Just bought this from a brown man in a foreign land. Any easy way to tell if it's fake? Wouldn't be upset either way really - I know nothing about watches and just thought it'd be a neat souvenir. Normally all I wear is an F91W for work.
The strap is shitty, he just threw it in for free (and I do still have the metal bracelet as well). Gonna buy a nicer NATO strap from one of the sellers linked in the sticky.

What's a good value digital negative display watch, preferably under $50.

I'm a poor college student looking for something practical and professional looking. I feel put together and competent when wearing a watch, and people tend to treat me more seriously. Mainly dress kind of crunchy / gorpy with lots of flannel, vests, and hiking boots. I would prefer a watch with like a thermometer and compass but all the models from Casio with those features are way out of my budget

I'd also consider a used watch if that's a better value. thanks

Is there any particular reason rubies are used as the jewels in movements rather than another type of stone like diamond or sapphire or something? Are rubies lower friction or something, or are they just cheaper?

Those AREN'T sapphires, they are synthetic stones made to look like natural rubies because the later were historically used for their high resistance to degradation and wearing, which was a big problem with turning staffs. After humanity discovered how to make syntethic ones, they kept the color and the (n jewels) in the movements, but there exist examples of other antique watchmakers using diamonds, blue sapphires, emeralds, etc...
In fact, that's the same reason gold chatons exist too, to allow a natural rubie to be fixed in the plate without having to remake the seat of the jewel for each time it was changed.

Rolex did not want their watches worn by a serial murderer so the costume design department found a watch that looked close enough.

In the end both will be great choice (pretty much the best 3 hands sports watches you can get), but I'll tell you this:
The most reasonable choice isn't always the best choice. Sometimes you have to listen to what your guts tell you. If you have a real soft spot for the OP, go for it or else you'll regret it.
