>> No.17571561

In theory i should like chypres because i love the notes they attempt, in concept, but i didn't really like any references out there:
Eau Sauvage, the citrus reference, smells like the synthetic lemon candies or something like an artificial bottled mineral lemonade rather than a real citrusy sparkling lime/lemon, no moss to be smelled. The flankers all smell different and nothing like their descriptions.
Pour Monsieur smelled stale and the moss seemed dry and overly bitter, nothing green aromatic ozonic out of it. Egoiste seemed better and Platinum cleaned the floor with both of them.
Mitsuoko is sold at a store 2000km away from me and the samplers cost the same as a bottle of something else so haven't tried it or anything by Guerlain for that matter. Shame because their quality and fame are well regarded by every side i have read or heard.
Also some frags from the charts have been discontinued, Mugler Cologne and Pure Havane for instance.

That's my point exactly. I typically get NYI itself for that much on a promo every year. I don't get why so many shitty Arab brands that used to go for $20-$30 charge $150+ for their clones. I've never had a single one that I would be really glad about purchasing after wearing it 5-10 times. I always just stop reaching out for them and they start gathering dust as you find out that even if the opening is somewhat similar (but typically much, much more syntehtic) then the fragrance is just shit after 1h of development.

>20s leather like cuir de russie and knize ten are pretty art deco too
Not as far as i know, those were considered risque and avant garde even for their day as women did not use leather as it was seen as old world/old-fashioned.
Supposedly the very best leather frags were from that era, like Spanish Leather, but in the old books they refer to them (because they were famous) as too rural and not city-like.
>androgyny of it
That's jewish 30's, late 10's and 20's metropolitan art deco days were still white in nature although with heavy orientalism influence, when oriental meant Japan and China stuff rather than pajeets. Also some native american trends but mostly with visual arts.

This along with inadequate quality control due to the boss there still being a novice kid, and also they got bought by jews and you can expect the worse from that ordeal especially when Olivier was already a very sketchy businessman.
Women frag scene also has very strong batch autism but mostly with Guerlain, Estee Lauder and YSL. That's when i learned i need to check vintage Opium.

>>17571999
Sounds more like a cope and you problem than arabs falling into their french semite cousins' tricks. And honestly people are retarded, if you prove you can deliver 90% of the quality for 10% of the price they will shun you but if you rise to 50% of the price they will start believing it is legit.

>don't force yourself to like them
It's just odd, i should love them but nothing i've tried smells like what it should be: Stong oakmoss base with another green in it to add a touch, subtle floral and woody heart and leafy citrus opening.
If anything i've tried some but without the oakmoss, being replaced either with vetiver or patchouli and the woods/florals take a position higher than the citruses which can only be found decently in sweet shit or freshies.
Perhaps IFRA really did kill the classic Chypre, that or half the chypres are classified as fougeres despite few having woods and/or dark greens to begin with to be classified as fuchairs.
>It happened to me with vetiver
I like vetiver but i discovered it recently, it feels foreign to what i wear but i can appreciate. I do not appreciate faggot houses replacing patchouli with it and pretend the formula is the same.

Finite and pretty expensive if sough on eBay or some other places.
My journey with this started when i had to search for something as high quality as before, honestly i don't think this general would be as successful if we could find stuff as good as vintage at retail.
Perfumery is in a sad state and i can't see it recovering aside from crazy rich arabs finally knowing how to make the aperture notes right and local niche houses, except the latter want to charge vintage/collector prices.

It would be very risky to sell widely with only a few units on their inventory, in my case Bvlgari Aqua flankers were discontinued time ago but i saw boxes of Atlantique and that brown one in stores for a while, last time they only had one bottle left tho.

Finally bought the very last bottle of Narciso Rodriguez For Him EDT in the entire region, it is now no more and no clone of it exist that i know of either.

Found it changes considerably after two months of being pumped air inside the bottle and shaken, comparing both tester bottles the musk became much brighter and the patchouli/violet combo blended better which smells more quality but loses some of that SUPPOSED petrichore notes which are merely a reminder more than an actual attempt at replicating it.

Perhaps someday a mainstream designer will attempt to actually replicate it but otherwise supposedly some australian niche house did manage to do it, Petrichore Plains i think was called. Now i need to buy Grey Flannel because in theory it should smell similar as they share many notes and allegedly have the same note effect, that is a damp violet with another dark green and musk. I believe Kurk and NR were inspired by it due to the note breakdown, the concept behind it ("tribute to the great fougeres of the late 70's/early 80's") and the colour itself, a grey box and bottle.

Cool Water macho buddies, just discovered this one, Al Haramain's "Amber Oud" Carbon from their oddly named line of "fancier" clones.
A supposed GIT clone BUT do the note changes sound familiar?

I'm gonna assume it's just supply being kept low, like with Dior Homme Parfum, which is once again available from the Dior website if you are in Europe. Same with ESP, which can also still be bought from their website.

>>17572984
You're overthinking it. An oakmoss base and citrus opening is in many fragrances and doesn't necessarily mean it will smell like a chypre. Lots of stuff can be inserted inbetween to make it smell different. It's better to go by that accord than by the fake notes the houses add onto their bottles. I usually get some hints from the "reminds me of" section of fragrantica/parfumo. If it has TdH and/or Encre Noire in it, I know it will be full of vetiveryl acetate, which is the smell I don't like. I like Eau Sauvage Parfum, which supposedly has "Haitian Vetiver" as heart note (same as Molecule 03 and Encre Noire, where it really is just vetiveryl acetate). Since I didn't find any frags I don't like in the "reminds me of" section, I tested it anyway. Turns out it has nothing to do with TdH/EN.

>>17573120
Sounds like you need a run to the store to sniff stuff.

>>17573134
It's currently on/off with that stuff here in Europe. Sometimes it's widely available, then it's gone, then it's only available on the Armani website (which now lists it as an Eau de Cologne).

>>17573349
Because that anon FOMO'd into a full bottle despite being unsure if he likes it. Now we need to tell him he will pull it off (he won't, since he's insecure about it already). Another victim of the frag industry who should have gone to the store first.

>>17573439
>what's the most Rastafarian fragrance?
Something like Patchouli Elixir, I'd say. Anything tobacco/weed/etc. is too obvious. A dirty patchouli sounds more rasta to me.

>> No.17573535

>>17573508
Ignore it. It used to be cheap, has now risen in price to ridiculous levels, has slightly dropped because nobody got FOMO'd into buying it yet and is waiting for another YTer to shill it. Al Haramain had a GIT clone before (L'Aventure Knight) and that wasn't it, so maybe they refined the formula and now try to mark it up heavily and release it under their Amber Oud line, which is well regarded (and has more than doubled in price since its gain in popularity). I had a price alert set for 60€/100 mL, and it was reached but then I decided not to buy it blind despite liking every frag it's associated with. I will no longer blindbuy arab clones at such prices. They either drop their prices again or they can fuck off. Reminder that I bought my first bottle of Detour Noir original formulation for 14€. It's also more than twice that now.

>> No.17573540

>>17573535
I can agree, the prices i see locally are ridiculous, but most of the low-level but consistent reviewers claim it's a very shitty GIT clone that just smells like Cool Water, that to me is the key of this whole puzzle.
GITfags always get gaslit to buy their niche shit but ignore vintage Cool Water cleaned the floor with their bottles that nobody knew before the Creed marketing machine happened around the late 90's.
>It used to be cheap
It was released not long ago, bet it was risen due to the Ruby/Baccarat and that Layton bottle got attention. Shame really, Tres Nuit seems to have been reformulated which boggles my mind, arabs reformulating something already quite synthetic after 3 years.
I just want Cool Water with performance, oakmoss, woods and perhaps a bit more green. I want my old bottles, buddy.

>> No.17573546

>>17573540
>arabs reformulating something
First thing that happened to Detour Noir after it gained popularity, by the way. I don't know if it was reformulated to follow the Layton reformulation, but they changed it. The box used to be silver/black, they changed it to full silver and with it came a reformulation. It used to smell the same as the Layton sample I got (and how Layton smelled at a store), and now it has more of a Boss Bottled vibe in the opening, way more apple and less spices. Arab houses aren't above reformulations.

Just the name should tell you enough. Here's the copypaste from their website:

“An invitation to discover, meet and share.” - Jean-Claude Ellena

A novel that feeds on the imagination, Voyage d’Hermès expresses the long-standing and unusual relationship between the house and travel. An interplay of paradoxes, complements and unexpected alliances support the premise of woody notes that are fresh yet musky, familiar yet surprising, hovering between impulsive and comforting, equally at ease with men as with women. Hermès designer Philippe Mouquet created a travel object bottle for Voyage d’Hermès, designed for journeys and symbolic of movement.

Speaking of vetiver, I think that Nicolai's Vetyver is heavily overlooked in this too crowded genre where it's really hard to innovate. It's fresh in a pleasant spicy way, giving it more depth (think about the coriander fresh punch in Tauer's LDDM) and one of the rare examples of florals (ylang-ylang, jasmine) that are without any doubt masculine. Goodies arrived

The 5ml decants are:

Ganymede
Tobacolor
Jazz club
Whispers in the library

The 1ml+- samples are:
Khamrah
Amethyst (by lataffa I'm guessing)
Optus vii (opus vii clone , no idea)
Ana abiyedh rouge (br540 clone)
Midnight oud
Raghba wood intense (no idea what is supposed to be cloning)
Mohra by lataffa (again no idea)
If anyone wants me to post my impressions of any of them, let me know. I'm not really interested in clones but I have tried most of the fragrances they are attempting to clone.

I just tried midnight oud and the opening is 95% interlude, just a tad sweeter and feels more humid, less dense and less potent, but that might even be a good thing.

Will see after a few hours but considering you can get midnight oud for 20 bucks , the performance or the dry down will have to be abysmal to justify a purchase of a full interlude bottle. And I love interlude and I have a decant both of the normal and the 53 versions.

Yeah, it's not the most optimal option price-wise, but I travel quite a lot, and it's handy for me to throw a 30ml or two into my luggage. Also, taking only 1 or 2 scents with you that you have to wear daily for a couple of weeks is great when you suffer from having too many fragrances to choose from. Last time I took only Patchouli Intense for a 2 weeks long business trip, and it was really illuminating. I've worn it quite a lot in the past, but by constant daily exposition I started picking up nuances and details I've never picked before (for example the incredibly cosy and warm vanilla drydown).

>>17575329
>Have you tried Jicky? If so how do they compare?
I have revisited Jicky recently on the Charles de Gaulle airport, and I was blown away. It is a blueprint for the entire genre of fragrances, sitting somewhere between fougere and chypre (with a softer ambery/vanillic touch to them) like Nicolai's NYI, Le Gallion Special for Gentlemen but also e.g. Bogue MEM to some extent. I can only imagine how opulent it had to smell for everyone when it was released. I am heavily considering getting a vintage bottle of Jicky to be fair. The only thing I'd change it is how quickly the vanillic Guerlainade accord is taking over the entire composition. However, I would say that Jicky is much closer to NYI than MEM. Imagine tweaking the lavender and civet in NYI to 10/10, and you'll get some approximation of what MEM is like.

Yeah, I am surprised how much of a revolution BI caused in this thread. I was indeed the first person who mentioned it here, and initialy just thought of it as an affordable, niche dumb-reach masculine crowd-pleaser. Kind of a fragrance that is a few steps above Sauvage/BdC and other heavily shilled crowd-pleasing designers that is more interesting at the same time. A fragrance that can be recommended to anyone coming here who just wants to smell nice and non-controversial and won't make you smell like every other dude in the club. But it seems that BI kind of started living a life of its own in this thread after I had posted about it a few times. I got kind of bored with it after a few months to be fair. These days, I only wear it for dates with gen-Z girls and won't be rebuying a new bottle afterwards as it doesn't fit my vibe entirely. I prefer more classic masculine fragrances, even if they don't bring me as many compliments as BI.

Budget? The best performing (and stunning) Neroli fragrance I know are either Bortnikoff's Neroli or Opalon from Bulgari's niche line. If you want something cheaper than you'll need to compromise parameters and for example go for JEP Neroli Intense as >>17575549 suggests. Let me take you on a journey, friend. You’re on vacation in San Francisco, you return to your hotel but have forgotten your room number. You walk into the room of another guest by mistake. Immediately upon entering, you notice that a bunch of sweaty men are fucking on a bed shaped like a giant martini glass covered with sequins. YMCA is playing on a loop on the room’s sound system, a disco ball hangs from the ceiling, a large TV displays episodes of RuPaul’s Drag Race. John Waters is sitting on a chair in the corner sipping a cosmopolitan.

Ultra Male is gayer than that room.

Thank you. It got posted a decent amount when I first took it. Just checked and I can't believe I took it two years ago. I went out and bought the ingredients to make the Cosmopolitan and was glad to finally do something useful with my bottle of Ultra Male (since sold).

MEM was horrible. I expected to like it, but I just didn't. It's a "challenging" fragrance for sure. Going through a full bottle is still a cause of concern for me.

I’ve only tried the original. I got suckered by hype and blind bought a full bottle. think they all share the lipstick accord, so they’re all probably pretty gay.

The Parfum is more masculine / less gay. Intense is good too but I prefer Parfum a bit

Are you talking Intense 2011 or 2007 version? Has somebody try Delicious Closet Queen Etat Libre d'Orange?

>> No.17575979

>>17575958
Try all three. Dior Homme Intense has won the "Best Men's Fragrance of all Time" category of the Fragrantica Reader Awards every year since their inception and is the highest rated male designer fragrance on parfumo. Better find out why yourself.
Also don't be like >>17575964, just go to a store and test them. DHI should be easy enough to find.

The 2011
It's a good frag. The Parfum tones down the iris, has less vanilla sweetness and adds a lot of leather + some rose and our. Feels like it has more sandalwood too, more of an evolving experience

It ain't DHI level, but it ain't bad. Certainly sweeter than DHI with a noticeable leather note, but it's not the leather note that's in DHP (more the one that is in 1 Million). The reviews greatly overstate the similarities between DHI and VUI, but noselets get one hit of the iris and then they can only think of one other frag. I prefer DHI, but I got a bottle of that stuff, too. Performance is great.
