/btg/ BOOT GENERAL - ROUGHOUT ENGIES EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4/renovateur
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them an

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.

Sorry mate I cannot help you.

The only thing I know about shoes is that if they are made with good materials and proper construction methods and by people who care the end result is good.
The easiest way to digest all of that into one thing is a brand. That's why people here only propose certain brands.

And it has nothing to do with price, I'd rather take a Grant Stone ($350) than a George Cleverley ($4,000).

This might be a really dumb question and I'm sorry about it, but can I store boots lying on their side instead of standing upright or will that ruin them long term?

The only real storage space for shoes in my shitty tiny city apartment is under the bed, which hasn't really been a problem so far since I only have shoes that fit under there easily. I use plastic shoe boxes with cotton bags so they are protected from dust and stuff as much as possible while they are stored there.
I don't really want to spend money on a good pair of boots only for them to be entirely deformed whenever I get them out of storage from under the bed from lying on their side for 6+ months during the hot summer months.

i have been wearing mine for the past 2 days. there are some oddities about them but they feel very sturdy. if you are any larger than a regular d width please get ee, it will make a difference. the heel area is quite large, until they are broken in i can tell i will need to put bandages back there to avoid blisters. the toe box is also not anatomical, if your big toe goes straight or bends outward, you might have some rubbing. the tongue is very thick leather, it will take time to break in. i also wish the sides of the tongue were larger, i have noticed that if i bend down it will shift away and let the speedhooks dig into my ankle. i can't judge them fairly until they start really breaking in, but this is my initial impression wearing them.

other than feeling, the construction seems good. all the stitching is neat and nothing is off or crooked.

They cost almost 700 dollars now. A few years ago they were 500 and before that even less. They are way overpriced, that is for sure. But then again, all good boots are overpriced as fuck now.
That being said, they are extremely comfy. Of all my boots they are definitely the best feeling and fitting.
QC is hit or miss but I think it depends which retailer you get them from. I got mine from The Shoe Mart. When I first bought my Indys the pair I got was so bad looking that I opened the box, took one look and laughed out loud before putting them in the box and emailing for an exchange. I can't even describe how bad that shit was. My replacement pair was fine mostly but still had missed and sloppy stitches around the shaft where the lining is sewn in. And then there's the ridiculously skinny, non-gusseted tongue that slides to the side constantly. It's awful and I have no idea why Alden never fixed it after all these years
At the end of the day they are extremely overpriced, the materials aren't great (non-leather midsole on a boot that price is insulting, CXL is prone to really ugly creasing), the QC is very hit or miss with some boots getting sent out that never should have left the factory. But despite it all, they're extremely comfortable, they look great and no copycat brand has ever been able to pull off a successful clone, they look cool as shit and there's loads of leather/sole options to choose
it's a 400-500 dollar shoe being sold for nearly 700. it's up to you to decide if that's a deal breaker or not. I absolutely love my Indys and will definitely be getting the midsole upgraded if/when i do a resole, and will either have a gusseted tongue put in or the tongue stitched in place. they're good boots, but the price is a joke for what you get and the QC you risk getting
from what i have heard if you order for alden of madison or alden of carmel they are better about QC than the shoe mart which doesn't care, but has great CS though

I found a great pair of low boots made by aldo about a year ago in a thrift store. They're really great replacements for dress shoes (which I have never liked the look or feel of) at mildly-dressy occasions but are a little on the beater side. I'll probably get them looking nicer with some oil and polish, but they were not in the greatest structural shape when I got them and I doubt fast-fashion boots are properly cobbler-able.

Where can I get some nice-quality boots that are as close to these as possible?

Big points to hit are cap toe (non-negotiable), relatively narrow/slim at the ankles (a lot of boots, especially in my size 12, get stupidly wide at the ankle; I like the look of these), similar height/proportion, and similar sole (thin, not a lot of overlap, don't quite know how to describe it). Preferred budget around $300, but I'm flexible since these will basically be my go-to "nice shoes".

parkhurst is an option. I'd want to see how they look on the ankle to see if they're too wide, though, and strangely the cap-toe option (Allen) doesn't seem to come in black; the dark burgundy is kind of intriguing.

I'm fine with full dress boots, as long as they're not suede or something else I'd have to really baby/be afraid to walk around in. I'll probably keep the boots I have now for beater-dressy and use the new ones for dressy-dressy

Thinking about getting a high end chukka but since this is the first pair of footwear I'll ever pay more than like 80USD for i want to get the sizing right. Should I just go full retard and order 3 pairs and then try them all on and then return two of the pairs? Is this haram? Will the e-store try and fuck me and then I'm left with 3 pairs and an empty bank account? Should be no problems whatsoever if I just gently try them on inside, r-right?

Yeah I've measured my feet in one of those high-tech fancy digital feet measuring devices that some stores have. So I have a pretty good idea of length and width etc. But I also know you're supposed to go down like a size from your sneaker size, I wear 43 in sneakers. But that doesn't really add up to what the bootmaker recommends. They say people with my foot length should take UK9/43 in their boots which is the same size as my sneaker sizes. Some anon said I should size down from their recommendation though since the boots are usually built for being able to wear really thick socks.

I am an 11.5D brannock and have a pair of mister Lou’s in 11E which fit pretty well. I cannot speak for the boss boot, but the toe on the mister Lou is pretty narrow and I would suggest sizing up in width. It was also a long break in period and I went through a few times of getting blisters on my heels. The insole is now broken in and when I strap the buckles all the way, I don’t have any more heel slip and the boots are pretty comfortable. I don’t know if I could have done the sizing any better than this, but at the end of the day engineer boots are pretty difficult to size correctly and the particular last you’re interested in may not be the right one for your feet. For example, a lot of people say that the John Lofgren engineers have a very difficult pass through, especially people with even a slightly above average instep height. As far as I know, my instep is pretty normal and when I followed the sizing guide for the Lofgren engineers, I never had an issue getting my feet into them. Tbh I feel like I could have even gone a size down since the toe width is arguably closer to an E instead of a D
