To be honest, it was the finish; it's very....generic? It's tough to describe. Think of it this way; I'd seen it in pics for decades, and then finally in-hand the modern version was underwhelming to say the least. The size was fine...but I remember specifically the square sapphire crystal being very underwhelming in terms of clarity. Ultimately, the watch felt unrefined, and for the price tag, it wasn't worth it at all. But that's my personal experience...I'd say try it on before going for it.

>>17603001
Well, glad you got to enjoy another sojourn safely. At least you came back safely...shit is going down in Sudan and Congo. Acktually, shit is ALWAYS going down in congo....

If you're still here, I've been meaning to ask you: are you finished in terms of collecting? It's always nice to see your pieces here. I've been finished for months, so now occasionally I look but everything is a comforting variation-on-a-theme...nothing 'new' that I'd want to own. Have you reached the same zenith? (excuse the pun, as Zenith is fucking awesome if you know what to look for).

One of the mainplates of my Lemania 5100 is fully plastic, and no one gives a shit because it's a fucking lemania 5100. Plastic can be useful Anon, don't denegrate it. It's self-lubricating in the 1861, and that's why they use it. It's SUPERIOR.

Elizabeth Ruth Naomi Belville (5 March 1854 – 7 December 1943), also known as the Greenwich Time Lady, was a businesswoman from London. She, her mother Maria Elizabeth, and her father John Henry, sold people the time. Bros… I want to kms.
>be me, a mid-wit moron.
>leave the kids with grandparents and take my wife on on a day trip to a small coastal town she loves for her birthday
>strolling through the shitty mom and pop stores full of tacky memorabilia for that town.
>come across an antique store and look around a bit.
>see this vertical display case packed full of shitty mall jewelry
> in the back is a decrepit-looking watch with a yellow/green leather strap.
> it’s a fucking Vacheron Constantin with a giant crack in the face.
>it looks like it’s sat there for years
>holy shit babe look at this! It’s only $75!!
>run over to the owner of the store and interrupts me that they are closed and aren’t selling anything else.
>Tell her I’ll buy that off her right now but don’t have the cash on me. She refuses and tells us to leave.
>Fine but I’ll be back. At least it’s hard to see that it’s actually worth something.
>eventually make the time to get back out to that shit town after two weeks
>run into the store and the fucking watch is gone.
>ask the owner bitch if she remembers if she sold it and she gives me a stern, “nope” and “I don’t remember.”

I just left after that in complete shame. I can’t believe it.

IT'sss ahonestly about luck. Mom and paop stores are on the ir way out, so you want to drop by them before they go extinct. Then you have to sassume that they haven't done a generic gogogogogle search to know what their merch is worth; if they did, the prices will be too much ( I had ot hagggle down a moma dn potp store for my Waltham, which was probbaly worth about 2/3 of the price they were asking, byt they didn't know any better AND they claimed it was serviced but hte fuckehts han'dt done a dam thing...as my watchmaker said, 'fuckin apes have takin ths thing apart'. I love my watchmaker...bless him, but h'es old and I don't know what I"ll do without him).

ANyway, we're in a strange moment in history. We're between generations; the old dgeneration of mom and pop stores are about to extinguish, and the new AMAZON shit is going to dake over. So, if yous top off in a town iwht an antique store, you might find a deal...but if you stop off ina store that has acesss to the internet and someone under thes age of 30 who thinks it's a good idea to see what's on the moarket, you're screwded.

Full disclower; my 105.012 was bought aat a REALLY awesome price bcaweuse the owner 1) didn't know the value of the watch and 2) was heartbroken that his son didn't want it. I'm still sad about it actually, even hough I lucked out, but ist still stucks. Imatine that you buy a watch hat means something to you, and that you want to pass it onto the next generation, but then you finally get to that spoint asn they say, 'eh, can't bebothered.' FUCKING SHIT< if you ask me.

Maybe he could tell how I looked at it, or how I knew ever detail or revered the condition of it...sometimes you see sad things. I think the guy is a geneuinely awesome person, who has accomplished cool things I'll never do. He's poliette, kind, etc. a true dentlementman. But the MOdern market eats these people up for breakfast.

Sorry..ong answer. Short answer:

>tl:dr - fewer.

They're awesoseme. The most accurate movement tested bfeore the quartz crisis, and put into Zenith pocket watches, artisan pocket watches, wrist watch revivals by Zenith, and Ulisse Nardin ship's chronometers. You can still get them on Chrono24 if you search; look for the movement 5011k. They're reasonably affordable, but you have tos earch to get seomthing in good conditions. Aslos; Zneith has gone thw ay of shit regarding replacement parts; so if you have parts that arebroekn or need replacing, you have to have it serviced by them. INdependetsnc can't get parts.

I love mine...it's as accurate as my Citizeene 0100 over the coarse of a year, so accurate enough to be a chronometere in my book.

Pic related; the pokcet watch is diplay back and the balance wheel is almost as large or larger than the mainspring barrel. Proper chfonometer it is. I' wear it regularly when i'm doing 3-piece suits for part of the year, and it performs better than all of my qartuz shitters except the 0100. I'ts the kind of watch Holmes would have. (sherolock, not Eliazabteh.)

There isn't. The closest you'll get are people like uncle seiko who are willing to meet minimum order limits for popular watches from chink production companies. In terms of quality, they're okay, a bit better than the 20 dollar shit you can get direct from the chinks.

Basically every bracelet that isn't in-house came out of a simple catalog where you pick the parts you want and can get a logo embossed or whatever for your microshitter. There's nobody really doing bespoke work, I don't think I've ever seen a clasp like mine on another watch, titanium interior for weight and strength, SS exterior for looks and scratch resistance.

No, you get used to that instantly.

Interesting. I've been interested in the regular (non-duo) reverso's because I love their "vintage calatrava-esque" dials with the dauphine hands cept squarish, if that makes any sense. Neat, clean, sharp. Trying them on in a shop for a few mins doesn't give me enough time to know whether or not I'd hate the layout.
The chunky large ones really are too disproportionate. I really like that stark black/white recreation of the 1930's one though, and it has lume too.

Total watch newfag but any recs to something like these colour dot Seiko Spirits? I like that it looks simple but has a fashionable colour accent, has a very light and nice everyday wear type of atmosphere to it. Can't believe these sold for dirt cheap once upon a time.

Remember when they released this earlier this year?

The original one was 40mm.
Watches marketed for the amerifat market. Into the trash it goes.

The other squares are fairly self explanatory but what's the S with double bars on the top & bottom mean? Is the bottom square just showing that the bezel can rotate both ways? What about the one above the anti-magnetic symbol? That it can have the bracelet/strap changed?

Yea I dont really get the 24 hour dial either, it does pop the colour out but maybe would have worked better as a month dial or something more practical. I dont mind the lugs too much but they are kinda strange, its mostly the colour accent that I think is good, works well with the otherwise silver and minimalist design imo. Even if I wanted one they're rarely ever sold and I'm not hunting for it for months on end and paying 1500 for it when it retailed for 200. Would love to know if others have attempted something like this though. Think the red rising sun one looks nicer too.

Quite easy. All you need to do is:
Open the back
Find a way to pull out the stem (usually a little screw that you unscrew just enough to pull the stem, or a sort of button you push)
Drop the movement out of the case
Then, you need hand removing levers (don't forget to protect the dial with some paper/plastic) to simply lever the hands off the center axis.
You will have to remove all three. To get them back on, you'll need a hand fitting tool.
This may sound like a lot, but it's very simple.

Thanks, for me that would be an easy solution because I don't really care about seconds. Why should you remove all three hands though? It seems like the seconds one is on top

Correction. There is no more Daini and Suwa as such. Seiko Epson in Shiojiri makes quartz and spring drive and the other factory makes all the mechs.

Using levers?
Why would you do them one by one anyway if you want to take them all off?

>> No.17605002

>>17604994
Yeah, using levers. I did them one by one to avoid scratching the tops of the hands with the bottom of the next, it's not likely but it is possible. It's the whole point of using levers instead of those gimmicky grabber things that take them all off in one go.

Unless you're taking the hands off every other day, I can't imagine that would be a concern.

I asked this in the other watch thread, but I'll post it here too:

What's a good quality Swiss or Japanese watch for under $700USD ($1000 AUD).
My daily is a G-shock, and I own a Citizen Eco-drive I bought for a wedding last year.

I just turned 35 so I'd like something casual, neat, simple and beautiful.
Something I can wear with a my jeans and runners with the kids as well as out to dinner with the wife.

- I'd rather an automatic movement, but not against a quartz movement.
- Don't want a sports or chronograph watch, I'll never use it's functions.
- Something I can enjoy looking at every time I check the time.
- Quality and craftsmanship

I'd like an Omega or Rolex one day, but not today.

First thing you have to ask is what size you personally prefer to wear. A lot of good companies (Tissot, Seiko, Citizen Hamilton) make nice stuff at that price, and if you like vintage watches you can snag a lot of fantastic watches for under $700. King Seiko, some Omega's, vintage Citizen, Heuer, smaller Swiss brands are all good choices if you go vintage. Will the time keeping be perfect? Probably not unless you get it regulated and repaired by a professional. Otherwise you can also check out Chinese companies like San Martin and get a SW-200 for under $500.

I'd probably do a Hamilton field watch if I were you. If you're a patient man you could add yourself to the waitlist for a Halios, they're pretty good quality and retain or increase in value due to their "you can't have one" sales technique.
