>This is my first watch and I'd rather not drop so much on a watch just yet. I might find that I don't like watches.
Then your best bet is to buy a watch that is the most assured of retaining its value. If you find you don't like watches, you can always sell it and not lose much, if any, money (or maybe even make money.)

Rolex Submariner, Day-Date, GMT-Master II, and Daytona are all safe bets (though the odds of getting a GMT-Master or Daytona are slim.)
Patek Philippes are expensive but hold their value very well.

Apart from that, it's mostly small, independent watchmakers that are out of your price range (like $60k plus)

>> No.17695359

>>17695357
There has never been one. Since the Bond-Seamaster style debuted, its dive version always had the valve.
The GMT version of the late 90s generation did not have a helium escape valve, but that watch has been discontinued for about 20 years.

>Bill Gates wears a Duro. Bill Clinton loves G-Shocks.
Gates is a dweeb. Clinton was known for a Timex Ironman, not a G-Shock, while in office and his collection is quite extensive. He's been seen wearing a bunch of different Cartiers, Panerais, Roger Dubuis, JLC, Franck Muller. You can certainly question the tastefulness, but the man clearly likes watches.

>> No.17695408

I'm just saying that you don't need to spend a lot of money to see if you like wearing a watch in the first place. A quartz Seiko can fit that bill.

Some people buy a Rolex to because to memorialize "making it", but that doesn't seem to be the other guy's situation. He just wants to see if he even enjoys having one on his wrist.

>a question for people whose only watch is some kind of manual wind sports watch that they wear every day and have been for at least a year. does it get annoying? i've been contemplating lorier gemini, but manual wind is putting me off

The process of manually winding a watch is not annoying at all. It's 10 seconds in the morning before you put it on.
I actually prefer manual winding to automatic. Manually wound watches are usually thinner (even sports watches). Plus, if you don't want to wear it over the weekend, you can just wind it in the morning on Saturday and Sunday, it will be waiting for you Monday.

With an auto, you have to wear it every day or let it wind down. Yes, I know you can wind an auto manually, but not every automatic movement likes it. Manually winding the 7750 series chronograph movements, for example, always carried a risk of breaking the winding mechanism.

With a manual when it's fully wound, you can feel it hit the stopping point. It just won't go anymore. You'd really have to crank it to break it. It's tougher than you think.

Automatics are just better. I'm tired of retards who buy watches to leave them in boxes acting like there's any real merit to manual winding.

It's fine as a feature, but the space savings are seriously minimal. The reality is that most watches are just thicker than they actually have to be for retarded reasons. My watch, out of the box, was 13.5mm thick. It's now 11.6mm thick.

It's not easy. I try to stick to a specific list of features and style to ensure I don't end up with my own G-Shock store. I don't like selling shit but I was able to downsize by gifting a bunch of watches when I had too many. I have been doing pretty well, last watch I bought was a year and a half ago and I got one as a gift half a year ago. It has helped that G-Shock releases have been really underwhelming recently. There are a few watches in my horizon right now but none of them meet my criteria. The new DW-6600PC-5 is only $100 and one of the best colors they have released in over a year. It's hard to resist but I'm trying to stick to my feature list.

very different watches, weird how you are choosing between those 2.
omega is the smart choice. extremely versatile, classic design that will never be out of place. it seems like the perfect choice if you will have only one watch and wear it for the rest of the life
monaco is so in your face bold and unique. wearing it makes a statement. so does the aqua terra, but its is that the owner is most likely the cautious and calculated person, maybe even conformist
i like both, but i like the monaco a little bit more. if i had both i would wear monaco a lot more often im sure
