what do you think, could a spring drive movement be realized in a cheap(-ish) watch up to like $500, similarly to how even a cheap "pure" quartz movement only is off by a fraction of a second per day simply because of how it functions, or is it not as cheap to make a spring drive that runs accurately?
surely Seiko would never do it themselves, preserving that technology only for the high end models. but someone else once patents run out? let's assume that we'd be content with ±2 seconds per day.

I don't really understand the point of spring drive. So it mechanically produces electricity... just to drive a quartz crystal. Literally why not just get a quartz watch? You can get one of the many solar powered quartz watches way cheaper and still never worry about batteries.

For an actual answer, I was pleasantly surprised that this Ratio Freediver wasn't complete shit. I think it was about $130 in total for this 200m quartz model. It has a ceramic insert, sapphire crystal, good lume, and a bracelet with solid endlinks.

For cons, there are several since this was only $130. The lume, while being good, is blotchy in a few places. The bezel is aligned, but the seconds hand isn't. The Seiko quartz movement keeps time unlike the automatic movements typically found in this price bracket, but it's an unremarkable, barebones $4 quartz movement. The bracelet is better than the average Seiko bracket, but that's not saying much (which is why it's currently on a rubber strap). Additionally, there's the fact that it does nothing creative or new. This watch is a weird amalgamation of a Seiko SKX013-inspired dial, Citizen-esque bezel, and 80s TAG Heuer case, complete with a bracelet that is suspiciously similar to the one that comes with the Seamaster. Unfortunately, the other models are even more hideous. Finally, there's the name, and when you look at the dial, it sometimes says:
>RATIO
>REE DIVER

So far, I've been wearing it in situations where I don't want to damage a watch I actually care about. I wore it in the shower and while swimming and haven't noticed any water getting inside. I'll give an update once it shits the bed, but so far, it seems like a decent option for poorfags.

First of all, if you actually have situational awareness and avoid going to dangerous places at night, you shouldn't be so paranoid. Since there are so many fakes in circulation now, many people would just assume your Rolex is another fake. Second, if you like wearing the Sub but don't want to draw attention to it, take it off the blingy bracelet and wear it on a strap of your choice. It's an answer to a question no one asked.
By the time the first models came to market the time to ask such a question had long passed and seiko missed the window by about 20 years.
Fancy quartz is all it is, with all the cons of not only a quartz watch but also the maintenance considerations of a mechanical watch as well thus compounding any difficulties.
Also the trisynchroregulator or whatever the fuck has an IC, which will fail within 15 years because of the onions non-leaded solder now used in all electronics because of EU mandates.
Just don't unless you piss money and can buy whatever you want willy nilly, but even then, why?

No, they really couldn't.
Rolex produces approximately 1.2 millions watches per year. Each one of them is already sold to a customer the second they leave the factory.

Now let's say Rolex wants to increase its production by 10%. That's 120 000 watches to produce, ie the equivalent of IWC or Breitling annual productions.
To do that, they'll need to build new factories, hire workers, buy machines, etc. Basically what they are doing right now :

I agree that in a lot of cases day and date are done in really ugly ways that ruin the aesthetic of a watch, like when they just have a tiny square cut out that shows a tiny number. It looks weird. Unfortunately, yes. They have too much social anxiety to actually walk into a store and find out for themselves.

If you walk into a store, they will be helpful and ask if you need anything. If you say "No, I'm just browsing" they'll leave you alone. (After like two hours, they might ask you to leave, since now you're just loitering).
If you act like you escaped your enclosure at the zoo, loudly hooting, you will also be asked to leave.

But if you show up in jeans and a t-shirt, they won't care. They'll answer questions, let you try on pieces and if you decide "you need a little time to mull it over" they will helpfully give you their card and insist you call them if you have any questions.

Anyone have experience with protection film? There's a place that does them for a reasonable price but they are across the country and want me to send the watch in. Should I just sent it in or wait for my vacation where in Asia it can be done in a few hours while you're at the store. I want to wear it but I honestly do not want to wear it without the film.

I like the story of the banker who sets the bank clock by the break bell at a mill. I might butcher it, but the long and short of it is the banker wakes up and goes to work at the bank and every morning he sets the work clock to the whistle from the mill that signals it's time for break at noon. One day the mill foreman went into the bank and the banker asked him how they set the break whistle and the foreman said every day on the way to work he syncs his watch to the time on the bank clock so he knows he has the right time and knows when to call break.

It's more of an allegorical story about echo chambers and feedback loops and shit, but still.

There was a family of wretches in England that pooled all their money together to afford a very particular kind of exceptionaly accurate, for the time, pocketwatch usually only bought by the Admiralty because its great cost.
Every morning the matriarch of the family would travel by train to the Greenwich observatory (aka GMT time source) to set the watch, and would travel back to London by the opening of the day. Businesses bought a daily subscription from her and she'd go around on foot and flash them her watch with "THE CORRECT TIME" to which they'd set their much less accurate watches or clocks.
They held this monopoly for like 50 years or something.

Its mostly people's first watch in general, maybe they will grow, dunno. Or most watch nerds are really skinny and fragile, which is still better than being obese summo double chin motherfucker.
I wear an old nippon model g511 d I bought in middle school, when I train and its still comically gigantic, but it never bothered me. When I got into watches, I discovered that 40+ diameter is a problem, apparently.
I dont even have really big wrists i circumference, but they are flat and wide. My fists are big and I'm bulky, so I kinda make it work, and something elegant like damasko ds32 looks like a toy, dont get me started on nomos or basic hamiltons etc. Basically, it depends on overall frame, I think.

Honestly this is the final redpill about watches.
This "hobby" is so fucking cringe. Like, have you ever met a watch guy who wasn't a huge faggot? Is there a single watch YouTuber who doesn't sound like a complete retard? Most of you in these threads sound obsessed and unhappy, like a bunch of fucking junkies.
Watches are not that interesting to begin with, and most of them are ugly, too flashy or weird.

49mm lug to lug, measure your fucking wrist properly. Assuming a wrist width of 55mm, you're at a 90% ratio, which is within the 75-95% zone. Personally, I wouldn't wear anything over an 85%, but you could get away with it. What you won't get away with is how bulky it looks, I've yet to see any wrist comparison metrics that take into account how big the watch case is. Those squares are like 13mm thick.
