I want to buy a nice Japanese watch while I'm there, maybe around the $500-1000 range.

Since I had the idea of buying the Seagull for Chinese New Year and Walking the Mountain and so on I've thought better of it. But I'll still probably eventually get one just to have in in the rotation occasionally, because $300 for what is effectively a swiss mechanical chronograph is really fucking hard to beat for the value. Even if it breaks after a few years and you find it would be cheaper to buy a new one than to fix it, fuck it, buy a new one. Or don't. But you could buy 10 of these pieces of shit and still be under a fraction of the cost of a Daytona.

What's /wt/'s opinion on vintage dress watches from PP, VC, Omega, Longines etc., in smaller sizes like 33/32/34mm?
Some seem to "look larger" than the measurements, so a 33's not so visually off compared with a 35/36 on the wrist.

I have a chunk of change I want to spend flexing on poors and making Stacy think she can baby trap me so I’m looking for a nice watch.
One thing I want is the watch to be all black or at least a Matte finish. I don’t like non-metallic straps so no nato straps or anything like that please. I’m also not opposed to buying used.
>Your budget
Max $8k.
>Watch type, e.g. dress, diver, pilot
I’m not sure I care. As long as it’s on the larger size (so I think this means mostly pilot watches?) and meets my other requirements I’m good.

Automatic.
>Desired features, e.g. water resistance, day/date, 2nd time zone
Enough water resistance for casual swimming. I meet with people from other time zones so 1 (or more?) additional time zones would be nice.

Do you want the case itself to be black or just the dial? If just the dial you have a lot of options but the best for flexing would obviously be a Rolex, I would say Explorer II since it’s matte and not shiny/blingy as most other Rolexes. You can get them used for right around 8. If you want a black case look at those IWC Top Gun pilot’s watches in black ceramic. They’re cool looking imo.

I'm of two minds on the matter, such that it's both nice and legible and neat but also that compared with the older Brosnan bond types with the subtle wave, they're too bland.
However I think they're much better than the current wave which is cartoonishly exaggerated such that it's incredibly fugly. As I understand it the size of the newer model is also somehow off and the pic related has better proportions.
I have no idea how the co-axial calibre within this model is and whether or not it lies within the "cucked marketing gimmick" period of ETA's attempt of realizing Daniels' escapement in a mass produced movement. From my understanding later developments have been much better than the older ones. Might want to make sure you know what you're getting and what caveats there might be movement wise too.
But, just based on looks this version looks better than the current one but worse than the really old one. I liked the blue one so much after staring at it on someone's wrist; thought the sky was being reflected off it was such a nice deep blue, and almost bought one many times when traveling through airport duty-free's. I still keep a lookout for them on the used market and they're snatched up pretty quickly where I live whereas the cartoon-wave ones languish for months without any takers. Might just be a price thing though.
A possible detractor for the black one is that it could be accused of looking too much like a submariner. Whatever.

You'll probably figure this out on your on through reading, but black watches aren't as popular for a few reasons. Firstly the material they're made out of is either a coated steel or a solid ceramic.
The former will scratch one day, somehow, but it'll happen. Whether you care enough to baby that shit or will not cry when the black finish is marred by little silver lines as the base metal is exposed is up to your own temperament. The latter can crack or shatter with enough impact, but it's more scratch resistant compared with the coated watches.
Not all black coatings are the same, I have no idea about ceramic bodies.
The best black coatings are made by two German makers: Sinn and Damasko. Damasko wins out in this regard as far as durability of the coating goes, but it's still a coating at the end of the day and can possibly scratch without hope of a simple polish job like a steel, gold, platinum watch can have to remedy things.
However both Sinn and Damasko aren't for flexing. Only watchfags will know what they are. Black watches also aren't eyecatching enough for normalfags and whores, who as it has been shown time and time again notice glittery sparkly shit more than anything else.
Magpies.

I don't recommend black watches unless you look forward to the rugged mess some actual black soldier's watches end up looking like. It's a possibility. Maybe you'll be fine for the rest of your life without a scratch, it's not like it's just so fragile like it's painted on, but more likely not: a scrape here, a ding there, whether your fault or some other clutz; just be aware of what a marred black coating can look so you know what's possibly in store for you.

A) I prefer their money to be in the pockets of chinks rather than the kikes running Swatch (let's be honest, the best they can afford is a Hamilton, Mido or whatever)
B) the more fakes they buy, the less money they have to buy real Rolex, meaning more Rolex for me
C) It's always hilarious to meet someone (usually an Arab or a Paki) who obviously can't afford a luxury watch wearing one. Poorfags being poorfags, they'll always go for the most flashy, complicated, hard to fake watches. I love playing naive and ask them if it's a real one, and see them panicking as they realize I'm way wealthier than them.

Despite what internet memelords will have you believe, ceramic watches don't chip that often. I've personally witnessed them dropped onto a hard kitchen floor and be fine.
