/btg/ BOOT GENERAL - CRAZY COW EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4/renovateur
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them an

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.

Yanko now has cheaper boots in stitchdown construction

It's cheap because stitchdown is obviously an inferior construction method

Does anyone know a good brand of boots with leather soles? The boots I buy now are +/- €200,-, but I suppose I'll have to invest a bit more for shoes that don't get lose.
I've been walking on boots for some time now, but something what always happens with the shoes I wear is that the sides (where your ball is) get loose very quickly, since my toes are crooked. I'm nearly on the edge of buying barefoot shoes because of this.

Got this information from a shoe carpenter, but I'm not sure how reliable he is. Never went to this guy before and have just fixed my current boots over there.

You'll be able to see the stitching underneath

Most makers will use soles like these that don't go all the way to the edge
American makers just don't give a fuck and stitch through the rubber treading

I guess gym bros wearing shitty tank tops everywhere to show off their muscles is cringe too. A desperate push for some kind of personal identity. I go to the gym and you would never tell by my university class clothes. Wear appropriate attire for the environment that you are in. Only let your personality and interests be known through actions, and not by how you look. This kind of subtlety will make anyone more likeable.

You will develop deeper, long term relationships when you aren't superficial. Wearing sneakers to larp as an athlete works only to make first impressions, and if you do it for the larp only then you definitely won't develop deep relationships, since anyone who will get to know you closer will think that you are a lame poseur. And if you do it to flaunt your hobby (eg gymbro tanktop) then everybody will see you as a boring, shallow individual with a single interest
This is a lesson that many larping autists on /fa/ need to learn.

Just got back from oz.
Bought some redback and mongrel non-safeties (pull-on chelsea).
Last inexpensive work boots made in aus unless rossi gets back into it.
At the moment, unless you find oldstock, the only rossi still made there are a few ltd ed. non-safety boots using aus sourced leather, their chunky desert boot and a "bushwalking" boot.
Redback and Mongrel, who I learned recently are the same family but split due to a dispute adidas/puma style, are aus made. Steel Blue are not aus made, but apparently qc is good and are reputed to be very very comfortable if you need safety laceups.

Sizing: the half sizes in the pullon boots are not longer but wider for redback, mongrel and blundstone. Dunno about rossi or baxter. Mongrel are already pretty damned wide such that I felt that mongrel's normal sized boots are as wide as redback's half-sized boot of the same size. So an 8 mongrel is the same width as a redback 8.5 (which is itself wider than a redback 8). A mongrel 8.5 was really wide if you need that extra width. For thicker work socks. I am getting by with thin socks with redback 8.5's and a mongrel 8.

Comfort: I'll get back to you once I've worn them a bit as I just got back and haven't had a chance. Feel like mongrel's are perhaps a bit better made on cursory glance desu senpai. Redback qc and finishing, as if that truly matters on a ≈$110AUD work boot that'll end up looking like shit soon enough anyway, are spotty. Not as good. Feel as if the redbacks would fail sooner all things being equal. More complaints about redback qc failures online too but I feel like that could possibly just be because they're a larger operation and probably sell more boots locally and abroad; mongrel is unheard of/non-existent outside of oz.

Mongrel seems more impressive overall, and more effort in presentation and packaging, again sif that truly matters.
Shopkeeper said he's impressed with what mongrel has coming up the pipeline; a brand to watch.

The best way by far is to go to their store and try them on. The reason they're so popular is because they are everywhere. Only high-end boot you can actually go to a store and try on if you don't live in three places in the continental US.

If you mean you already bought them and need them to fit, good luck. You're looking at desperate stretching methods at that rate like double socked shoe trees and taking a shower with your boots on (that last trick apparently used to be the recommended way to break them in at one point ~30 years ago)

this, there's a reason Red Wing is babby's first boot, and it's entirely because it's the easiest to find and get into. If you find a good store with a good general manager whom you can talk to, you can even try boots out and return them as you see fit (provided you don't severely fuck them up).
Big brain mode is going to a store to try them on, and then going on ebay to get them second hand.

I don't know if I'll jump in on the price tag for my first buy. What I'm curious about is the price difference for the Carlos Santos. I can't tell if they're cheaper because he has much lower overhead and his quality is up there with the others, or if there's a lower quality factor that I can't see because I'm not familiar.

I got my White's MPs in, it's the Division Road collab with the CF Stead Sepia Brown leather. I was worried that they might be too narrow even at an E width, but they aren't bad. Definitely more snug than other boots I have, but not too uncomfortable, at least just walking around the apartment. That said, do you guys have any tips to help with break in? Not really used to boots this thick. White's recommends applying oil to the vamp 2-3x a week for the first month to help soften it up, but it seems a little excessive to me.

Raw leather that "gets wear on it" is literally just dirty leather. It gains color because it gets stained by something you can't get out.
You are walking around in dirty boots, and you should clean them, but if you clean them you're back to colorless, boring leather. So you want them dirty.
