The only 100+ year old company that doesn't do this is Rolex. Cartier, JLC, VC, AP, Omega, etc. have all made millions of different oddball designs.

The reason for this is that those companies started as watchmakers and Rolex started as a marketing company.

Take your basic model and give it a luminous dial. Call it an Explorer and market it for mountaineers. Give it a rotating bezel, call it the Submariner, and market it to divers. Give it an extra 24 hour hand and a different bezel, call it the GMT-Master and market it to pilots. Remove the rotating bezel, call it the Explorer II and market it to spelunkers, etc.

Never have a part that can't be used in multiple watches. The watch can be given a new name and the customer will simply believe that it's a new model.

>Well that's the smart thing to do.
Yes, it is. No doubt. Rolex's industrialization of the industry is their single greatest achievement. Before them, the watch industry was a bunch of products being made by hand by small teams, even individuals, all trying to make something unique for their customers.
Rolex took the opposite approach and relied on marketing to simply TELL the customer that their product is the best. That was all new shit.
Now, everything is made assembly-line style. Much better QC. Like, you said, more availability of parts. Greater ease of service.

As for being "instantly recognizable". Well, that's for basketball-Americans looking to flex so that part isn't interesting to me.

Not really. Unless you really, really want an automatic. Swapping batteries is easy and you can do it yourself. An automatic will be reasonably accurate, just check it against a reference time like your phone or PC once every few weeks and adjust it.

But you're not going to be getting the hand-finished artistry at that price point. Your automatic movement will have been made entirely by machine.

Topkek, he passed is what I am saying

At any case. I dont know shit about watches and made no prior research. Only thing I knew were the standart Wuartz and swiss made stuff. I also had an inkling that there are real watch makers and fashion watches.

So I went shopping from store to store and ended up really liking this fashion watch. By buddy who is really in to watches told me I could have gotten something better with real resale value, but I figure I can just push this watch to some immigrant or something.

At any case. How terrible do you find these fashion watches just from a design perspective?

I know fossil makes the EA watches so they are not good. But in this price range I really found this one to be most appealing.

I just love the grey matte steel combination with blue.

In a few months I will get a second Maurice Lacroix second hand that I will wear in comfort without the fear of losing it.

I'm wouldn't be so quick to say it's the Chronergy escapement (I doubt that's the case, anyway, since it's not a new escapement, it's just a name for an extremely slight tweak to the Swiss Lever escapement) but the 32XX series is definitely having some teething issues.
They tend to run at low amplitudes and get progressively slower. This seems to happen after about 10-12 months of constant use.

Watches come back from service and have to go back again within a few months, suggesting Rolex itself isn't sure what the problem is.

I've heard some suggestions that the recent production shortage had nothing to do with the pandemic, but more spending time trying to iron out the 32XX's problems.

It could be a lubrication issue, but I've read several watchmakers pointing out excess wear in areas where normally no lubrication is needed.

Something is definitely wrong with it and Rolex is being frustratingly cagey about it.

The fact that you point out that you give to charity is an attempt to justify your consoooming as harmless. It's harmless to other people, but it's hurting you. Your own greed notwithstanding, it's pretty obvious that you feel weighed down by your collection of crap that no one in your life cares about.

If you decided on a whim to liquidate your stuff. Keep one watch, one pen, etc. and give the rare books to libraries (so everyone can enjoy them) sell the rest and actually give the money to people who need food, shelter and clothes, you'd feel a lot better.

I fell for the super rep meme and I'm disappointed, maybe should've bought a VSF Submariner instead. It's a VSF Seamaster. Looks okay, dial well aligned, AR on the crystal is very good, but I just don't like it. Technically has a bunch of shit wrong:
>movement hand winds like shit making it difficult to screw down the crown
>rotor is louder than a $20 dollar Winner with a $5 movement
>bracelet is horrific, some links are stiffer than others, diver extension opens every time you try to put the watch on
>bezel more sloppy than the $20 Winner, good half a mm of play in every direction
>hands have visibly pooled paint at the bottom
>lume is shit and uneven on some markers

I will grease the rotor at some point and ultrasonic and baby oil the bracelet at some point then probably give it to a friend. Should've just bought a 35mm PRX.

I'm in patent law, mainly, and also work with military veterans.

An important thing you willfully fail to consider is the amount you give you charity matters less than the percentage of what you give away. The poor person who volunteers at the local church gives more away than you ever have or will. Elon Musk can give away a million dollars, but that means so little to him that he's basically given nothing.
You can call yourself a human rights lawyer, you can claim you give to charity, but the reality is that you're the one here coping; because if you live like you do, you're giving functionally nothing.

You can be greedy all you want, but don't try to claim that you're a saint at the same time.

But, then again, I also see that your responses have become angrier and angrier over the course of this thread, so you must have been drunk or something in that moment of vulnerability.

Obviously, the rep manufacturers sell fake boxes and, on the surface level, fakes of popular Rolex models have gotten very very good.
But if you got a chance to hold it, you'd be able to tell immediately. The movement would feel like shit, the bracelet links wouldn't be silky smooth. The movement is probably just a clone of an ETA 2836. That sort of shit.

So you have to go with inferential clues and make educated guesses.

It's weird how acclimation on watches works. Last year I went from a relatively huge 42mm watch to a 38mm watch and I kept looking at it for a long time like "man, is this watch too small for me?" Now I've been wearing a 36mm for a while and just today I started looking at it thinking "man, is this watch too big? I think I could go smaller than this." Is trying out a 34mm the next move? Maybe a thin rectangular watch? There were a couple rectangular and square watches I was kind of curious about but my wife said square watches look fucking gay and she refuses to be married to a fag.

That's not my wrist and not really the type of watch I would go for, just a picture from the internet of a 34mm watch. If I did it I would go for something more like a steel bracelet Datejust or Explorer or something.

It's kinda funny, I've been googling for pictures of decent wrist shots of men wearing 34mm watches and almost every single one is from some manner of mutant, and if they aren't a mutant their 34mm watch looks exactly like a 40mm or 42mm would look on me. >larping as a yuppie on a hate speech forum

A Rolex costs on average what, 10k? Meanwhile there’s chicks making 35k a year driving G Wagons on finance. Worry less about how other people see you and more about self actualisation because all owning a Rolex means is that you have access to a small amount of money

You’re not desititute, congratulations

This is a watch thread kid, the subject matter is watches
