I'm the same way. I WANT plenty of other watches, but the question I force myself to ask is "yeah, but do I want them enough to get rid of the current ones?"

With the PO, definitely not, at least not right now. The first gen SMPO is a classic. It will be a while I think before I want to move on from it.
The Piaget, on the other hand...I got it when I was into ultra-thin watches. Now, I'm more into complications. I've been looking at a lot of JLCs lately.

Hell, maybe something completely off-the-wall will catch my eye, like a Hublot or something.

Each subsequent watch is less exciting than the next unless it’s more expensive in my experience but then whatever is more expensive than what I have is just larping as someone wealthier than I am and way more than I feel like spending at this point desu.

I remember being totally unbiased (from watch boards) and getting the Planet Ocean Sedna straight from the AD. It felt really special. I got the Skydweller on a trip in Europe because I loved the size and complications. I remember along the way of buying these watches hearing about how bad Tag, Breitling, Hublot, etc are and that no one should buy them. I don’t care or agree anymore. The Monaco is cool by Tag. The super ocean is very nice for the price point. Hublot can make a watch which is interesting to me here and there as well. The whole point of having a hobby is to like what you’re buying or spending time with.

>Each subsequent watch is less exciting than the next unless it’s more expensive in my experience but then whatever is more expensive than what I have is just larping as someone wealthier than I am and way more than I feel like spending at this point desu.

I agree to an extent. Once I limited myself to only two watches, the hobby became less about shopping and more about research. The research is the exciting part now, not ownership.

e.g. I was really into independents (Daniel Roth, Roger Dubuis, etc) for a while and was strongly considering getting one of them as a dress watch. While I ultimately decided against buying one, I cherish the information I was able to gather and the people I met along the way in my research.

At the same time, I've come to view ownership of any one watch as a temporary thing. I own it and love it until I don't love it anymore, then I get rid of it. If I can't get rid of it, I'm obviously not done with it yet. No more needlessly hoarding six-figures' worth of watches I never wear just because I loved them at one point.

I saw you for the first time, outside the jewellery shop. Your face was white like a perfect porcelain doll. Your hands smooth as if made from mirror-polished white gold.

As I went into the shop, I could feel my heart racing. I watched you from a distance nervous to approach you. I could only imagine how you would feel like, the sound of your heartbeat, the perfect mechanism.

I went up to you, and as I held you in my hand, felt your skin, your meticulously crafted leather garment, I could not contain myself.

I turned you over so that I could at last have a look at your behind. And god almighty what an artwork you are. God knows how long I have yearned for this moment. To finally feel your cold, high polished skin against mine, your magnificent bottom exposed for me to admire.

As I place you on my wrist, I put you to my ear, and the sweet music of gears, levers and springs come to life.

Tick, tock.

That’s why I think it’s reasonable to care about resell of watches you want to own. If you are losing money each time you get bored of a watch you will be out of money eventually after trading around.

You know your post reminds me of those guys who have an entire case of watches worth hundreds of thousands or more and it makes me wonder if the watches even feel special at that point.

Either way I have just been enjoying what I have and it has been that way for about a year or so. It’s entirely possible I might never buy another luxury watch for myself or if I do I might be in 10 years or more. My girlfriend wants a watch when I propose instead of a ring so that’s likely going to be last purchase for a while.

This. They're the watches that get the most engagement, so they get pushed by the algorithm. Then people go out and buy those four watches because otherwise they get no engagement.

The shitty part is that even if you decide to go out and buy something that's not one of the 4 watches, don't try and post a pic online because all you'll get is

I've known the meme that in order to get a Submariner you need to buy a bunch of other Rolexes like the OP to get moved up the waiting list, implying OPs are easily attainable at ADs, but now I'm hearing that it's also the case now that OPs have waiting lists and you have to buy them at a markup on the grey market.

What's actually true then? Is the OP actually a Rolex you can buy without ripping yourself off going grey or wanking of your AD? Or does the model just not matter anymore, if it says "Rolex" then scalping chancers are hoovering them up?

>> No.17518306

>>17518300
OPs are a little tough in black, silver and blue but probably only a month or two. Grey market on those is maybe a grand over retail although you kind find deals around 6750ish (retail is 6100). The green is tougher, the pink is even tougher and the turquoise is basically unobtainium. Actually the Explorer seems a little easier to get from an AD these days than the OP oddly enough.

If you want a sub wait for a sub or pay the gray price which isn’t that bad. The AD situation is much much better than it was last year. I personally would not fuck about buying other watches if you don’t actually want them. You will end up losing money selling them to a grey dealer or getting lowballed since no one is going to want to buy OPs and Datejusts from some random guy (you) unless they can get them cheaply

>> No.17518311

>>17518306
Oh nah I wanted to get the silver OP but was worried they've got the same retardation surrounding them as with more desirable models, if it's just a couple months wait then that's fine

>> No.17518343

>>17518300
>What's actually true then?
It depends on many things like
>your area
>your AD
>(You)
For example, if you live in London, NYC or Paris and walk into the biggest AD on the most touristic street dressed like a clown, you'll never be able to buy a Submariner or even an OP at retail.

You CAN buy a Submariner even if you have 0 purchase history. Just go to a smaller AD, talk a bit with the sale assistant and show up a couple of times to show your interest.
Say things like "I have the money, just call me and I'll buy it on the spot". You have no idea the number of niggers who put their name on a waiting list and never show up when they get the call because they're broke.

Yes it sucks to do all that but you'll get your Submariner within 3 months.

It's nice. The quality/workmanship is indisputable. The size...is kind of a tweener. At 39mm across and 11mm thick it's a little oversized for a full-on dress watch but as a suit and tie watch its size is no problem. German watches seem to run large anyway. Depending on how casual your life is, you could actually wear it as a really sweet daily watch.

It's been around for a couple of years, so it's not like any of this is surprising.

The only thing that really bugs me about the dial is the "Doppelfederhaus" text on the dial. I don't like extraneous text on dials, particularly not on dress watch dials. Knowing that the movement has two barrels does not add anything meaningful to telling the time.

It started out as the list of watches that "OMG every serious watch collector NEEDS to own."
The first guy who said Sneedmaster, DJ and Tank is right in that regard. The Monaco and Lange 1 are icons of their respective brands, but I don't think there's any sentiment that you must own one to be a """serious""" collector.

I'd add the Black Bay 58 to that list. That's become a pretty popular consensus pick for divers.

Also,

Alright lads, SOTC time. My cozy 4-watch TF collection. I've been working on assembling it for the past couple of months. The theme of this collection is homage tool watches. All have at least 100m of water resistance (with screw-down crowns) and magnetic resistance to 20,000 A/m (250 gauss).

- Precista Mission Timer: Use it daily at work. ETA quartz movement, always ready to pick up and go. The black DLC coating is insanely durable, I swear it still looks brand new. The best feature is the center minutes chronograph hand. Extremely legible. Use it all the time. Design based on Sinn NaBo 17 cockpit clock.
- Baby Dreadnought: 300m WR. It's my casual, running errands everyday watch. Absolutely love the dial and handset. This watch is not really an homage, but it sort of looks like a baby Ploprof and that's really damn cool.
- Smiths Everest Expedition: My outdoors activities field watch. I really dig the historical significance of the original Smiths A454 this watch is based on.
- Smiths Trans-global: Has the specs of a tool watch, but fulfills the role of dress watch in the collection. The UG Polerouter is such an amazingly cool and unique design. As Caseback Tim once said, the best vintage watch is a brand new vintage watch.

I bought a g-shock gwm-5610 all-black negative display for my b-day back in august 2021, it's the only watch I own besides a seiko diver and I wear it monday-friday, I chose this one because I didn't like how colorful the normal positive display 5610 is.
then a few months ago I found out about the gw-5000u and it seems like the perfect watch for me.
have any of you guys tried both and do you think it's worth the upgrade?
I feel like it's almost the same watch but since I wear it almost daily (and I'm getting kind of tired of the negative display) it could be worth it.

Tudor is a proper solid big guy watch, nothing truly wrong with image, philosophy, tech and design. Its allready scraping mid-high tier luxury prices and position, therefore tries to be adequate. But there is one eternal irredeemable stigma it has, even normies are kinda in on it. That being a supposed "discount rolex" in form, said image, and discount price. It even is praised for being "what rolex used to be, and kinda affordable etc". Inherently, this fact puts it on a map, and simultaneously forever makes it a number two, robs it of some originality and real impact. Basicaly, those who buy it, are doomed to think, mention and live with eternal "its like rolex but cheaper etc" notion. Nothing majorly wrong with that, but considering the 4k price on average, its such a boring, safe and kinda apologetic choice by nature, it attracts the appropriate crowd. Aka "enthusiasts" who almost can into a rolex but kinda still cant, and at the same time dont have the balls or knowledge to pull the trigger on something original in that weightclass.

If that’s the watch, I went full circle with the submariner as far as liking it. Liked it when I was a kid, and thought it was unattainable unless you were insanely wealthy. Then I had enough money to buy at one point but felt like it was too cliche and everyone else had it so that made it bad. Now after autistically looking at watch forums for years, I think it’s a nice looking classic watch. It’s too high profile for me to want to wear it since I live in an American city and don’t want to get stabbed over it but it’s cool even though it’s basic.

junghans max bill mech is an ok watch if you want something "iconic" for effay points but desu the bauhaus concept clashes with mechanical watches in the modern era, you should get a quartz if "minimalist" is your kink. but if you're doing quartz you should do sapphire or mineral glass because acrylic is just wrist fedora le wrong decade shit. also le minimalism craze is done, like years ago, if that matters to you (probably shouldn't but just saying).
