still new technology and even considered more luxurious than a mechanical watch, Rolex invested, with a couple other Swiss makers, in developing a quartz movement.

>i didnt know that existed. i thought DJ was op + date complication. it's a beautiful watch. maybe renders dont do them justice, but modern rolex models seem too bulky and shiny

They made it between the 1960s and the early 2000s, but it was never super popular. The date complication a la the DJ came out in 1945 and it was always a luxury watch, while the Oyster Perpetual was a more middle-class watch. As time went on, though, the DJ was never that much more expensive than the OPD and came in a wider variety of bracelets, bezels and colors.

An interesting quirk is the OPD ref. 1530, which actually sported the Genta-esque angled case and bracelet before the Oysterquartz. They made it for two years between '75 and '77 before the Oysterquartz was released in '77. The theory was that the quartz movement wasn't ready yet, so they fitted some mechanical movements into the cases, They only made about 1,500 of these.

>why would you ask us
To get some input, maybe everyone will like the same one and in time I'll start seeing why, or someone will point out how something would look totally off when worn in a certain situation or with a certain outfit.
>just get the one you like
I like them all, though for different reasons, that's why I'm undecided.
The SS with the green dial is by far the most sober and would go well with most of my outfits, though the green kinda sorta stands out so it seems exaggerated for a black suit, and that tone of green would just look off with a really casual outfit composed of super highly saturated colors.
It also has the best legibility of the three.
The RG with the grey palms is a bit more eye-catching but not by far, it's more formal so despite the kinda sorta playful pink it would also go well with more formal outfit while still being very usable with a casual grey wool pants and a white polo shirt or floral half sleeve button up, though the grey and pink certainly make it more difficult to pair.
The YG with the texture dial looks easier to style but it doesn't have a grey palm dial and the yellow one I don't like very much because it's a similar but slightly different color and a very different texture, so it might not be very noticeable from afar but from the distance I would look at it to read the time it would look terribly busy I'm afraid, certainly more so than with grey palms.
Two tone YG also looks like I wanna show off, and I don't want to show off that much, so while it would be easier to pair with outfits because of the color it would be a tad harder to find something that's not too casual to avoid looking like I'm cosplaying a character from The Sopranos nor too formal to avoid looking like I'm cosplaying a freshly graduated Goldman Sachs new hire.

Not for nothing, but the older, hollow link bracelets were lighter and more comfortable. Sure, they were rattly, to adjust the fit required a toothpick, and they would stretch out after about 20 years but comfort counts too.

sounds to me like you like the RG the most. just go for it my man. to me palm trees on dial look like novelty that wont age good. if i was buying for myself i would try to find something versatile that is both "speaking" to me but also wont look ridiculous in 20 years. my rule of thumb for any of the funky looking watches is this imaginary scenario i made up in my mind that is somewhat based on true events... im at the funeral, dressed sharp and wearing the watch in question. i go to the family in front of the chapel to offer my condolences. do i leave the watch on, or put it in my pocket because i know there is possibility that its looks could imply that i tok the opportunity to show off, that i have no real desire to be here, or that it could be considered even offensive and dishonest.
if the watch doesnt pass the funeral test then i wont consider it for my daily watch at all, because at my line of work there is a lot of situations just like that and i dont even want to think - oh wait, i should take my watch off before i deliver this news. someone else might not think this to be even a consideration when buying a watch.. at the end of the day, everyone is different

If someone wants a watch that is quintessentially german, it would probably be something very complicated and overengineered by lange
If someone wants an american watch, it would be apple or android smartwatch, different from any other kind of watch and they dont care.
Japanese watch? Probably something high tech and very ugly (some kind of digital casio with radio waves, bluetooth, wifi, camera and idk what, i dont like them so i dont know much about them)
But what if i wanted the best, most iconic chinese watch. Not a copy, not something 1 of 1 or extremely eyewatering expensive, just the best all around chinese watch for about 10k, maybe 20k? What are my options?

You realize that the Hublot is 45mm and 15mm thick right? I have an 8” wrist and 42mm is my limit.

Im in love with the aesthetics of this watch but it only comes in 36mm. Anyone have any suggestions for something similar under 1k in an adult size?
