I fucking hate the rat Jew company that is Seiko.
Their shitty pin and collar system has so many design flaws.
Apparently if either the pin or the tube is even slightly crooked the whole thing doesn't work anymore and keeps falling out.

Called Seiko to ship me a few of them and said I would pay shipping costs. They told me they could ship a collar and pin system for $5,95 each plus shipping. Politely told her to go fuck herself.

Tried finding those pins and collars from third party sellers and they charge the same prices.

Those crappy little sleeves form part of the pin mechanism. Without them, there's just a massive gap the pin can't fill. And if you use a split pin, there's nothing acting on the sleeve because of the way they apply friction. At best, you're going to end up with really loose links that scratch each other with way too much play.

The strap bulges out due to atrocious design for muh ultimate drop resistance, the plastic junk makes the watch practically 14mm thick, and on most models you can barely see the screen because of the retarded decision to put an air barrier between the LCD and the front glass, making it reflection city.

Oh no, you're a fucking retard. All squares are the same size, technically my 5600 is 0.1mm thinner than the 5000, but that doesn't really mean anything. Material? Doesn't matter, makes no impact on how the watch performs. Led? I never mentioned the light, I didn't have any problems with it anyway. Screen? I don't know if the new 5000 uses the newer shit they were rolling out on the bluetooth models or not, but it doesn't make a difference to most of my complaints anyway, which are primarily about the size of the watch. Speedmaster anons, I’ve been thinking about buying a 3rd Speedmaster. A cal.861 / 1969 would be ideal. A cal.321 would be amazing but maybe after I get more more down the rabbit hole.

Any tips?

also, Costco prices are almost always MSRP at most. i bought my most recent car through Costcos auto program and it was based. you basically get a price quote directly from them and when you go to the dealer they will not upsell you in any way and match what Costco agreed to.

From your pic, it looks like you have the 3861 Sapphire and a 1861 (3570.50?). If my assumptions are correct, I'd ask the following:

1) Why would an 861/1969 be ideal if you already have an 1861? Are you thinking more about the vintage aspect of having a 145.022, with tritium dial, maybe a different caseback, etc.? Or are you looking for an actual transition 861 with the older style dial with the long indices and applied Omega logo?

2) If you want the vintage styling, then an old 145.022 would be great, as it's the least expensive option to get the look. But if you go that route, why not just bite the bullet and save up for a cal. 321 (145.012 or 105.012); these are the most affordable ones available and the most numerous. That way you win.

3) No matter what you do, if you go vintage, you should find a watchmaker that you trust ASAP. Buying watches that old usually means that they need to be serviced as soon as you get them. Part of my own process is not to trust any seller saying the watch has been 'recently serviced'. Too many times I've taken watches with that description to my watchmaker and he'd gently educate me on precisely why the last watchmaker to touch the movement was a gorilla. So, assume the watch needs servicing, and if you need parts, unless your watchmaker has an Omega parts account, the parts for the older 321 may be difficult to come by.

4) Biggest tip I can give you: check out Speedmaster101's website (by the same name), also his channel on youtube (I think it's called WilliamSpeedmaster101). It'll give you serious info about cal 321s and the early transitional Speedies.

5) You could also just go with other choices like Anons here have suggested. Triple dates are fun, Mark II, Mark III, Mark IV, and Mark 4.5s are great too. You could try the larger ones (44mm), the smaller ones (reduced, Schumacher, etc.), or even the modern co-axials which are fantastic (grey side of the moon, etc.). What do you think?

This was the post I was hoping for, thanks. It’s the vintage look I want and somewhat the collectability. The fact they were the less expensive was and added bonus and it hedged my rise a bit.

I’d love a 321 with an extract and maybe that is the best way to go and in years to come I know I will be happy with that choice. I will put 145.012 or 105.012 into my daily watch hunts.

I don’t have any watch makers in my local area I would trust with a vintage Speedmaster or anything of value. The only one I know and would try does not have a parts account.

Speedmaster101 YouTube was what started this idea of a vintage Speedmaster, I have watched everything, the info was excellent.

I’m leaning towards maybe the broad arrow or FOIS, I always liked the MKll’s and really love the dark side of the moons apollo 8 (would buy) but worry I’d chip the case as unlikely as that is to happen but I know Omega replacement price for a case is close to the price of the watch. I’ll learn more about 321 and 861 refs and not jump in and make mistakes but if the right one came along I could pull the trigger on it even after buying a few other speedys first, if that was not the case I’d go straight for the cal.321, thank you for the excellent reply and clarity.

Best of luck with the search. I love speedies too.

I've had experience with the ceramic cases for the Speedies; yes, they can shatter, but you really do need to do something catastrophic (i.e. drop it two floors down onto concrete or tile). In normal wear and tear, you'll be fine, and if you're normally careful with watches, then they'll last as well as any other.

Buying a 321 without an extract isn't an automatic no-go; if you trust the seller and the pics of the movement, case, bezel, handset, and dial align with what you should see according to the model, then an extract isn't really necessary before purchase. I'm very happy with my 321, but I did purchase it without the benefit of an extract (I got that after). If you want a Speedy that is 'real' for the Space Race, then don't settle. Buy the best one you can at the price you are comfortable with, and don't look back. Beware though; there are counterfeit bezels floating around, and real ones in good condition are getting rarer to find. Last thought about the 321s - the performance tolerances are much wider than the 861s; even if a trusty watchmaker adjusts the rate to perform accurately under 'daily life' circumstances, you will see it perform far worse when it's under 24 hours power reserve. There's a reason the Apollo astronauts had a scheduled 'watch-winding' in their daily routine.

MKIIs are lots of fun if you want a different case shape for your collection, and they're far cheaper (or at least, used to be) than any Speedy Pro.

Finally; I'm not convinced you'll make a mistake if you're being careful from the onset. The trick is having the disposable income 'ready' for when the vintage watch appears. Timing is everything.

Hope that helps, and share it when it arrives.

Woah that's a lot of questions.

I was a bartender and briefly a labourer for about 18 months of just trying to survive after getting kicked out, then had a proper think about what I was good at in high-school: maths. Then applied for engineering-related apprenticeships, ended up in (I don't want to say exactly which field) let's call it public infrastructure design engineering.

In the UK there are is a well-organized apprenticeships structure which encourages employers to have a set number of intakes every year.

I feel sorry for you. Those self limiting believes are going to lead to a life of misery and sorrow.

If you want actual advice and arent just interested in a sorror party the go work in a trade.
I wouldnt recommend brick laying or anything like that. You seem like the kind of person that is sensitive and I dont mean that as a bad thing. I used to work as a carpenter and the way trade people talk to each other wasnt my thing.
I then went to an electrician and worked for him.
Electricians are mostly smarter than your average brick layer or carpenter.

If your boss is shitty find another one.
After a year or two you will be skilled enough to apply for industry work.

You could try to share an appartment with college students to save costs on living.
In that time you can go to a community college part time to get a degree that will help you get a better industry job.

Also it doesnt matter if you already have the necessary skills for a trade job. We had an apprentice who literally didn't know how to hold a hammer. He was such a major fuck up but we managed to turn him into a good electrician.
Even disabilites arent an excuse unless youre in a wheelchair. Just take it slow and steady.

I did all that, saved up and went to college. Now I work in healthcare.

If you have more questions I will answer them tomorrow. Do what you want with that information.

My fiance bought this watch the other day, I don't know how I feel about it. It's one of those analog electronic deals where you use the crown to give it commants and the hands electronically fly all over the goddamn place, in this case the second hand becomes an indicator for the time zone so you can scan through every time zone to see what time it is in the city indicated. Price and shock resistance. Some even use the same module but protreks are cheaper because they don't have to add any of the shock resistance features. That doesn't matter for normal use, protreks are very durable for anything you throw at them.

But they are. They are literally trying to sell you something, whether it's rolexes or their cope. So next time someone starts I expect you to tell them to knock off the shilling and fuck off. Commit to that same energy.

Microbrands are for absolute faggots. Want sapphire? It's 5 bucks from China. Want AR coated? It's 25 bucks. Takes about 5 minutes to swap out a crystal.

At least buy the chink produced watches directly from the chinks for half the price. Chinks make some good stuff these days, you can buy the cases or the watches and swap in whatever you want.

I'm not fixing a company's product for them. Why the fuck should anyone knowingly buy an inferior product expecting to fix it themselves? What the fuck kind of bullshit cope is this?

Yeah it's cool, it's super retro and it's the watch from Alien. I think it's cooler than the calculator watch.
It's 70 bucks though which is ridiculous because functionally it does as much as the f91.

Then buy the chink watch that comes with sapphire as standard, instead of buying the same watch with "islander" printed on the dial for 2-4x the price.

Personally I don't buy anything inferior. Which is why I make my own watches.
