You're not wrong but the argument could be made that high end watches are halo products meant to sell the brand and trickle down to sales of lower end models. Like people buying a Calatrava from the company that makes really expensive and complicated watches. People also say it affects the image of the brand negatively, usually people who have invested in the brand (i.e. bought the cheapest watch and feel the company owes them). I personally don't agree but I asked to see where you were coming from. A similar thing happens with G-Shock (in a financially smaller scale). People the cheapest standard G-Shock at the mall or on amazon. That makes them feel entitled to every G-Shock Casio makes and get mad at every watch that is not black and/or costs over $50. Keep in mind that Casio releases a batch of new watches every month, every single month, without fail. So these people are getting mad at every month like clockwork. Like the AP situation this is a vocal minority, most people who buy a watch like it and don't expect anything from a company.

tldr: "I saved all my money for an entry level watch, now every watch the company makes, even if I can't afford it, needs my seal of approval!"

>How do they fare against the Patek's of the same vintage?
Pateks are better. For most of the 20th century, VC was just JLC with better finishing
>Against dress watches from Omega at the time, like the constellation, or Longines?
Different market segment. The early Omega Constellations were great watches, where Omega poured all their movement technologies.
>Were they highly regarded?
Back then, yes. Nowadays...sort of. It says "Vacheron" on the dial and it's made of gold, so it's not starting from zero, but you can also get those old dress watches for a couple grand. People who think that every watch the "Trinity" has ever made has been a museum-worthy piece will drool. However, you're not buying some rare, vintage model with any kind of paperwork detailing its provenance. You're just buying an old gold watch.

>> No.17645090

>>17645068
Vacheron Constantin was an établisseur until fairly recently, relatively speaking. The guy who said they were JLC with better finishing is mostly right. Really not comparable to Omega or Longines. You need to keep in mind that all watches from that era are varying degrees of dogshit compared to modern offerings and frankly unless they've sat in a deposit box or have been recently refurbished, they're almost certainly going to be significantly worse for wear.

If you don't know anything about vintage watches, and it sounds like you don't, I'd recommend you do a lot more research first before you get badly burned.

Word, thanks. Gotten lots of compliments in the couple months i've had it. Not surprisingly, women really seem to flip over it. The odd guy compliments it as well but generally with less enthusiasm.

I tend to wear too many cool pieces at once so people will generally only notice or compliment one thing. It's interesting, though, to see what different things people pick out that I maybe hadn't even considered.

Thank you for the insight. That's basically the gist of what I wanted to know. I've since been doing some reading into it.
I asked because I've always liked the look of pic related and was looking on chrono24 at VC's other stuff and realized that, overall, I kind of prefer their aesthetic to Patek's.
In this perusal I noticed that the vintage models were generally all much less costly compared with patek's from the same era and wanted to know why.
I'd always had it vaguely in my head that VC was somewhere up there near Patek but was always basically second, or now considering what you've said and what I've read, they were probably 3rd or 4th fiddle.

Apart from a certain calatrava style, I find that I much prefer VC's vintage stuff too. Considering the prices I was wondering if there was anything wrong with them, or what's NOT special about them. Some did have a vc archive except and service history and they did cost more, but still waaaay less than a calatrava. I still really like pic related.
I hope to be able to purchase something nice this year and want something gold and simple. Vintage or modern, I don't care.
And actually I have tried on this VC and it looks bigger than its 38mm. My wrist would probably suit a smaller looking watch ie. "vintage sizes".

I’d say it’s less that there is something wrong with Vacheron and more that you’re paying the Patek tax, even on vintage pieces. At my local Patek dealer you literally cannot get whatever the current hobnail entry level Calatrava is that costs ~$35k or so. Looking at it somewhat objectively, it’s probably a $20k watch or so (because it gets mogged by Breguet and Lange watches at that price, and they’re not much different from the VC patrimony/traditionelle), but they fly off the shelves anyway because of the name. Unfortunately this has bled into the vintage market as well.

I hate the shape of the stupid rotating disk and how it looks like a radiation symbol, looks too juvenile to me. On top of that the dial layout of the b400 looks too similar to the lay out of the ga2000 dialwhich I already have but somehow it's worse, I bet it also has similar a similar LCD which would make the negative display near illegible while the dot matrix negative display on the b300 is very legible even in low light. I also prefer gshocks with more buttons, the b400 has 2 less than the 300

It's not even that, they just really don't tend to give great options for colors. A number of their models only come in ONE color, so you either like the one color or you can get fucked. Or on models where they offer multiple color options they go for the weirdest, loudest, most clashing color combinations they can. These are the color options for their diver.
