I tried on a Tissot PRX at a store today and was taken back by how cheap it felt for the $850 asking price. The bracelet feels like a metal Casio bracelet, poorly finished with uncomfortable sharp edges that dig into your wrist. The whole thing felt light and flimsy, the dial looked cheap in person. Everything about it was a disappointment.

Who buys that shit? It gets mogged by a Citizen for half the price.

Don't mind that guy, he's got issues. But yeah, diminishing returns on felt/perceived quality amongst luxury items like jewelry has these weird troughs of missing value and upcharging for name/brand only. Realistically theres a lot of $850+ watches that should be priced closer to $400 but because they have overhead like advertising they just charge people more. Also a lot of people pay those prices too simply because of brand recognition. Are Rolexes twice as good as GS? No but Rolex has badge so they can get away charging $20k for a watch they've been making for 60 years.

I think you should go for it, if it is something meaningful to you. You dont seem like the person who has/wants to impress others by luxury goods anyway. You might also see a watch as an investment, depending on a model wich suits both this purpose and your personal taste, it is certainly better than having the same amount of money in a bank account, being eaten awqy vy inflation.

The thing is, they don't respect moid cope horology like microbrands, "underrated" brands like grand seiko, or vintage anything. Those are strictly moid purchases for impressing other moids. well yeah, and at that price they were a pretty good deal
but after they were discontinued, and a bunch of people missed out on buying one when available, that turned people's minds to thinking that it was much more desirable a piece than it actually is

so now w have a bunch of dudes jonesing to get their hands on one, justifying to themselves the idea of picking one up on the grey market for maybe 100 over rrp, then 200, then the current prices where they're selling at 900+

and after all's said and done, it's still a 300 dollar watch

many such examples in the watch-world, don't let it phase you, go and spend your own 300 on something comparable, and likely better fitting than a sarb

what do you wear when wearing a watch during the winter? the sleeves always cover the watch and I need to be self conscious about it and try do adjust the sleeve but its never comfortable or looks authentic, and its annoying especially when I wear solar powered watches and I want them to get light exposure, how people do it? do you just wear very slim fit shirts/jackets so the sleeves are shorter and fit tight to the skin?

It would be very useful though to know that when you pay a premium price for an exquisite mechanical watch you don't really pay the guy assembling them.Such a high value technician wouldn't even be able to pay for one of the 100 watches they assemble in one month from their monthly wages even if they'd be eating nothing and not paying a rent in Basel which is about 2500 $ /month...There's a lot of myth around paying for the artful hand made jobs, but truth be told, being a very high valued technician in any of the high end watch companies or just any technical job in any domain is not what you may think.Try to find the real market wages the guys make your favourite watch for and you'll find that you actually pay a slave owner.

17 mm - which is tiny. I may try some (anti-)tapered straps, like swatch uses on the 34 mm classic gent. The dimensions of the watch are exactly the same as the MQ24, which I find ideal. However, the rubber strap of the MQ24 is also (anti-)tapered with 17 mm lug width but 20ish mm strap width.

Thought so because i saw the gap and i also have a Seiko with 19mm lug width and i used 18mm straps at first but the gap bothered me so much that i bought 19mm straps just for it. The watch looked off and too 'skinny' with 18mm straps but is perfect with 19mm ones. I would suggest you buy a (custom) 17mm strap if you can find one, there is a reason for the width to be what it is, it's about its proportion to the case diameter and as far as i am able to tell Seiko always uses straps that are at least half the case diameter or more (so 16mm would be too think and and 18mm a bit too wide in your case).

I own a Bambino, I understand its a Japanese movement assembled in china and they're fairly decent watches. But this one in your pic doesn't sit right with me. Errant button that does nothing. The balance of the offset day window, the random 3 stars (3 out of 5?) and how the indices are around the face just looks off. Slight tweaks would make this watch great, but for $100 its okay. Get it, you eurobitch.

anyone have any idea how much would this watch be worth? i would like to repair it but i think the snakeskin is beyond repair. im not sure how to know if its genuine... it was anniversary gift of sorts, and was gifted in 1964 (which is engraved on the back). there is also a fine engraved serial number on the back.

i appreciate any replies, i really like how this watch looks and would repair it if it has any value.

Take my advice. Most of you people shouldn't buy an expensive watch.

Hear me out. Expensive watches are for people who already have everything else in life. Nice car, house paid for, kids college paid for, maybe retired, etc.. If you are in that stage of your life, then buy a Rolex if it makes you happy.

Most of you could probably save up $10k+ to buy a luxury watch. But should you? I don't think so. There's so many more useful things you could spend that money on instead.. You shouldn't strain yourself financially because you want to appear rich. And if you don't care about appearances and just want one because you like watches, there are many affordable options out there to hold you over until you are at a stage in your life when it makes more sense to buy a luxury watch.

This advice doesn't apply to people who are mega-rich or old, but I reckon 99% of you reading this right now don't fall under that category.

Well those are almost 60 years old now. I don't expect watch manufacturers to keep spare parts of near 60 year old watches in stock, a lot of things have changed in that time, they probably don't even have the machines to make those parts anymore. It's an unfortunate situation for that anon, but with vintae watches it is to be expected. I own a vintage Seiko as well and i sometimes wonder that it wouldn't be a bad idea to buy another knackered but working one for parts to have a peace of mind if something does go wrong. There are plenty of them still around so i'm not worried too much yet.
