I should mention I'm 6'6 290lbs so finding something my size at a thrift store is next to impossible
I don't want something too stylish or showy, this set of suits I get will mainly be for going to offices around my town and hocking my business, it should make people feel at ease with me, like I could be their neighbor or golf buddy. I can't style on them too hard.

You might be surprised by thrift store finds - you don't need to buy an entire suit at once there. I bought a pinstripe suit that the jacket fit, but the legs were long as fuck. A lot of the time there's plenty of jackets and trousers separate, and coming back after stock changes if another chance to find something in your size. Honestly the hardest to find at thrift stores is waistcoats, they will just have way less of them.
If you're set on a new suit, get something MTM- Hokerty, Suit Supply, ect. all do this, where you send them your measurements and make the suit to those specs. The price is higher than off the rack, but still cheaper than bespoke.

Go to a Macys/Dillards and start trying on the smallest blazers they offer. Look at the size that fits best, and run with or between the numbers.

Just find something that fits your shoulders and isn't too long, and you should be able to tailor everything else to size.

When it comes to suits, menswear equals womenswear in its strange differences in the same sizes.

Are there any brands that sell dress shirts in athletic fit? I've lost some weight and while the shirts I own fit me well on my shoulders, they look really wide around my abdomen

>> No.17492429

>>17492354
I'm thinner as well, and even quality dress shirts advertised as having an "athletic fit" or "skinny fit" are always cut with an excess of fabric. Some say companies do this to show they can afford to use the extra fabric, thus it is an indication of quality. Whatever the case I advise the latter portion of your comment to be followed. Every person's body is different, and unless your shirts are made bespoke, they should be brought to a skilled tailor to ensure a proper fit. If you like the shirts you own now you can just take them to a skilled tailor and get them altered, bringing in the waist and excess fabric overall is quite doable.

Suits cannot be tailored down a size.
Also, you've probably heard this before, but hit the gym you teenie-weenie dyel twink.
Alain dupetit and Asos have size 32 suits, but those are shitty fast fashion suits that are too short and skinny. Proper proportions will flatter your frame a lot better. The torso of your jacket should reach just below your palms, around your thumb knuckles. It's actually very real. He talks about it in his autobiography, My Life, which I highly recommend. Essentially, Mosley traveled to the US in '26 to study its industry. FDR contacted them out of the blue at their NY hotel, inviting them to meet him. They then went down to Florida to do some fishing on FDR's boat. Mosley admired FDR, noting his "Greek" beauty (which he juxtaposed to Eleanor's complete lack of beauty) and conviction. I attached another picture from the book.

Ok, heres an autistic idea:
I basically have figured out the exact style I like, and I'm gonna commit to building my wardrobe to facilitate wearing this exact style almost every day.
>3 button 2 piece suit
>fishmouth lapels
>suspenders
>batwing bow tie
>shoes are either winklepickers, spectators, or canvas high-top sneakers (third most likely since comfy dress shoes are expensive and I'm young enough to get away with it)
>shirts, if french-cuffed, are always worn with corny motif cufflinks
>socks always sport geometric patterns that match the outfits colors

Please ignore the people telling you to go straight to bespoke or MTM for your first suit. The only caveat there is that since you are quite big you may not fit nicely into off the rack stuff. Mall type stores like Macy's serve the purpose of letting you try on the suit and have an SA guide you. That said, most of those SAs suck, which is why I would suggest the following, if you have the patience:
-go to macy's and try on some suits. Figure out what size fits you best
-order that size and maybe one bigger size from either suitsupply or spier and mackay (just get the cheapest ones they offer). Make it dark navy or grey/chacoal. Black is not primarily a business color, while dark blue and grey can be used for most occasions
-Try them on at home, ask your dad for specific feedback, post a full body picture here
-keep the one that fit best, send the others back. Take your new suit to the tailor for minor adjustments like hemming
-If none of them fit well enough, then consider MTM. This is higher risk higher reward and if possible should be done in person.

I wear a size 34, have a 35" chest, 29 inch waist am 5'8" tall and get my shirts with a 16.5" shoulder. I think your plan to order something to try on and return it is good (im sure the quality will be horrible). If you have wide enough shoulders, then you can definitely get away with wearing a bigger size than your chest measurement suggests. You can't tailor down a size in most cases. There's definitely places that sell size 32. I think suitsupply does, and definitely asian brands. Might take some searching and you'll have to buy online and return if it doesn't work out.

>>17494007
They are on the wide side, especially for someone as thin as you must be. That said I don't think the width would be an issue when paired appropriately. The bigger issue for me is how low the gorge (v shaped gap between the top of the lapel and the bottom of the collar) is. That is a dated feature and will make that particular jacket harder (though not impossible) to wear

also if my style isn't tip then where am i supposed to post or talk about it? Like it or not, even if it's deliberately zany, it's still fairly /tip/, at least as far as I'm concerned. If my brown suit (which i've posted a lot) was the same pattern and color, but better quality and less of a trendy cut, it'd be totally /tip/, at least greatly /tip/-inspired, and so would my shirts, ties and my shoes, as pointy as they are.
And to be honest, isn't everything here not so much /tip/ as it is /tip/ inspired? The context that shaped ivy style and especially trad style largely no longer exists. Prep is the only one of the trio that's survived contextually, and even then, i went to an actual POLO event recently (as a casual security guard, not as an attendee), and the fits and cuts of what those people wore is the sort of trendy modern shit you people would scoff at. It's the same way people call an outfit "punk" or "dandy" despite it being a largely vestigial bit of cultural language based off a movement that was very dependent on the sociopolitical context of it's time.
None of you are totally, perfectly /tip/. You are styling modern clothes after inspiration from books and photos about /tip/. What I'm doing intentionally, you are also doing without treating it as such. Thats my two cents anyway.

theres a lot of grey area between "cosplay" and dressing in a real -life style and who can truly know for sure where they are on that scale? what would make it less cosplay-ish? wes anderson does kinda the same thing with his suits, having them made all in more-or-less the exact same cut, as well as having a formula to his style that he executes with nigh-autistic consistency.
also, bowties suddenly aren't /tip/?. I'm suprised you said to ditch those instead of the winklepickers or sneakers. But still, to say that canvas sneakers have never been a part of ivy or preppy style would be disingenuous.
>ditch the loud socks

I find it sorta weird how people in these circles will poo-poo things like geometric socks, bowties, or suits for being too loud, but see things like bright red suspenders (>>17497850), bright red socks, madras check, go to hell pants, and clusterfucks like this >>17495191 as totally fine, based even. Nobody is asking you to post anything. In fact you've been spamming your ugly wacky clown-like pictures for months and going on long diatribes about inane shit for no reason despite pretty much everyone telling you to go away.
Instead of taking the hint and realizing that nobody wants you on this thread, you keep doubling down and posting your weird ill fitting shit as if 'posting a fit' is some kind of virtuous endeavor regardless of what you post.

I say you are starved for attention because I see no other reason why someone would go out of their way to act like you do. Going on /tip/ or style forum which are relatively slow forums/threads compromised of short posts and stylish pictures to spam your obviously awful bozo tier pics, unable to ever taking advice and instead going every time on long rants about how you are actually in the right.
Imagine you are at a formal event like a wedding or funeral and this weird balding teenager who looks like he's in his 40s with bleached hair, tiny sunglasses, bowtie, piss bright yellow shirt, oversized pointy shoes and purple and pink socks starts lecturing people on random crap. Most people at first would think this is some kind of weird joke, maybe even laugh a little, but then after realizing this person is serious would probably ask him to leave, call security or leave themselves because this guy has ruined the event. This is you.

You're a pretentious, condescending, annoying, stupid, braying jackass. Now stop derailing threads with your bullshit, if we had decent mods you'd be banned already.

You do at least seem to be genuine and you put effort into your posts which is more than can be said for most of the board, but /tip/ is definitely not about being zany at least not for me and I'm sure for the majority of posters here

And in any case you've made far more than one post by now, anyway. imagine going in to a store like j.press and looking like a clown and asking about wearing beat up converse, that's what you're doing. respect that you post fits but honestly this thread is not the place to do so, feel free to make your own thread, some of us might actually post in it (and not be assholes). But if you come in to a general like this you're not helping your case, you're just causing people to dislike you, people who otherwise might even have had something nice to say to you. Just make your own thread. It's not like you'll bump off anything good, anyway.

>feel free to make your own thread, some of us might actually post in it (and not be assholes)
what would a thread like that even be called? and would anyone actually post in it?
last time i tried making my own general thread (/tsc/ - thrift store chic) it always got derailed by all the jackasses bitching and moaning about me because god forbid i do anything
Also, a lot of the "clownishness" you get from how I dress comes down to the fact that I'm short, so my proportions always look fucked, and my current wardrobe is cheap in a way that obscures my interest in this style of dress. I really do aspire to dress more /tip/ and have everything i wear be in a more classic cut, fabric, and style, but its a long road before that becomes an option. maybe it's just on me for being one of the poorfags this thread tries to keep out.
>>17502556
i'm not criticizing your taste at all, i like /tip/ and all the fits posted here, i'm just saying that i'd like it if you could acknowledge my sense of style as within the bounds of /tip/, because i think it's as good of a place to post my fits as any, but i don't want all the whiners derailing the thread over my outfits to become a permanent fixture, so for that reason alone it's probably better if i didn't.

Your "style" is not "within the bounds of /tip/". You seem to have mistaken this as a thread for any kind of tailoring or menswear. But in reality the acronym means "trad/ivy/prep". Just wearing a suit does not mean you fit into any of those styles. And from your previous comments on "slouchy clusterfucks", it doesnt seem like you understand or appreciate that style. So theres no need to try to fit in here or somehow debate us into liking your style. Arguing with people will never change their mind, they either think the look works or they don't, your justifications cant do anything to change our perception.

Also, Im a poorfag compared to most posters here and still get complimented on my fits all the time. Being poor is not an excuse for looking like a retard.

i've been thinking, and honestly maybe this fashion stuff was a waste of my time
i don't belong to any group whatsoever, and the only group of people I would have wanted the respect of fucking hate me.
I tried to cope away the fact that I'm just fundamentally incapable of looking good no matter what i wear for so long, but it was always going to stare me in the face eventually.
I don't hate you guys, nor did I really take any of your criticisms to heart. A lot of what you've said is stuff I already knew, deep down.
You live in your world, with your tastes and interests, and I live in mine. I was never going to be part of your world. I'm not some refined scholar, businessman, or rich kid. I'm a broke, terminally online autist who happened to develop a fixation on menswear despite it having no purpose or relevance to his life, if you can call this shit a life.
You're right, I'm cosplaying. I don't belong in a sport coat and ocbd i belong in fucking pyjama pants and a graphic tee like all the other degenerates.
I'm short, my face looks like shit and i have no money, no muscle, no life.
I still think my taste in fashion fucking rocks, but the fictionalized version of myself i imagined wearing it isn't me. nothing looks good on me and i should just focus on throwing a marginally better life together and getting in shape for the sake of my health, not for an aesthetic ideal i'll never reach.

I was thinking about it, and the J Press OCBD is actually not a bad deal. Companies that outsource, use synthetics, have bad collars/cuts, or just not enough classic designs still charge like $80-100 for their OCBD's. For $50 more you can get one that's cut perfectly and still made in the USA by a quality company. Ive had a bad habit of being cheap, but really with this stuff its better to invest in something that will please you rather than something you might regret.

Although, I just ordered a custom OCBD from Ratio, and that seems like a great deal, especially for MTM. The fabric I got was only $80 (most are $100+). You can choose an unlined "Fitzgerald collar" for the classic big roll look. Its still being made so i cant speak for the quality, but Ive seen guys wearing their shirts and they look really good.

Also, i dont really understand why it is seemingly so difficult for lower-end companies to just make good collar rolls. The construction must just be a solved science at this point, just cut the collar with the right measurements. And you do need a tiny bit more fabric, but i wouldnt think it's so much as to make the shirt out of their desired price range. And i would think that would be worth it to attract more savvy customers to their product. Maybe their designers are just incompetent or ignorant, or they dont think theres enough enough savvy customers to make any attempt at authenticity worth it.

maybe it would be better if there was just a more general suits and tailoring thread, you know.
like, trad, ivy, and prep are labels for a pretty niche title that most people don't intuitively understand. I mean, hey, we made it past 200 replies, if thats anything.
I know this whole group of people is super autistic about gatekeeping, but i'm not sure if theres enough people to justify them hogging an entire thread to themselves and telling anyone who comes in here wearing anything that isn't strictly /tip/ to gtfo (like this doug mf, as annoying as he is)
we could all probably discuss the exact same shit in such a thread, we just wouldn't have to worry about it dying so frequently

then again we'd have to deal with yet another batch of poorfags asking where to buy cheap pleated high waist pants for the 378496th time so theres definitely downsides to such a plan.

My eyes continue to evolve but the shoulders look good to me, I'm a big fan of natural / unstructured shoulders. Jacket does seem to hug your body too, so it's not terribly boxy which is a good thing. A tailor should be able to lengthen the sleeves, just go to one who speaks decent English (or whatever language is native to your country). My experience in the US is that asian's usually don't charge very much but the quality of work isn't very good, and they will refuse to make certain alterations because they do not have the skill to. I took a few shirts that were too baggy to one and he told me he couldn't do anything to fix it. Went to another (albeit immigrant) lady who spoke better English and she was able to make the alterations I wanted no problem. Point is shop around and don't be afraid to walk out if you feel uncomfortable. I'm not sure about adding length to the jacket as a whole, but I cannot conceive of how that would be accomplished. Worth asking though. I do like the pattern you choose.

what are your guy's opinions on cheaper made-to-measure suits from websites like StudioSuits and Hockerty?

It's a good base, but I'm not 100% on the jacket. Zippers might be a bit too modern for a /tip/ fit – if you could find something similar but with buttons it'd fit better. Also, footwear could make or break this. Which kind are you using?

I agree, I'll see what I can find next time I go shopping.

Not bad, but I think they also lean a bit modern. Maybe some loafers would do it?

not bad but I don't like that quarter zip that much, I think a darker color would have been better.

Any ivyish fits for summer that involve
>no layers
>no tucked in shirt
>no shorts
I like the ivy look but it only works in November-January here.
What can I do for the hotter weather?
I also feel too dressed up if my shirts tucked in while I’m just walking around town (please don’t crucify more for this, it’s somewhat arbitrary on my part). I also don’t do shorts because my calves are tiny as hell.
Best I could come up with was something like:
>short sleeve polo or henley in light but neutral color.
>warm weather chinos or similar pants in a more breathable fabric. Neutral colors- brown, tan, cream, etc.
>boat shoes/laced mocs
>maybe some argyle socks if I want to add a little flare.
Any thoughts or recommendations?

Never henley, go with polos and rugbies.
Neutral colors? Summer is the time for fun pastel chinos.
Get woven belts with colors or embroidering for flair.

Best summer polo brands?
I like my polos “athletic fit” if you will.
My actual polo Ralph Lauren polo is very loose fitting and looks very unflattering.
I like shirts to kind of hug me a bit. I especially hate when the sleeves are loose.

>tagline is "smart shoes for smart people"
No. They seem to offer Loake which is a half-way decent brand, but the majority of their offering is catering towards alt fashion styles (mod/skinhead/punk) and at a suspicious price point. What I mean by that is that you get a lot of cheaply made polished "leather" shoes at that price point that are "made in spain/italy/portugal". They're usually nothing to write home about in terms of quality and honestly you can find the exact same stuff cheaper if you buy it secondhand or nwt on marketplaces. The leather quality is very plasticky and won't break in very well. You're going to feel the lack of quality as soon as you put it on your feet. It won't be comfortable. Don't bother with these kind of companies. Save up for something nice secondhand.

What do we think about incorporating some military surplus articles of clothing within a more /tip/ outfit? I recently got a pair of OG-107 military fatigue pants and I feel like it could honestly work pretty well with a nazy blazer, loafers etc. Do any of you guys do this?
