Reposting bc I accidentally posted at the end of old thread:
Ordering a G-Shock gw5000u-1 tomorrow, I'm a carpenter and I scratched up my Seiko that was gifted to me at work so I'm getting this, I don't own any other watches and want one that will last me a long time, good purchase Anons?

>> No.17625218

>>17625214
The plastic will probably get scratched up even more. What part of the seiko got scratched? It's 5 bucks for a bezel, 10 bucks for a sapphire crystal. If it's the steel you're kind of fucked either way, but personally I don't care much about marks in steel, you're always going to get them over time.

Correct I wanna get a royal oak as well but I'm leaning towards a Hublot bc I think they're more stylish.

Get a Jacob&co Astronomia Tourbillon Casino, probably one of the best luxury watches you can get if you wanna splurge a bit and it's not as crazy gaudy as everyone claims, you can wear it casually desu as it's not very flashy and quite functional, the design is also quite stylish and timeless a lot like a Rolex.

>> No.17625236

>>17625222
I wore a plastic Casio for years, and while it didn't get fucked up too badly, they do get scuffed up. Personally, I find steel holds up better, it's harder to scratch and you don't usually get large gouges taken out of it if it does get scratched.

Pretty much every labourer or tradie I work with wears a gshock if they wear anything, they are pretty sturdy. I want a ga2100 for my next watch, currently I wear a Casio ae1200 to work and so far it's been pretty great.

>> No.17625249

>>17625239
Half of that is probably just because they're cheap.

Don't get me wrong, if I did manual labor all day I'd probably wear something similar, but I'd probably just go for a cheap Casio because they have better styling and I think the whole "g-shock" ethos was invalidated by quartz to begin with. Do you really need that much drop resistance? I'd rather have something with a more visible screen and a thinner that's less likely to get caught on shit to begin with.

>> No.17625258

>>17625249
Well i get that but we don't go to work to show off our fantastic taste in stylish watches, its just easier to check a watch than for the time. I used to wear cheap watches to work and they'd last about a month before I've smashed them up and need a replacement, so spending more on something that can withstand that is worth it for me anyway.

>> No.17625262 [DELETED]

>>17625249
Casio's are tough but I've legit seen G shocks get backed over by dump trucks and be pretty much fine, they're practically indestructible and the one anon suggested has a steel core, screw on caseback and solar, so it's marginally tougher than the standard squares and the battery will never run out if worn daily

I want to get a smartwatch. Main objective is fashion, but it would be good if it's water resistant.
I like hybrids like Garmin Vivomove Sport / HR and Fossil Collider HR, which are more than enough tech. But I also like Pixelwatch's design, and it's quick strap switching system allows for an ample variety of styles.

If you look at the wrist from the top and measure that, divide by 1.618 and you should get the diameter of the watch. Roughly.
A point to consider is that wrists and hands are 3D objects, and watches are as well, and how the watch looks on your wrists depends on many different factors, so there is no universal rule as to how big the watch should be. Try it out and see if it's comfy and if it looks good on you.

Disagree slightly, as there's definitely a desire to have a cheap-ass watch you can run through the mud and get greasy as shit and throw in a bucket of soapy water and keep going.

My first purchase in my dumb "vintage watch bargain collection" was a bit of a flop, it looks better than I expected but the dial and movement is loose inside the case, the day is misaligned, it feels rough as fuck and definitely needs a service. I'm not even convinced it's a real JLC. The band is se cheap replacement and the glass feels like plastic. You can all make fun of me now.

Do they though? This industry has by far the most trend/fad dick riding I've ever seen. The minute one new thing gets some buzz every single fucking company is doing it within weeks of each other - Tiffany blue, integrated bracelets, bronze cases, 2-tone rose gold, classic 36mm vintage models being released in ~40mm variants, etc... And it's not just because customers dig it because it doesn't take long before the watch news and reviewing community is saying enough is enough and it still persists.

Recently got a job as a park ranger and I'm looking for a watch to wear on the job. I wear the campaign hat type uniform, tan shirt, green pants. I also do maintenance work like mowing, weed eating, running a tractor, or cleaning bathrooms as needed.
Currently wearing an f91-w or Timex weekender, but I'm looking for something a little nicer, ideally under $150.

I've looked at the
-Casio dura
-a used Hamilton field watch
-a Citizen Avion eco-drive
and a few other field watches.

Im not too particular about quartz vs automatic, I would like it to have a date counter, and I like the crown to have guards. I don't like metal bands, and my wrist is ~6.75in.
Any recommendations? If you need more information let me know.

OK, yes, that's a completely different point (also, an accurate one.)
The Santos is very-well made, sure, and wonderfully styled, but it's a simple, steel three-hander with relatively simple case construction and finishing.
They can use all the economic conditions as an excuse all they like. Simply put, they realized they were under-charging for their watches and need to charge more if they want to be perceived as the exclusive brand they fancy themselves to be.

The used Rolex bubble is actually to blame for a lot of this, I think. Rolex realized what people were actually willing to pay for one of their watches, so they've become more aggressive in their annual price hikes.
Because Rolex is the industry benchmark, that, in turn, caused everyone else to raise their prices because "the Aqua Terra is always half the price of a Datejust".

Other companies use prestige pricing. "Our chrono costs the same as a Daytona, meaning it's just as good."

Looks very nice; nice and clean. No complaints about its look. Good thinnness, good water resistance. I don't know about the lume, but it's probably fine. I'm glad they're making masculine-presenting watches in small sizes.

It's about 1000 dollars, though.

The movement is so-so. (The low-beat ETA 2824 with the plastic escapement. It CAN be serviced, but probably only by Hamilton, since a lot of indies don't want to touch them.) Still has an open caseback, though. I would have preferred a solid caseback and made the watch even thinner.
The bracelet is also not great. Pin-and-collar links and no microadjust at all, just a half-link. (Microadjust matters more to wristlets since they have less fat for a clasp to sink into.)

If you can get it at a discount or used, then it's great. For the retail price, though, no, I think it's a shade overpriced.

Is there any reason to buy watches new anymore?
Even looking at the exact reference number, you can find that Santos model (WSSA0029) for below 6k$ while it retails above 7k. A Reverso small seconds retails for almost 9k$ while you can find it on the secondary market for around 7k.
And that difference only increases if you are willing to look at previous models or even vintage watches from decades ago. These aren't phones whose tech will be outdated; many even use the exact same movements they did 10-20 years ago. Many watches from the 50s and 60s still work perfectly fine, so a model from the 90s can last you a really long time if you take proper care of it.

Rolex at least has the justification that their watches trade on the grey market considerably above the retail price.
Too many brands out there who think they are Rolex...

It's not like with Omega or Rolex where you get the technology and testing, with a Santos you just get an average movement slapped into a reasonably finished albiet very unique-looking case design. There are even quality issues with the bracelet wobbling in the lugs over time, and clasp wobble as well.

Cartier is a very dishonest and overpriced brand imo.
There are basically two Cartier.
>the one that makes industrial watches like the regular Tank, Santos, Pasha, etc
>the one that makes handmade high horology precious metal pieces like the Tank Cintrée, Tank Normale, etc
The thing is, they use the prestige of the later to beef up the price of the former. This allows them to sell basic 3 hands steel watches with a quartz movement for 5 grand and nobody tells them to fuck off because "Cartier is so chic".

Not really. Especially since so many buyers now look at resale value when they buy, so they keep EVERYthing and constantly fret about the watch's condition.

10-15 years ago, it was common to throw out a watch's packaging. It's just a box, who gives a shit. (Keep the warranty card, of course.)
Now, when I bought my Cartier Santos a few years ago (and immediately flipped it because it was actually a pretty boring watch) the guy I bought it from had everything up to and including the big red shopping bag from the boutique.

It's been that way since the 1970s when Cartier re-incorporated after decades of being a group of semi-independent jewelers in Paris, London and New York. They needed to raise cash so they created the Santos de Cartier (the steel sports watch, not the gold Santos-Dumont) and the Must de Cartier line which was absolute barrel scraping dogshit.

But their top of the line stuff (both watches and haute joaillerie) has always been just beautiful.

It's taken them decades to undo the damage they did to themselves and they're not done yet, but what is also happening is that you have a group of buyers who grew up thinking Cartier is kind of affordable and getting pissy at being slapped in the face by luxury pricing.

Lots of brands do this. JLC and Patek and to a lesser degree Vacheron are all guilty of trading on pedigree from their haute horlogerie offerings while shilling some pretty shocking entry level models (quartz steel Reversos, Patek Twenty-4s and 6119s that get mogged by Lange and Breguet at half the price, Vacheron single handedly devaluing their entire brand with the misunderstood Fifty-Six). I don’t really think it’s a big issue though. It should be obvious that an entry-level mass produced model from a prestige brand has essentially nothing to do with a grand complication or minute repeater from the same brand that costs 10-50 times more.

In terms of upgrades:
- the G-Shock is fine
- the Seamaster...I don't love it, I'd actually go with something more like a Datejust for a daily watch. I'm not a fan of dive watches.
- the Reverso is great. Any upgrade would be into AP/VC/PP/ALS territory

>And all of this doesn't come down to the softening of market prices, it's price increases at retail that are making it that way.
It's both.

If thousands of people are willing to pay 5k over retail for a brand new Submariner, then Rolex knows the Submariner's MSRP is extremely low. It's not going to just raise the price 5k overnight, that would cause a market shock, but gradually increasing the prices slightly more aggressively than in years past means that they can eventually get their watch to where the market values it.
Then, five or ten years down the road when demand is comparatively low again, ADs can offer discounts again like the used to, while still selling the watch at a higher price.

This is what JLC and a ton of other companies do. Those MSRPs are not real. They offer huge discounts. Customers get enticed by 30% off and forget that 30% off this year's price is still 10% higher than last year's price. It's just sales tactics.

If your company is growing slower than others, it means you're becoming irrelevant.
