Finally got my first big boy watch, appreciate the help from anons in previous threads over the past few weeks.

My dealer had the green and medium santos in the shop, and they looked beautiful (especially the green model) but it just didn't match my needs right now. I think those two would be good watches for someone who already had a collection since they don't seem as versatile as the white.

Stingray would be cool, but I don't think Cartier makes one and those DeLugs straps are actually dogshit. The Santos has a proprietary strap attachment system and DeLugs uses the same version that the rep factories in China use. They're very rattly and have poor fitment.

To make this actually funtional you could make it a sandwich dial and the hours and minutes jump. Little cut outs for the minute track and cut outs for the hour indices. Rotating disk change the color of the indicies and minutes. The dot from the question mark can rotate for the second hand. Someone who doesn't know how the watch tells the time won't necessarily get it.

I've had no problems with it and wear it as a daily watch. It's accurate to +1 sec/day, it's never missed a beat.
I had it serviced after ten years because some dirt had gotten into the reversing mechanism and it felt a little crunchy...and it had been ten years of near-constant wear. I probably wear mine harder than most.

Maybe some of the more complicated versions are more fragile, but mine's a simple hand-winding movement, so I'd have to try driving nails with it or something to really fuck it up.

Yeah, I did. I've since sold the watch. (It was a great watch, but it wasn't for me.)

I was very disappointed in the quality, all around. If the proprietary fit wasn't great, that's one thing, but the leather wasn't that good, the stitching was kind of rough. Thank goodness it wasn't a full-custom job because otherwise I would not have been able to return it.

Yes, I do have a Reverso chronograph and it's a very sturdy and reliable watch for around ten years and counting, with no service also. In fact, with modern oils, hairsprings and antishocks, most old developments to prevent damages are in fact preatty much redundant unless you're actually pushing a button at the exact time of the hit.
I gave my watch a hard hit against the surface of a marble table like 5 years ago and nothing happened. I was sure I did some damage the moment I heard the hit, but my watch showed me otherwise.

Thoughts on this idea? I like this idea but it's still legible if you're smart enough and figure out why some indices are a different color. You could have a secret button on the watch which when pressed would work the same way as this concept and turn some disks under the dial into place to show the time for a few seconds and then hide the time again. That would be an interesting complication.

Do you remember the VW Phaeton? It was a luxury sedan, had all the amenities. It was huge, and powerful, with a 12 cylinder engine. Being a full-size luxury car, it also cost like 80 grand back in 2004.

It was a flop. Mostly because no one took the idea of VW and luxury seriously.

That Ward is the same thing. Yes, it looks cool and it's the kind of complication you only see in 50 grand watches, but at the end of the day, they just bolted a chiming module onto a Sellitta SW200 and it's still finished to budget watch standards.

Yeah, the base model Bentleys had the W12 engine and the Phaeton's platform was nicked from the Continental, IIRC.

But that brings up the same issues in terms of the oxymoron that is "affordable luxury".
Bentley owners will not be impressed. Other VW owners will scoff that you paid THAT much for a VW. The owners of other 80k cars will wonder what possessed you to not buy the superior Merc S-Class or anything else in that price range?

With the CHWard, the question becomes "How much extra is that complication worth?" The watch is 3800 dollars. A titanium watch with an SW-200 movement can be had for 500-600 bucks. (A module they bought. They didn't design it. Meistersinger used it first.) People who don't know anything about watches will be delighted by the little ding you hear on the hour.

That's a question that all the buyers have to ask themselves. And since they sell out, obviously, lots of people think it's worth it.

I agree there is, to an extent. The problem is that the complication and the quality get conflated.

A 500 dollar Chinese tourbillon is in no way, shape, or form, in the same league as a Breguet Classique, even though they both have a tourbillon.

It frustrated me a little that people like that talking hands watch guy was saying that this was the equivalent of an MB & F Legacy Machine. It's just styled to very obviously look like one. He was probably being hyperbolic, but if you hold the two side by side, you can tell they very much are not the same thing.

I know that it's no even comparable to the cheapest one available from a reputable watch brand.

Nah, just a typo on my part. He's still alive. Though he did get pretty fucked up. He's stone-deaf and has these weird shakes and tremors.

The post in >>17669473 makes me think about watches like the Baltic microrotor. It's obviously not a Patek but I think it's impressive they're able to democratize it a bit, make something that while not the same under scrutiny, looks close enough to the layman. It's like a good gateway to this kind of world you don't usually see in person until you're orders of magnitude more wealthy. Also I think it holds up better than the tourbillons but that's probably my post hoc purchase justification speaking.

I just want a watch for daily use, I don't care if it stops working in 5 years since they're insanely cheap and I might have enough money for a better watch when that day comes, or just buy another cheap movement and replace it and move on.

I do like and admire the fact that a watch can work without any source of external energy, and how I am wearing a small machine that helps me to arrive in time, and if a $35 movement can do that work It's fine for me.

The alternative I have in mind is the slightly rarer Speedy Reduced variant that has a different dial, sapphire, 100m wr and an actually good bracelet. My wristlet brother Tim Mosso pointed out it pretty much has the same specs as a Daytona too. The new Speedy Pro wears really well but I'm easily influenced and spending too much time has convinced me it's a reddit watch so if I get a Speedy I want it to be a slightly less common variant to satisfy the contrarian in me.

(much) better quality finishing, better quality materials, better fine details, more reliable movements
there are also other things that make them different but not objectively better, namely brand recognition
if you're want a Rolex to look like you can afford one, a homage won't have the same effect and in that case you're better off buying a good replica
homages though offer you a lot more looks for a fraction of the price, you're going to be more likely to wear them because you're not going to be so scared of damaging them, and if that's how you want to present you can say stuff like "yeah I'm a watch enthusiast but I'm not going to pay 20% over list price for a 14270 when I want the 6610 look and can get it for a fraction of the price"

Take my advise with a grain of salt since I've only been in this hobby for 4-5 months. That said,

>are they worth buying?

No. And that even goes to the Seagull 1963 as well which is regarded as the main workhorse for Chinese watches since they might come off as great value in terms of quality to cost ratio but where the actual cost is gonna hit you is when the movement dies. It costs more than a brand new Seagull so you might as well throw your old one and buy a new one. Tongji is roughly the same as the NH35/NH34(-/+30s vs Seiko's -20/+35) but it's unfortunately not as reliable as NH35, hence why even CN aliexpress brands such as Cadisen prefer going for NH35s instead.

>what makes a $20000 automatic watch better than a $100 NH35 automatic watch?

Better accuracy and overall build quality. A reliable Japanese workhorse movement tries to stay within -/+ 30s, in comparison, Swiss movements such as the ETA 2824 can be regulated to up to -/+ 4 per day, essentially the same level of accuracy as Omega's Coaxial Chronometer and Rolex's Superlative Chronometer. There's also the build quality as well, if you have a macro lens, owning an AP is an absolute delight.

That said, from owning one thus far, the Miyota 9000 series can come close to ETA accuracy. My better uses a Miyota 9075 and it hardly loses or gains a second per day to the point that the two people I've inquired about this have mentioned that I might have been incredibly lucky.

>>do you own a chinese "omage" watch? how is it?

No, mainly because most Chinese Aliexpress brands, despite using superior materials like Titanium and Sapphire glass with NH35s, tend to copy AP and Rolex designs, which are two brands I'm just not really a fan of. I have far more faith(and respect) for their SEA competitors such as Vario, RZE and Zelos due to the excellent customer service present with those microbrands vs. Aliexpress brands such as San Martin or Pagani Design where customer service is an utter crapshoot.

I'm looking for a watch that has a face like a timex easyreader. The face is cream/offwhite and the body is silver.
I dont care what strap it has because I'll use my own leather nato.
Size ~38mm.
Waterproof enough to swim in a pool.

Much less Important:
Ideally it would be automatic or self charging quartz (I'm not sure on the terms).
I don't need any complications though date would be nice.
In a perfect world it would also be a stealth smart watch and track my sleep.
The glass backs some watches have are cool.

While I am looking to by something that will last forever I wouldn't spend more than a few hundred.

I've been using this cheap thing from aliexpress with a separate ali strap. I like the look but its loud and ran out of battery in no time.

Most of those chinese brands use Japanese movements, but the difference is that Japanese brands have very good QC (customer service may vary), and actually tune the movements before sending the watches.

Chinese brands are only worth it if you treat them like consumables, they're cheap, you don't have to service them (just swap the movement if you want to keep the watch), and they look good and have nice features (especially sapphire glass) for the price asked. They may or may not be accurate depending on how well the movement was tuned. 60-100€ is still pretty cheap, it's worth the risk IMO.

Real question here. Can someone sue Rolex for their sale tactics? Is there a case at all against their AD shenanigans?

>> No.17670102

>>17670096
No, because Rolex doesn't sell watches to customers. AUTHORIZED Dealers do whatever the fuck they want.
That's why it's stupid to blame Rolex for waiting lists. It's an AD thing and it can vary a lot from store to store.

Let's be real here, "investment" is the strongest excuse our own intrusive thoughts use against us.

perhaps fatter springbars would solve that, well or a thicker strap
the double pass I'm currently using seems to be in there pretty snug, doesn't move around on its own, but I have 0 problems pulling it through if I do so deliberatly
the strap is thin, but the springbars are fatter than what the chinks put in with the strap
on a related note, as long as the springbars are fully engaged with the lugholes, the fatness of the springbar shouldn't matter, right? I have 2-3 different fatness, same width springbars and not sure which I should use or if that doesn't matter that much

There's a big difference between giving clients what they want and simply giving them everything they ask for. As anyone with any engineering experience knows, the client rarely knows what they actually want.

With the Santos they actually did try it with all the faux screw heads lined-up, and even tried it with no screw heads at all. In both cases, it looked much worse.
The screw-less bracelet just looked like some bland, off-the-shelf part.
Because the screws in the watch head are functional, they don't line up. If the screw heads in the bracelet lined up, it would look like the watch and the bracelet don't belong together.

Lots of specs for the money
Most designs are knockoffs of more expensive watches
Quality ranges from surprisingly nice to shit
Check out pagani design, san martin, chronos, sugess, seastern
Look at YouTube videos to find out if a particular model has flaws and issues but remember that any YouTuber with affiliate links is a shill and they might gloss over problems.
I have a san martin rolex homage and its a really nice watch for the $200 i paid for it.

>what about the steeldive
they're decent (aka shit), I would say on par with the olevs. but again, don't pay full price, aliexpress or temu should have either the same or a clone for much cheaper than the msrp.

Iirc Citizen in general doesn't care about what gaijins think about their watches, this type of aesthetic is specifically targeted towards JP and SEA.

The design even reminds me of the weird looking divers that is the Orient Kamasu line.

everything about this design screams "we want to sell women's accessories to men". That's why they added the supposedly "masculine" screws - there's your purpose. I'd call it semiotic, rather than decorative. Anyways, enjoy your lady's watch.
