There's nothing more fun than going to invicta forums where middle aged men post wrist shots of 55mm watches and earnestly replying something like
>nice watch, love the colors. cant wait to have this in my collection. why did you go with the womans size on this though?
it never fails. invicta owners are so fragile in their masculinity and they always have to be performative about it. you will get pages long rants on how they were in the marines and love hunting and all that shit. its never not hilarious

Great value for the money. I know this will make SEIKOcels seethe because they paid thousands on their shitters but the movement built into the Kamasu is way better than any 4R or 6R Seiko movement.

tl:dr: any caveats I should know about with buying a 90s' Calatrava?

I'm wearing a suit more often these days and want a dressier watch.
I'm currently wearing a 90's era Oris bigcrownpointer that's a steel case, blackdial and 36mm. Which is fine for my wrists and the black dial legibility is great.
However a 90's Patek Calatrava 3923R has come up. It's however 33/32mm. I think my 16.5 wrist can manage it.

As I understand it, this model uses the same calibre the recently discontinued 5196 used, cept better proportioned because patek cheaped out with the latter and stuffed the small movement into an enlarged case.
This reference doesn't get talked about so much online because nobody wants small watches anymore. Any of you terminally online forum trawlers hear anything about this model?
I've not been on the watch forums for years.

As a wristwatch they're kinda dumb; they're a sized-down cell phone with sensors to monitor you, there isn't craftsmanship or anything stylish; they're maximizing screen size and battery life and making an aluminum/stainless/titanium body. Thats just strapping a mini cell phone to your wrist. Nobody will inherit a smartwatch from grandad that wore it every day for 40 years.

my phone vibrates or makes a sound for notifications, so why do i need a smart watch?

and if i want to reply to the notifications, doing so on a watch is a nightmare. voice to text can be inaccurate or just annoying.

the biosensors provide feedback that for me is not very useful. if you really want useful data then every fit fag i know uses a dedicated sensor they strap to their chest.

the gps features are somewhat useful to me when i camp/sail, but again, a dedicated sensor/tool is always preferable.

yeah tech and "dressing nicely" rarely go together. If you're just wearing nicer clothes going out then nobody cares what watch you're wearing unless its just really out of place or style. You'd have to give more context; if you're going golfing nobody cares. Going to the bar to meet a few friends? Nobody cares. Full suit at a wedding or receiving an award? Probably not the best option for flexing a little style but nobody will say its out of place.

If you like tech and you're not going full /fa/ then it'll work most of the time.

Then it doesn't matter. Your track suit (lol) won't look right with a $2000 mechanical watch unless you're also flexing somewhere else like getting out of your Urus. You'll look a bit of a goober if you wear a smart watch and a regular watch but boomers and mall ninjas do that all the time.

Thanks for the advice.
I'll have to do that deep dive into learning about it then.
How it works where I live is that people like to use this series of affiliated watchmakers to authenticate forum classifieds purchases. Basically you and the seller agree to meet at one of these centers in the city, you pay the watchmaker to open the watch up and ensure it's all alright and then you can decide whether or not you want to go through with the purchase with the seller.
The seller in question's sold a lot on that forum, so if they were a outright scammer they'd have been outed already. So at least that's something.
Question is whether these centers can be trusted.
It's a few thousand cheaper than chrono24's range of average prices, but I chalk that to the user grade condition and the fact that no one wants this size anymore around here, not even for their mistresses.

Pay with a credit card or paypal for extra buyer protection, but aliexpress is pretty good at dealing with issues with their dispute resolution system.

There are elements that should always be speccmaxed, and anything else is just cope.

The case should be made of stainless, unless you're using something more expensive, like titanium or precious metals. You're not going to find anything else on anything but the cheapest kids watches anyway. No, ceramic is not acceptable for a watch. It's a cool material, but anything that fractures is not acceptable to make a watch out of, at least sapphire can be replaced. You can't fix a snapped off lug.

Sapphire crystal should be used always. It's cheap and plentiful. Maybe if you want a really thin watch you'd go with plastic, but big domes look like you're still stuck in the 60s so arguments about light reflection don't make sense. The only reason a company wouldn't go with sapphire is if they're trying to fuck you, or the crystal is something they don't want to pay to get made because it's a unique shape.

Bezel inserts, ceramic is the best and should always be chosen, unless the insert has to be extremely thin, in which case it's a breaking hazard. Ceramic is really hard to scratch, so it looks good for way longer and you don't have to worry about daily wear.

Caseback engravings are a gimmick, I don't care about them. Same with exhibition shit. Make the caseback as thin as you can as far as I'm concerned.

Bracelets should always be solid links at this point. They're cheap to produce and feel better. Same with end links. Milled clasps, I can take or leave. They're often heavier and offer no more strength over a pressed clasp, so I would consider these a gimmick to make the watch feel more "premium".

The difference is Casio offers great watches at a reasonable price point. Seiko sell $2000 watches with the shitty 6R movement which is insane. Their quality control issues have just been accepted as part of the charme. The 6R is an inconsistent mess.
How they get away with not regulating them in $2000 watches is beyond me.

Watches of any kind were still expensive and many men were still using pocket watches they bought at a jeweler. More money got you a better gold case instead of silver or even gunmetal. Really expenisive accurate movements (naval chronometers) weren't really accessible to even those that bought solid gold hunter cased pockets with say a repeater mechanism. Wristwatches wouldn't have shock resistant balances for another 20-25 years so they were finicky, fragile shits.
Watches were tools and if you had more money the case would be made out of a more valuable metal. Though more people wore watches then there are probably more people today that know and care, or claim to give a shit, about the movement than ever before.

You really think the technology to produce computer chips is as simple as the stuff to make sapphire? New chips require new design processes and new R&D work. Sapphire is just a rock. Maybe at one point it was harder to work with, but these days CNC manufacture makes it trivial.

Why is reality so short sighted and retarded? I guarantee if you asked almost anybody if they'd prefer to pay $12 more for the same watch with a sapphire crystal they'd agree without a second thought. Unironically that's a large part of the reason I buy Islanders instead for shitters. Paying the same price and actually getting the basic barebones features just feels like the correct thing to do.
>JUST INSTALL YOUR OWN SAPPHIRE! JUST REGULATE YOUR OWN WATCH! BE YOUR OWN FULL TIME WATCHMAKER!
No. I'm not fixing a company's shitty product out of the box for them. If I can't buy a watch and nut it on and wear it out immediately without fucking with it I'm not buying it. That's bullshit.

Let's say Seiko puts a sapphire on their normal Turtles/Samurai/Monster and charges $30 more.
Then their King Samurai/Turtle/Monster that's $200 more expensive has no right to exist anymore. Nobody would buy them simply for the ceramic bezel.
They need to have their tier system to sell more. Can't just put good specs on cheap watches.
If Seiko put better movements into their 6R line then they would fuck themselves over on their higher end lines.
It's always about protecting their own collections from cannibalizing other collections.

That's the point I'm making though - if I'm already not buying your mineral or acrylic shitter because I can get sapphire for the same price or less from a literal nobody brand, why on earth would I pay a premium to get your gitty watch in sapphire? Wouldn't it make a lot more sense to just make the price more competitive and treat customers in that price range right so that when they have the money for a high end watch they might actually consider your higher end watches instead of going to Tudor or Omega or Rolex or whoever? By the time Seiko customers get to that level they know what to expect from your shitty quality control and how frugal you are with the most basic materials and features. They're not going to pay good money for a Grand Seiko after you shat on them while they were coming up. That's exactly why Grand Seiko isn't as highly regarded as it could be for the history and progress Seiko has made with their technology.

Everyone who made watches got together and said "let's not put sapphire on anything under 200 bucks". Now retards like you think that sapphire is something "premium", when it's a rock that is only slightly harder to make than mineral glass. Wait till you find out about light bulbs.

Even this ad kinda shows the weird choices of watch manufacturers back then. Every watch but the platinum case one has seconds. You pay $100 or maybe over $200 for platinum and they don't even give you seconds. Yeah, the platinum one is thinner, but that still begs the question of why not offer a thicker platinum case watch with one of the movements with seconds? And why not offer the thinner no-seconds movement in cheaper cases with lower cost metals? Even back then there was apparently some kind of effort by the manufacturer to muscle customers into certain directions based on materials and features they wanted.

I do the same on every board I post in. I grab photos from the internet of stuff I have or that I'm talking about as references instead of posting pictures of my personal stuff. There are a number of reasons for that like not wanting to give away too much of my identity or what kind of shit I have, but the main reason is it's not worth the effort of taking the shit out and doing all the photography and making sure the pictures are good just to eventually post them for retards like you that pretend it's going to prove something when you and I both know you're going to continue to act like a fucktard over whatever triggered you anyway. Part of what you're buying when you buy jewelry is the seller. That's always going to be the case, the lower a seller goes on price the more corners they're cutting. The aliexpress watches might not even be new watches, they could be returns or watches assembled from parts or maybe not even genuine watches. China in particular has really bad consumer rights ethics where they consider it to be the responsibility of the buyer to vet the quality of a product before accepting it and paying for it, so as long as they ship you a heap of garbage vaguely resembling what you actually ordered they can't be held responsible for sending you garbage. And you don't think it's possible for a company to just put those pieces together at wholesale costs and sell a watch that costs 80 bucks and still makes money because the margins are still good enough? Nothing stops you from taking the back off the watch and looking at the movement.
