Those are considered the low culture part of JP, friend. They're loud and overt, just like anything in any culture that's designed to pander to the lowest common denominator.

The counterpoint to your comment is that the GS shown in that pic isn't even the most well known GS, there's a reason why when GS gets brought up, the two models that tend to pop up in the conversation is the Snowflake or the Omiwatari and neither aren't exactly maximalist.

We are on anonymous board so I will share a honest opinion with you my wt friends. I like watches, but not as much as I like the status. With that in mind, I need a watch suggestion. It has to be higher status in eyes of the normies vs omega, breitling and hublot all of which are sub 5000 shitters so it shouldnt be too hard to agree on which watch manufacturer trumps those.
Obvious choice would be a gold rolex, but the tricky part of my request for suggestions is, Id like to spend as little as possible

There are a number of brands that you would just never even hear of if you weren't personally interested in doing research on watches on some level. Maybe this isn't the case un Europe or Asia, but in America you're not going to run into someone wearing an Orient or Hamilton or Laco or Squale who doesn't know anything about watches. It just doesn't happen. But you'll run into plenty of people wearing Rolexes that just wanted a Rolex because they know the name, or a Casio or Timex for the same reason.

Your sense of scale has been warped. That's about 200 bucks.
A shitty automatic movement like the NH35 costs about €30-40 to a customer, so they cost the company a fraction of that. Stamping out a simple steel case, cheap bracelet, etc, doesn't cost anything when you do it at Orient's production volume.
That watch probably didn't cost more than €10 to produce.

You don't flex your watch on normies. They won't fucking know what it is and if you tell them how much it costs, they aren't impressed, they think you're nuts.

To flex with a 10k, you have to find that small group of people that:
a.) knows what it is
b.) are willing to pay max. 8k for a watch (so they don't think 10k is absurd)

By pretending Quartz and Smartwatches don't exist. One can argue Smartwatches are doing way more damage to mechanicals way more than Quartz ever did, but considering it's only really hurting fashion brands like Fossil, one can use the piracy argument in this situation wherein the people who go for Smartwatches never really had an interest with watches to begin with so it's arguable they're hurting sales.

Their pricing makes sense once you realise Orient is recycling A LOT of their designs, hence they also have a gazillion watches in their catalogue that are built from a relatively small set of parts.

If you look at these:
>>17673397
Mako bracelet, Ray seconds hand, Neo 70's minute and hour hands. Standard movement.
They use the same parts for years maybe even decades when I look at their Tristar collection.

Seiko is doing the same thing with their 5 collection, hence their previously also cheap prices. Only difference why Orient is right now much better value-for-money is because they haven't fully adjusted their prices yet and are still in the middle of the process, whereas the Seiko 5 range was already fully reevaluated.

You can expect Orient to stay cheaper than Seiko on average but the new Orient releases are already much more expensive than the one's from just 2-3 years ago.
Compare pic related the new Panda solar chronograph with the Neo 70's one that came out 2 years; same movement, same quality, but roughly 50% markup.

My grandfather was the opposite. I never knew he was wealthy because he lived frugally like most of the WW2/Great Depression generation. He worked as an engineer with some defense contractor. I never looked at his watch because it just looked like the same cheesy gold watch that every person of that age wears. (Plus, a child that cares that much about watches is probably not normal in the head.)

A few years after he died I asked my father if he still had his dad's watch. He still did, in a box with all of Grampa's other stuff.
Turns out it was a gold Patek, an automatic Calatrava on a bracelet. Large for the time at 35mm.

I thought it would have been nice to be able to talk about watches with him but then I realized he probably didn't actually care about watches. Very few people actually do.

>With quartz you only sacrificed some precision that the average person doesn't need anyways but smart watches have actually useful features.

Name one.

Smart watch is just a tiny little smartphone taped to your wrist with all the cons of a smartphone and none of the benefits of a watch.

Why would i want another phone? I already have the phone. An inaccurate pulse meter has no value to me and having to tap or click or flick to activate the display is a pain in the ass.

The whole point of wristwatches and the reason they killed the pocket watches is that you can simply look at your wrist and know the time and the day of the week no fuss, no fiddling and you never have to charge them.

A mechanical watch runs off the auto-rotor as long as you're wearing them. A casio runs for 10 years on one battery, a solar watch runs as long as it's exposed to any light. I don't need an another gimmicky gadget that requires paying attention to

>Hurrr but you can pay with NFC

Probably but even their "entry-level" models still have a shitload more hand finishing than comparables from most anything else in the prior tier. Compare the movement on a basic Saxonia Thin to a Calatrava if you want to have a laugh.

I honestly think that infographic is probably bullshit though, I have no idea how they arrived at their figures and it's really misleading to just say the holy trinity takes 30-99 hours when they make everything from basic 2 hander dress watches up to métiers d’art pieces.

Hey faggots, as lots of you are normies who just want to flex (imo the most mentally sane reason to like watches) ive made this guide to get a watch to flex on other normies and spend the least while doing so:
>STATUS WATCH BUYING GUIDE
Any fag who wants a status watch should buy a steel 3 hander (cheapest to maintain and buy type of watch) from the most expensive brand he can afford from only these four brands and in this order Rolex>hublot>omega>tag
Any other brand has less brand recognition than tag while costing more or is more expensive than rolex, which is the king of status watches.
Anything other than Rolex should be bought used.
Search the cost of the watch in chrono24 in the watch collection section, never pay more than this.
BONUS: If you are young (<30) or you live in a country poorer than the USA, quartz tags are your best and only option (f1 and aquaracers)

I had a small g-shock as a kid with EL, an F91w and a royale to compare. The f91w is actually visible in the dark, albeit one sided lighting just looks ugly. The royale has a powerful lighting in a nice orange color, but i don't like that it's uneven bright at the bottom and dim at the top, the EM glow was cool because it's uniform across the entire screen and it also made a high pitch barely audible electric PIIIIIIIIIIP sound, i swear i could hear it as a child.

Not my cup of tea, unfortunately. I'm just trying to keep my watch collection at three and all GMT. It's just that I can't recommend them in good faith either because, again, I haven't met a person whose Tag watches haven't failed on them. I used to think that was something that was exaggerated online.

Best part is, since he'd rather a Moonwatch, there's no cucking required.

Rolex bros on the other hand...

Like i said the reason they are slowly replacing the EL backlit models is that they are known to fail overtime, it's even mentioned in the manuals.

The new led modules in the gshocks evenly illuminate the whole display and don't loose brightness overtime.

Thoughts on the new Seiko GMT/Diver watches? Thinking about picking up either Black or Green but not sure if its worth the price they are asking.

I'm iffy about them mainly because it's in the price range of second hand Prospex GMT watches equipped with Spring Drives.

It gets worse if you're a GMT nutter like me since these releases are going to be using 6R54 which is pretty much in the same ballpark as the Miyota 9075 with the sole tradeoff being Seiko having 31 more hours in terms of power reserve. Microbrands offer better value overall due to more dial variety while offering the same accuracy and materials.

I'm talking a lot of shit but by god, that limited edition arctic blue dial is hard to resist.

Nvm it is a true gmt. Now they just need to make an explorer ii homage that isn't grand basedko and less than 2k with that movement and I would consider it

I can say the same about myself but yea even I can't defend this. There's a ton of Microbrands that only cost 1/3rd of what this shitter offers but with so much more.

Like even as a Seikofag, I'd rather go for the Mido Ocean Star GMT for $500 less and with better accuracy(-2/+8 seconds).

Omega Speedy and call it a day, it is not sub $5000. Probably the easiest watch for people to know you have a $7k watch on your wrist.

I actually copped it because of the movies just like I copped the Seamaster from the Pierce Brosnan days.
If the Hamilton used on Interstellar was actually available I would have pulled the trigger too.
