Just got my first automatic luxury watch earlier today. Wore it to the barber shop right from the mall and already got a compliment. So nice with the sweeping hand. Solid construction and you can tell it's made with premium materials. Really excited to finally have one after using a quartz watch and apple watch for so many years.

There's something I've been wondering for a couple years now and maybe you have the expertise to answer - Why is it that black people so often stop in the middle of walkways, hallways, and doorways to chat with others and in doing so block the path of everyone else trying to get by? In the past everywhere I've gone to school or work with black people I found it's very common for a congregation to be standing directly in front of the entrances to rooms or right in the middle of a hallway so everyone else who needs to pass by has to squeeze by, and they never acknowledge this and move out of the way until they're through with the engagement. When I first noticed this phenomenon years ago in college I didn't even link it to race at all, just people being dumbasses, but relatively recently I noticed when this happens it's almost always involving one or more black people. Not even racist, I just thought it was an interesting(and very annoying) phenomenon.

For me water resistance is more about build quality than actual water resistance and being able to swim with a watch. I want to know my watch isn't going to brick just because I didn't take it off to wash my fucking hands. But also, shit happens, so even though I basically never go swimming it's nice to know that if I have a freak accident and fall in a flooded ditch or something my watch will be fine. That's the thing though. Most people have absolute shit taste and only like watches that are trendy. There are countless examples of retards buying a luxury watch and trying to sell it for almost nothing a few years later because it suddenly became out of style.

Pic related is a Reverso for the early 2000s. At that time JLC decided to "modernize" it, so they used the designs codes of the time : rounder shaped, sportsy vibe, etc. These are unsellable nowadays.

I don't think there's such a thing as a "timeless" design. There are only trends that last longer than others. For example the Rolex Datejust is considered time proof, but in a 100 years people will look at it like we look at old Breguet pocket watches nowadays.

But still, I indeed think buying a Santos is smarter/safer than buying pic related. That shit already looks dated to me.

Sure, but that's not really collecting. (And, admittedly, that stuff is actually really interesting.)

Just buying a bunch of watches so you can take pictures of them and attempt to impress others people is not a hobby. It's an expression of fundamental soullessness.

>>17631653
A lot of people got their expectations fucked up during the watch boom where you could buy a watch, enjoy it, and then sell it for what you paid (or even more). I don't understand why Seiko and Orient always drop production on their coolest fucking watches. Imagine if you could get one of these easily for under $400. According to the article setting it is a pain because the date setting position doesn't change the day so you have to fuck with the time to set the day, but if they just fixed that everyone would buy one of these in steel.

Imo the huge Panerai watches are already starting to look dated.

I also think the whole Genta-inspired integrated sports watch craze will come to an end. Yes, most of these watch-lines were originally released in the 70s, but there is a reason why most companies shelved them, or at least, why they became just a small segment in the watchmaker's lineup rather than the whole focus.

>>17632044
Should clarify that the 240 has been around since the 70s and they have used it as a base in many, many different watches because it’s an ultra-thin micro-rotor movement that is very robust. I just meant I’d expect the quality of finishing on a 240 Calatrava or Ellipse to be way way worse than a 240-base perpetual calendar or something similar. That might be an incorrect assumption though, not very many floating around and even fewer macro shots exist.

If anything this collage shows that Patek uses far less hand work on their "lesser" movements than they probably should. They use a hand held machine sure, but nothing like what say Lange does.
IIRC this was considered as indicative of their ramp up in production output without the necessary watchmakers to support it and the well documented subsequent decline in relative quality since they abandoned the Geneva Seal in favor of their own "the police investigated themselves and found that they'd done no wrong" kinda deal seal.
I wonder how VC and AP's "entry level" movements compare to Patek's current standard?

The thing is the Geneva seal people begged patek to stay, after all they helped found the damned thing.
They even significantly tightened up their standards to keep out a lot of the riffraff that patek used as a pretense to leave as a enticement.

I believe that pretense was for patek a legit concern, but considering the apparent relative decline in QC and in finishing as reported by long time collectors, not fad chasers who only know of of patek through the nautilus, seemingly immediately after they started their own seal and well, the timing's just all too convenient.
Get rid of the 3rd party that does the grading on the finishing of your work just in time for you to more than DOUBLE output?
Real convenient.
Rumor and disgruntled insider murmurings was that patek had to pull the apprentice watchmakers from their usual duties in the servicing department to go to work on the regular assembly line to make up for the lack of master watchmakers despite the push for higher output volume.

This explained the drop in quality and the horrendous wait times for servicing people were reporting a couple of years ago. I can't imagine covid lockdowns would've helped the backlog.

So if you want some older "entry level" calatrava or something and the choice is between the same model with the patek seal and one with the geneva seal, take the latter all other things being equal.

It's extraordinarily difficult if not impossible to predict what will be valuable in the future and what won't. I know old people who have valuable watches who see them as average, and vice versa. I really don't think the quartz movement matters at all in those watches. Nobody buys a Cartier for the movement, and the design remains timeless even if it uses a quartz movement, especially if it doesn't have a seconds-hand. In fact, even many of the expensive versions of the Tank (Tank Louis Cartier, Tank Francaise in all gold) use Quartz as well.

And while I agree that Vermeil is kind of iffy, I think you could argue that steel is more appropriate given the watch's origin.

This place is dead, therefore I'll ask a /wt/ question to you all that is perhaps more pertinent than it was before.

Now that Covid is over, and people have returned to their normal lives of traveling and eating out, do you think the watch market will return to pre-Covid times?

This doesn't just include Rolex OPs, Milgausses, and Subs trading for under MSRP, though that is part of it. Moreso to the perspective that watches would begin to diminish in their relative importance online as a commodity, a store for wealth, and a bragging right.

Do you like it? I mean, really? I've never seen the appeal. It has the classic OP/Datejust proportions of dial to case...but the rest of it seems haphazard. For the lightening second-hand, you need the sharp arrow hour markers of the original, which you don't get here. The green crystal, while unusual, is only interesting if you know it's the only model with a green sapphire crystal that is atrociously difficult to manufacture.

There's the everyman Cartier that will sell you a steel Santos with a trendy blue dial, while your girlfriend picks out the same Love bracelet and Trinity ring that everyone has.

Cartier was initially a high-end jeweler. They have a tradition of doing bespoke pieces for a very select clientele. They moved to mass market stuff much, much later. The idea that a normal person could own Cartier watches/jewelry is really only about 40 years old, starting with the original steel Santos.

Rolex was always intended to be a big company that sold the same watch to everyone (at or above a certain income level, of course). The idea of customization has never been a thing.

The main difference is just in the type of materials they use. Cartier uses the same movement in the entry level steel Santos as in the "two-tone with gold dial and diamond bezel" Santos. The same (quartz) movement in the steel Tank Must as in the all gold Tank Française (also quartz).
Yes, there is the Tank Cintrée and the Collection Privée stuff, but if you are looking for a Santos or a traditional Tank (Louis/Must), the difference is just in the materials.

Thanks. It’s a Louis Cartier Tank XL Slimline from ~2013. It has a Piaget 430 movement and the case is 5.1mm thick. The watch is too big and it’s extremely delicate, I’ve had to send it off for repairs 3 times outside of normal service intervals but I’d say that’s par for the course for an ultra thin movement. I have considered trading it in for a more modern LC but I’m some sort of retard who can’t get enough of ultra thin watches even though they’re a complete pain in the ass. Here it is compared to a Panerai Luminor (which is a shit watch btw)

Yes and I like the high end versions but not enough to spend $30k or whatever they’re asking these days on them. The basic ones don’t do much for me, the modern ones I’ve seen are 38mm by 6mm thick and the designs leave me feeling cold. I’m more interested in ultra thin micro-rotor movements but they’re mostly eye wateringly expensive.

Pic sort of related, JLC calls this an ultra thin watch but it isn’t. 9.9mm but auto with moon phase and sapphire case back, but some clever case construction makes it wear more like 8mm.

Yeah. The Master Ultra Thin line is not that thin. I guess they're thin by Omega or Breitling standards, but they're not that much thinner than their Polaris. He'll, the basic hand-winding Reverso is thinner and that still includes the case and carriage.
More impressive, though, is the complications they manage on their thin watches. An automatic perpetual calendar in a watch that's still just 9.2mm thick isn't bad.

As much as I love the Meteorite Dial, my gripe is the choice of color for the bottom half of the bezel. It's cum grey which I understand is a necessity in order to display the numbers in the same color as the hour markers but this leads to situations where it kinda hurts the readability between 16:00-18:00.

The Mako on the other hand is a GMT watch without minute markers. It probably wouldn't have looked as good had they added minute markers but that feels like a bad tradeoff for a watch with a GMT complication. It probably would've been fine on a dive watch complication.

That said, here's the real draw with the watch on the right.

I really don't know. You have to look at the watch as a whole. It's really easy for an automatic winding watch with a complication or two and sapphire case back to come in really thick, whereas I expect a dead simple two hander with printed indices and a solid caseback to be pretty damn slim.

Why are current mid-tier watches so NPC-tier? I hate to use this term but I really can't think of any other word. They look AI-generated. I went to the huge watch section of a departement store and all watches just look like copies of each other with minimal differences. Just the same classic designs you've seen for ages. I have to go way back into the past to find any interesting designs even if they might look outdated now.

I also don't get why you would ever buy some crappy quartz "fashion" watch over just using your smartphone or a smart watch. The only reason I see to get a oldschool watch is for the design and craftmanship but none of it is being offered in watches that cost <=1000€.

How come no industrial or graphic designer made a brand that makes good looking watches for a medium price? I am considering studying graphic and industrial design just to do it myself. Maybe I will also discover why no one tried to do this yet.

How do you tell west and east though? Seems kinda pointless to just know 2 directions. I suppose over a couple hours you could trace the sun movement in the sky for west-east
