That's cute, I have zero respect for either of them. They both missed the entire point of watches, and have turned them into a cancerous business practice based on selling their own brand of autism.

You know who the best watchmaker is in the world? You've never heard of him, and I've never heard of him. He's a man who makes watches for himself, and the watches he wears are all made by him. The failures, the test runs, they're all ground up for scrap. That's what watchmaking is, when you take it to the ideal.

When you convert that into a hand finishing business, you're just a prostitute. There's nothing impressive about a Dufour, or a Smith. Because the people who own them are just rich retards who want a fun story to tell at the dining table, about how they bought a month of an "artisan's" life for a hundred grand.

"Modern" advances in watchmaking have obsoleted the man in his garage spending weeks on a movement when a machine can pump out better quality in 20 seconds. These men have instead tried to make a living off selling a very inefficient process by sticking their name on it, but all they've really done is invalidated their own work. The old masters at least had the excuse that their patrons were kings, not your waste of oxygen modern millionaire.

If you want to celebrate watchmakers, the guy who spends a few hours doing some CAD work for a paycheck and makes a watch case that winds up selling 100k units is far more deserving of praise. Or the guy watching the machine that churns out 50 gears a second. Those guys have got more claim to fame than these faggots, but you'll never read about them in an article for obvious reasons, there's no money to be made in promoting them.

These "handmade" watches appeal to a very specific clientele, and it's the last kind of person you'd want owning something you worked hard on. That's why it's prostitution.

How is that even slightly acceptable? I guess they at least have half links, but those are bigger than a microadjust. Even my crappiest seiko has three microadjusts.

Look at that disgusting gap between the end of the clasp and the bracelet, too. I have 40 year old seikos with perfect evenness here because they clasp over the tri-fold.

That finishing is atrocious, I assume they're at least solid lugs, why didn't they machine them properly? Were they scared of retards scratching the finish taking them off?

what watch should I buy if I want it to still have easily buyable parts in 80 years?
I want to gift it to my brother. He's a buy it for life kind of guy. He still uses stuff my granpa used to use like knifes and leather boots. He takes great care of his stuff.

He doesn't care what kind of watch, just that it will be his companion until the day he dies.

Should I look for brands or rather movements?

Buy it for life is a meme. In 80 years, there will be a replacement drop-in movement with twice the power reserve and 10x the accuracy available for 20 bucks. An ETA is the last thing you want, because a 2824 is like 200 bucks. An NH35 will cost you 30 bucks today, and the replacement movement for it in 80 years will cost you 30 bucks still. Every decade you can junk it and fit a new one, and you'll still save money over buying a 2824 even if you service it for life for free, which isn't going to happen, those fancy oils go bad eventually and they're expensive to buy if you just need a ml.

I'm thinking it's probably an issue with fit. Adjusting one end of the clasp means the folding portion moves, which means you need a less precise clasp that doesn't feel as good. So they made all the adjustment in the bracelet instead and gave you half-links to get roughly the same level of sizes.

Personally I can't see the point in ever having more than 4 microadjust points anyway, but you should still have them. They're better than half-links, although sometimes the spacing is fucking retarded. The closer together, the better, you only need to have microadjust points longer than 1.5 links. I don't know why some clasps have 8 of the fucking things across a solid 4cm of clasp. Give me 8 over 2cm, you retards.

>> No.17565813

>but you should still have them.
Why though? If they adjust by the links only whats the point of micro-adjusting when there are half-links? I remember adjusting my Seiko by removing 1 link and thinking it was way too loose before removing that link so I moved the micro adjust from hole 1 to 3. Way too tight. Moved it back to 2 then thought I needed to remove a link from the other side and add it to the other but got it all figured out. Why not just remove 2 half-links from either side and be done with it?

If your bracelet lines up easily, you got lucky. I've had plenty of bracelets where you're halfway between a micro-adjust, and you'd be miles out with just half-links.

That's not give, if you hold them up gravity will pull that distance, it's just the space around the link bars so they don't seize.

Hate to say it mate but >>17566447 is right - you have to go into buying vintage rolex knowing that it will need servicing very frequently.

If you're just buying a cheap, vintage airking just for the Rolex brand for £4000, you'll spend the difference between that and a modern OP36 in 5-10 years on services easily, as well as the annoyance and unease of it breaking every few years.

You might as well save up for a modern OP or DJ instead of being tight now; vintage Rolex is a very different experience, of which people generally desire when buying them, you aren't one of those people, you just want a Rolex.

From people wearing a Rolex for 20-30 years without servicing it and being like, "It still works."

My dad wore his Datejust for about 25 years, daily, and never serviced it. He insisted it still worked. It was losing about a minute per day.
>Works fine, just reset it every Sunday, no problem.

I finally snatched it off his wrist and gave it to Rolex to service. It ended up needing about 2500 dollars' worth of service. The fucking caseback needed to be replaced, since it had become so corroded.
