they have a world timer variant as well. these age of discovery watches are some of the very few relatively modern quartz watches that are almost entirely serviceable, and look fairly decent on the wrist to this day.

the prices in my opinion are reasonable for what you get but like i said, get them while you can because i can imagine hipster normie fags eventually finding out about it and buying all of them up.

First time posting here. I'm looking to buy a watch for my best friend's birthday and I have no idea about these.

I have a budget of 200-250€, maybe going up to 300€ if it's a big upgrade. I'm in a special position to get 20-30% off the sales price of Citizen and some weird brands but I hear Citizen is the best value. I'm a poorfag and can't get anything more expensive, sorry.

Pecrel is the Citizen Eco-Drive BM8550-81E. I like the watch face on this one. It's priced at 250€ without the discount and would fit into my budget. Any cookie cutter Citizens in this price range that I should be looking for? They all seem to be the same on paper except with a different watch face.

At 300€ the watches seem to start getting sapphire glass and titanium materials. Are they essential for watches?

not into panerai at all so I couldn't say for those. reps are only replicating their target model, no rep will be considerably or even nearly better than what it's just trying to be. need to keep in mind the conditions of where these reps are made compared to even mid-tier watch brands, finishing of movements is usually what is subpar to everything else as it's not the main focus - hence why good clone movements like the VS3235 are sought after more than others as with a good cleanup/service, they're decent even before modding if you want to go down that route.

>5 bar water resistance so you can walk in rain or wash your hands in peace

>40mm so it fits nearly all wrists unless your pal is an absolute skeletor
>13mm thick so it slips under a dress shirt cuff
Only downside to this model is that it has a mineral glass, which is objectively worse than sapphire glass in terms of scratch resistance. That being said, I've owned and worn multiple mineral glass watches for years without a single scratch on them.

Are there any really good replicas for under 100 dollars? The model and brand don't really matter, only interested in the accuracy compared to the original. Bonus points for a reputable brand though.

Anyone familiar with the watchfinder store and their business model?
I'm looking at a watch from the 90s that they claim to have faithfully restored, comparing it with other listings it looks to me like they added a see-through glass at the back to show the movement, is that actually something they could bother doing to their watches? Sounds too intrusive and time consuming, but all the other models I can find have solid backs so that's the only explanation.

Had an Eco-Drive beater a couple of years back, served me well. Charge lasts for literal months even if you keep it in a drawer and I like the idea that I get the quartz accuracy without the hassle of changing batteries.

However, for me, the biggest problem with Eco-Drives (and really any other quartz watch) at this price point is the misalignment in second hand, i.e., the hand does not hit the indicators/markers properly, but rather it hits somewhat in between the markers. It bothers the shit out of me, but I know people who couldn't care less. So if I were to buy an Eco-Drive watch, I'd make sure to first check for misalignment in person.

I remember when fakes were everywhere decades ago. The movements were shit, they looked fake to people who had the real thing, but to everyone else, they looked real. The function is the same today though: to appear to have the status required to own the real watch for the purposes of gaining any social benefit of that status without actually having anything.

I find bracelets are easier to clean, and definitely better in salt water. Yes, I dive, but haven't in many years (since before Covid). Leather straps, or any strap really, help display the watch head better, so if the case has an interesting shape or nice lugs, leather looks excellent. It's a waste on a Rolex case though.

>>17595038
Nice! How are they running? That Seiko diver looks really cool.

>>17595097
That's the intent of lots of fakes though; to replace as many fake parts with genuine parts without actually buying a genuine watch. If you had a gen. midcase, crystal, dial, handset, crown, and bracelet, could anyone tell that the watch was fake? For that alone, a 10k watch could be had for around 3k, and the only one who would know that it's fake is you and your watchmaker. It's a little sad though...

>>17595107
Wait for me!!!

>>17595203
High school philosophy question. The answer lies in how 'real' or 'genuine' is defined. With vintage watches, no one cares if movement parts are replaced due to wear and tear to keep the watch running...but god forbid you replace a crown or pushers.

You may be in the minority. The ultra rich only buy reps of genuine watches they already own so that they don't get robbed when they're targeted by gangs. They don't need to 'save' money the way that normal middle class people do. Sometimes they get scammed, of course (the infamous Cartier Crash debacle), but for the most part, they buy them for jewelry sake and sometimes horological hobby. Reps are awful in hand.

I really don't get how fake watches are a thing. You can get nice entry luxury watches for around 4-7k used which won't depreciate a lot or go up in value. The money you spend on fakes is more or less lost.
Also, a nice watch is something to gift to yourself because you enjoy the quality of the built... or the story/heritage of that model... or the working of the movement.
You shouldn't get watches to impress others but to impress yourself.

Anyone spending 4k on a watch is doing it to impress others.

There's nothing in the sub 40k category that's actually impressive, and anyone who says otherwise is trying to delude themselves. The movements aren't impressive, a 50 dollar casio will beat a 0100 over a couple of years. The "story" of a model is meaningless, because your speedy didn't go to the moon, it was made 30 years later. Heritage only matters if you're buying vintage, and it's something that's only talked about in the same sense as patina, coping for buying second hand abused watches. Build quality is low across the board on sub 40k watches, there's no hand painting, very little hand finishing, maybe the CNC robot puts in a bit more effort or you get a bit of hand polishing that will disappear after a couple of years of wear.

If you can't afford a real watch, you should just get a cheap one.

Im trying to make a 3d printed pendulum clock but have zero horology knowledge. Can someone tell me if this would work?
1. an escapement (deadbeat escapement), which is connected to the pendulum, which will also double as the second hand since im designing it in a way such that it rotates once a minute
2. at this point i add a third wheel and a second wheel (second wheel rotates with the pinion of the third wheel, the third wheel rotates with the pinion of the escape wheel) designed in such a way that the second wheel rotates once every 60 rotations of the escape wheel, so this wheel will have an arbor which will carry the minute hand
3. two more gears with a number of tooth such that there is another gear which completes a full rotation once every 12 rotations of the second wheel, which will serve as the hour hand
4. finally, this 12 hour rotation time gear will also double as the main gear/power source gear, because ill hang a weight from that. The weight will be attached with a string and the string will be coiled so that it unwinds once every 12 hours

No issues with the cocktail, I have a fitting millanaise that I might try on that one soon.
I like the first-gen monster for the teeth, it's a shame they went to a square design on the markers in later versions. The Minute handle was a bit loose but not hard to fix. I replaced the Bracelet with a SUPER Engineer Type II it has a pretty solid weight and feel to it now.

Likely bait, but I'm in a good mood.

1) 'Impressive' is contextual, so if you can't be impressed by realistic expectations, then you'll be unhappy with what is available in that price range.

2) A 50 dollar casio will not beat a 0100 over a couple of years. Don't you even HAQ? Also; even a mechanical can beat a 50$ casio; my Zenith 5011k is matching my 0100 in terms of accuracy over this past year (we're now in April..fuck, time flies fast). Granted, it's not a cheap pocket watch, but it's certainly not 40k and that's the point.

3) The movements can be impressive, within reason. Under 40k is available Lange, Patek, and AP, along with Roger Dubuis as well. Then you can also spend on some JLC (vintage 80s/90s can get you very high horology for that price), etc.

4) Agreed that the story of a model is meaningless, and that no Speedy available to the public has been on the moon. Mine, however, was actually made between 1965 and 1966, and is the same general reference (105.012) as the ones Buzz and Neil wore on Apollo 11, so suckit.
>pic related

5) Heritage only matters when buying vintage; I actually agree with this totally. I do disagree though that it's a cope; it actually helps to understand the context in terms of build quality, reliability, design of movements, and reliability in performance when comparing historical models. Further, it allows a buyer to find great deals on models from brands that today may not have cache but historically were among the top.

6) Build quality is not low across the board on sub 40k watches; it's like you've never done a Chrono24 search.

7) Define 'real' watch.

>>17596204
Why not get one of those wooden clock kits from UGEARS? I picked up the triple-axis tourbillon (with jumping hour) around Christmas...tonnes of fun to build, and though it still runs fast, it's fun to look at.
