Steel can be manufactured to be harder or softer depending on requirements. Generally, the harder you make it, the more brittle it gets. Apropos small watches, I was in the Blancpain store in Caesars Palace last week and checked out the 38mm Bathyscaphe. Apart from the strap, it was pretty nice. It looks tiny next to the other 45mm or 43mm BP divers, but on its own it looks very reasonable.
