That's junk. The Must de Cartier line was made to be a mass appeal line. That's why it doesn't have the classic all-caps "CARTIER" on the dial. This was around the time that Armani was successfully creating sales the lower end Emporio Armani and Armani Exchange lines

Those watches were vermeil, meaning silver with gold plating. Most Cartier fans don't take them seriously and look at that whole era as a pretty low point for the company.

They were asking around $800 CAD for it and I thought it was ridiculous. I've also heard some negative things about the powermatic movement being unreliable and using shitty plastic parts.

If you love how it looks and determined to own one I would recommend the quartz version. It's half the price.

- It is expensive to buy and service
- The movement is primitive for what it costs
- No lume, no date, hand-winding, etc
- It's seen as a dainty dress watch
- If you're not buying a complicated JLC, you're just buying the name
- Rectangular watches may be uncomfortable for some wearers

There's 6 reasons, but if you can live with the first 5, the 6th is the only one that would give me pause. I've owned a couple Tanks and Reversos and I've decided I just don't like the way they sit on my wrist.

When I googled it the google highlights seem to think that military people do it when they are not in uniform to signify that they are military? I've never heard of that before and it sounds really retarded. Everyone knows a guy in the military that's not in uniform will tell you he is or was in the military, they don't need a watch to vaguely imply it.

Also, the first time I saw this style was when I was a child watching reruns of Gilligan's Island. I guess Gilligan was a military man? What branch? Army sounds right.

I didn't just make that up out of thin air. I was in the army cadets as a teen and our company commander wore his watch in that way and when I asked him about it he told me that was the reason behind doing it. It is so when you have your rifle drawn like pic-related you can glance down at your wrist to tell the time without moving your hands. I think it's stupid to wear your watch like that in civilian life but I guess you got a point that if you're doing something where you're worried about scratching the crystal it would make sense.

I'm no expert on Japanese watches but my understanding is that the Seiko group owns Orient and operates it as it's more affordable alternative watch brand. So they are pretty similar watches in a lot of ways. I think Orient even uses Seiko movements, but I'm sure someone here would know more.

I've never owned either Seiko or Orient so I can't speak from experience but I know both get recommended a lot for first time buyers looking for a good affordable watch. Although Seiko watches have been climbing in price in recent years so they aren't really as entry-level affordable as they used to be. Orient has sort of taken that market share from Seiko.

I would say either would be fine choices for you.

so i bought the bambino ss. and it's time off is around 10 sec every 2nd day. which is pretty good i guess.
so that's why i wanted to stick with orient and to my surprise they have lots of nice looking punchy, contrasty, 80s style alike

No, you want them because swiss kikes spend a hell of a lot of money on ads.

Consuming product and then getting ready to consume more product isn't really staving off existential dread, it's just lining someone else's bankbooks with the profit of your labor. You're a mark, and you don't even see it.

If you want to buy a watch because you like how it looks, then fine. Personally I wouldn't spend more than 100 bucks on a watch because there are severe diminishing returns past that point, but if it makes you happy, go nuts. Trying to rationalise it to yourself with this gibberish is just sad.

What's "normal" to you.

50th percentile and/or median income in America are still pretty poor, but they're not in the market for luxury goods of any stripe.

If you mean "normal" more in line with white, educated Americans, a Rolex is not flexing, it's just a choice, one of many. A gold Hublot is flexing. A Rolex mostly means that the buyer wants quality but didn't want to think too hard about his choice.

Dont fall into the reddit trap trying to justify your watch by it being a diver (you will never dive with it) or a chronograph or whatever,

If your boutique doesn't have the model you want you ask them to order it. Most likely you will be put on a wait list.

I own one like this and wore it everyday but the crocodile strap completely destroyed my wrist. It took several weeks to heel. Now I only wear it occasionally.

I have one of these actually, for the office. It's decent for the money, more akin to the old Seiko 5 than the newer ones. No hacking, no handwiding. I quite like it, since it's cheap, small and has a good styling.

I have a homage from cadisen. It doesn't have the engine turned bezel. But it's really nice. It's 38mm thought (which was a reason for me to choose it, because I feel it is the perfect size for ma wrist).
