I don’t have a G Shock but I kinda want one for a thrasher watch. Should I get the cheap ass Chinese/Thailand DW5600E or the much nicer made in Japan GW5000U?

The main difference in the day to day is how it feels on the wrist. The DW-5600 is all plastic and light, the GW-5000 has a steel case and screwdown back which feels weighty and solid. Ideally you would try them both and choose but if that's not an option get the 5600, it will get the job done. The 5000 should be an informed decision, you want the metal case with DLC coated back and a softer band. Personally I like the anniversary squares because I like the construction of the 5000 with the basic module from the 5600.

I really despise digital watch buttons. I've used one digital watch ever that wasn't absolutely intolerable for changing functions, and it was a Timex Datalink USB that had a digital crown. But the watch itself was just too big for my tiny wrists, so despite having the best module ever put into a watch, I had to give up on it.

A dive bezel lets me set a timer in 2 seconds.

I need the piece of shit to not fog up and die when used in wet environments like to time a sailing race start.
I need the piece of shit stopwatch to count more than an hour. (Hell, in fact I need multiple stopwatches but at least I got a timer and 5 alarms)
I need the piece of shit to not beep to everyone around me every time I press a button.
Since it's going to be my only watch, I want the piece of shit to not look completely childish no no in a business suit type of a more formal environment.
For me it's Casio Royale. (Ideally with SKXMOD to real steel & sapphire)
Only improvement I can think of is if all this somehow came in an A700 package. Also some small improvements to make the radar more visible: Make the inner ring hours only, the outer ring minutes only, and forgo the seconds.
Oh, Royale also has GMT. It's better tha on a Rolex, and I believe Patek too. Actually useful to deal with international customers that pop up once in a while.

It was discovered years ago that Swatch was getting Omega's bracelets, and perhaps other parts, made in china. Swatch run factories in asia and since the laws on what can legally be labelled as "swiss made" have an intentional loophole that allows chinese work to count as swiss, it's all too easy to assume that lower end swatch brands like certina, tissot etc., are basically entirely made in china and thus to worry about how far up the swatch ladder this cost cutting practice goes. How much of a basic ETA movement is made in swatch's chinese factory. Perhaps everything but the hairspring. It's known that ETA's "swiss" quartz modules are made in the swatch owned thailand factory. It's more or less an open secret in the industry.
The warning signs were there all the way back in the early 00's when Franck Muller was caught using, legally, russian movements as "swiss". At that time swatch's china operation wasn't operational so collectors shrugged that off as just another sign of FM's fall, not realizing how pervasive it was to become.

It wasn't until people started documenting getting bracelets direct from omega boutiques with easily removeable tags saying "made in china", which they were obviously not meant to be shown (while the bracelet is stamped "swiss") that collectors started to get nervous. Long time omega independent repairmen in america were also documenting how they were getting parts from swatch with the invoice stating origin: China.

Essentially, if Omega's bracelets are chinese, what else? Cases? Dials?Hands? Whole thing? Lower end brands are most likely entirely chinese and maybe only assembled in switzerland, if that. Wages are just too high for anyone to believe a lowly certina or tissot is actually swiss.

Basically, there's many reasons why say rolex has eclipsed omega in the eyes of collectors and the nebulous nature of the latter's true origin is one of them. This is behind Moser's seething at the disingenuous nature of "Swiss Made".

If you want to know more, you can dig. Omega's not the only brand. Doxa was caught red handed using a chinese OEM for their entire watch line. I've spoonfed you enough. Convincing (you) is not worth the effort nor my intention.

But if anyone lurking ITT wants to buy a modern omega watch and part of your desire for it, or rather what you're willing to pay for it, stems in any part from the supposed "swissness" of its manufacture, then I cannot recommend them to you.
If you don't give a shit where it's made and you just want your Moonwatch or Bond Seamaster regardless then enjoy your upcoming purchase!

But if the notion of potentially paying swiss labor prices for cheaper, chinese labor priced handiwork rankles you even slightly, then I recommend holding off as the Swatch Group does not inspire trust due to its factory presence in places where labor is far cheaper than in Switzerland.

Total cost is somewhere between 100-250 bucks, depending on what you want. Plus, you can live safe in the knowledge that if your cheap +/-1SPD movement does die in a decade, you can swap it out in 10 minutes for 35 bucks.

>Essentially, if Omega's bracelets are chinese, what else? Cases? Dials?Hands? Whole thing?
Ive been tild that the most parts arrive from china in its raw form and they get finished in switzerland and apparently that makes them legally swiss made. China sends a finishwd case and that is considered a raw material like a 1 kg piece of stainless steel. They touch it up on the polishing machine and boom - swiss made case - lagally speaking. Not all 100% of parts need to be swiss made for watch to be considered swiss made. For this reason omega claims the dial is only 1 part because it is glued together and movement for example is 100 different parts. This way they can legally bxpass the law and swiss gov isnt allowed to disclose any details. The dial is something that requires the most time and man hours so they are 100% made in china where labour is cheap af. I dont mean they piece it together in switzerland, they get the finished product, packaged and ready to put into the case (which they got in the same shippment, but need to polish up a bit. There's more to it than the 60% that other guy keeps crying about. Going through >>17704776 there's a part which allows Swiss companies to bypass the 50% value of the parts bit by using a certified country such as Hong Kong. Nothing is made in HK these days as it's all done in Shenzhen and shipped back across. Swatch is so large and has factories in China, other companies do not. Rolex doesn't. JLC doesn't. Does that mean TAG is actually Swiss made? Doubt it lol. Considering the high probability that Swatch's basicbitch tiers are all 99% Chinese made, otherwise how else could they make them affordable to lower middle class wanting muh swuss maid, how can you even begin to trust their higher tiers? If Omega had chink components Longines surely has more, that's the problem with the level system they've enforced for their brands. It's too easy to consider that Swatch, whose already getting all sorts of parts made for their lower tiers, to also get them made for Omega at the same bargain basement prices. Why wouldn't they? They already have the operation set up and would be stupid to throw away money like that. Is nothing sacred then? I'd say that Breguet is 100% Swiss, or as PP, VC or AP and that's only because people have toured their manufacture and this guy >>17704161 considered Breguet as his baby. I'd like to think he didn't want to sully it but you never know. All comes down to trust. Can you trust Omega after finding that they are known to get bracelets made elsewhere yet stamp them "Swiss"?

That's why it comes down to trust. If you can find documented footage of a factory that is shown making every component, like what's been reported about Rolex, JLC and the higher tiers etc., then you can have a greater measure of trust than in say Certina or TAG or in this case Omega which has had known Chinese parts.
To date there's been no indication that say Rolex, JLC, the "trinity" or anyone above them use chink made stuff. You can only work with what you know, and what's known about Omega, and Swatch as a whole, kinda stinks.
