>What is this obsession with finishing?
To understand why the langelet was seething last thread you have to understand that to them finishing is the be all, end all and only important part of a watch. And that's because that's all Lange has to offer.
Lange do nothing else but create and beautify their movements. The entire rest of the watch, aka the business end you actually look at, is outsourced. Dials, hands, cases. It's a house of German engineering autists who're adept at making pretty little machines, not whole watches. This is why langelet screeches so about
>muh finishing
See pic related. The marks denote Lange's casemakers. SUG makes cases for Sinn and some lesser German makes as well.

I don't know about the fifth one. Normies wouldn't recognize an Explorer or Daytona immediately as a Rolex.

You could argue the Oyster Perpetual, since every sports Rolex is descended from it. (add a date, it's now a Datejust, add a lumed dial and now it's an Explorer, add a dive bezel it's now a Submariner, etc)

On average I think ALS look nicer than Patek.
For example I'd get a Saxonia Date over any Calatrava. I also think there are no ugly ALS while there are a shit ton of ugly Patek.

The thing is, Patek has the Worldtimer, the Ellipse, the 5327 (pic related) and those annual calendars with the day/date/month windows lined up. I also have a soft spot for the vintage Aquanaut (even though I'll admit they're kind of ugly). They're still grail tier IMO, at least for me.

I agree. Patek makes a lot of fairly uninspired watches. (they make ~70,000 annually, how could they not.) When they make a good looking watch like the 5270 though, it's always a home run.
Meanwhile, ALS's designs are all pretty nice, but they never get beyond pretty nice. Better than a lot of Pateks, but nothing close to the great Pateks.

I attribute this to Patek having so many designs over their century-plus of watchmaking. Lange's only been around for a couple decades and has been pretty conservative in its design language.

There is no arguing. Patek finishing is subpar for the price. It has been for the last 15 years or so and has been well documented on more serious enthusiast forums. If you want very high end finishing you shouldn’t buy Patek (unless you’re buying a chiming watch), it’s really that simple. You can’t make as many watches as they do while finishing to an extremely high degree, they don’t have enough skilled watchmakers.

The only silver lining that could come out of this, and I'm not sure whether or not it really is one for my own part, is that this could break the sportswatch, or rather divewatch, stranglehold over watch designs. I'd like dress watches to be referred to as just "watches" again and all, but the prices on smaller dress watches right now is really good because nobody really wants them. I suppose I'd better buy now before any major shift in fashions robs me of a good deal.

First of all, the very fact that their movements are made of solid gold makes them unique in the industry; it's neither easy nor cheap to make parts like that.
Journe also dares with manufacturing processes that most other companies are afraid to touch, because it's so difficult to achieve a good result. (Like the CB dial, the automatons, the tantalum, the resonance, the vertical tourbillon picrel, etc...) He is a fucking genius and their watches prove it.
Because of the success of FPJ a new generation of independent watchmakers is enthusiastically received by collectors today.
And imho their watches are beautiful.

It's not the value, it's the relative fragility. These things aren't Rolexes. Consider that the Royal Oak, particularly the ultra thin jumbo, has been known to break through mere appaluse or from gesticulating a little too quickly or forcefully. Royaloaks are delicate dress watch movements in a sportswatch skin. From what I've heard of FPJ, they are not daily wearers unless you are behind a desk all day not really moving very much. Too easy to break, a hassle to repair because only FPJ's workshop can do it.

Quartz hit immediately after.
The Japs flooded the market with cheap watches, while many of the legacy companies died.
The remaining legacy companies got very conservative with design until the watch re-emerged as a luxury product so they started selling to the wealthiest group of customers: Boomers. What do Boomers want more than anything? To remain young forever and watches that look like they're from the 60s remind Boomers of their youth.

There's no incentive to design for anyone else. Gen X'ers aren't a large enough group to matter, millennials are mostly broke, and Zoomers know that watches are a joke.

GPS is kind of sucky when you're inside but it's cool to have multiple flawed time adjustment methods together. I don't know exactly what you mean with "fully solar powered" but these watches don't need a battery change for a couple decades. If you mean "no-battery" they would still need a capacitor which ages and needs to be replaced, it's better to have a replaceable battery capacitor like we have now. Every company reuses the same movements across different price ranges but it would still be cool if Casio matches their high end models with high end modules. They definitely need to get a HAQ.

That's unfortunately what's happening in the luxury market.
Back even just 10-15 years ago, you could get a used Speedmaster Pro for about 1500-2000USD or a used Sub for about 5000USD.

Now it just feels like a competition to see who can spend the most money but when that happens, no one's happy. The speculating hype has put everyone super-aware of every watch's retail/resale values and the quality of a watch seems based solely on that now.
I.e. only a couple Rolexes, Pateks, some APROs, and some indie makers' watches actually apprectiate in value, so those are the only ones "worth buying".

Hard to say.

The Speedmaster is definitely more iconic, buta little antequated.
The Daytona's movement is better (in the high-tech sense). The watch also is smaller and thinner so it's more wearable.

At the same time, the Speedy is much, much cheaper. Both hold their value well, though the Speedmaster takes an initial depreciation hit. If you buy a used Speedy from Japan, you'll never take a loss selling it when you get bored of it. The Daytona's screwdown pushers give it better water resistance but make using the chronograph kind of inconvenient.
