I went through security today and had to take off my watch and the security guy noticed it was a nice watch and became visibly more deferential to me. I'm simultaneously ashamed of how good this felt and vindicated. The only reason to buy nice watches is to flex on people who make less than you.

You should service it. It will keep more accurate time and cost less in the long term. When lubricants dry/break-down over time it causes parts to wear out and break. think of all those tiny gears and springs and levers rubbing metal against metal without lube

It might still work for now but it's going to cost more to fix it when you eventually repair/service it because of the extra parts they will need to replace.

I think the value is more of the intangibles. Rolex is iconic and when you wear one it's a conversation starter - even normies know Rolexes and the looks of their more known models and you'll have more fun conversations about watches with it than you will any other brand.

I personally don't think the price jump is reflective of a quality jump - like Rolexes are not 4x better watches than Tudors - but you have an advantage where you apparently can wear 36mm no problem - so I'd just recommend getting a vintage datejust or something since you can get those for under $4k. Or an older Explorer II is fantastic since it's like $7k or so and 40mm and offers GMT function

Just had a thought, I was looking online to find out why some of the kampfschwimmer Panerais of 1944 had the California dial but no one seems to know other than just Rolex started supplying the dial once Panerai couldn't make the sandwich dial anymore.

These watches were anonymised to conceal they were made by Rolex and machining off all the Rolex logos works to that end when the watch is inevitably captured by the Allies, but perhaps they intentionally put a civilian dial into these watches in an attempt to disguise them as being for the civilian market when shipping them out of Switzerland?

Oh btw bought pic related, not a Nazi though.

Any opinions on microbrands? from what i can tell they mostly put some cheap seiko or miyota movement in (retro) diver cases with colourful dials and sell that as limited editions for 500$+. I wish they'd at least use quartz, would suit that kind of disposability much more. Are there exceptions to this pattern?

>> No.17508509

because well established brands are shit scared to do anything remotely interested looking and when they do it usually looks like shit
with microshitters you get to choose from literally endless variety
also most microshitters have high value for money when you compare them to other "well established" brands that use the same movement while providing jack shit by being "well established"
some of them even actually like watches and do proper r&d instead of slapping together random parts that don't fit together

its really two hobbies, one is stargazing and the other is astrophotography. To get something out of stargazing i guess you need an inherent appreciation of what you are looking at as the hobby mainly just consists of searching for a target and observing it. Astrophotography on the other hand is pretty technical so its for people who enjoy 1. looking at the universe 2. tinkering (3. and spending money).

Lmao imagine admitting to being this shallow, there's so much to learn about the history of watchmaking, the mechanics of how they work and the search for scarce information about obscure references *is* the hobby.

If an interest in watches is just flexing and wearing jewelry for you, that's fine, but that's not having an interest in watches. You have an interest in watches in the same way people can have an interest in WW2 and the machines used, or an interest in art and design, etc.

If an interest in watches for you is limited to wanking over the most well known watches and aspiring to own them just because they'll be recognised by non-watch enthusiasts as expensive, if you buy a few expensive widely recommended luxury watches and then "go off the hobby" because it's not netting you the attention you wanted and you're bored of making large self-confidence boosting purchases, then I'm sorry, but watches were never your interest.

But for that kind of money I expect more than nice finishing. The accuracy of their 9S movement and their steel bracelets are a massive let down and people should expect way more from GS. The SpringDrive's are nice, but they suffer from the same issue of the bracelets.

Also idk if you've noticed but MSRP for many of their recent releases are going beyond $10k, which is insane. T

The Rolex OP predated the Tiffany Nautilus but because it's close it got nicknamed Tiffany too and the fanfare of the Nautilus blew up the price.

I don't think Tissot was trying to capture this with the Mint Green - it's pretty far off from the color - but gets the nickname anyway because people want to make watches seem more exclusive than they are (the people doing this to the OP are no different really)

You're right - even being spot on won't make a watch a Tiffany Watch so the nicknames are stupid. But I find it even stupider to call a green watch blue.

Case in point - Tissot dropped some new watches recently, and I've already seen people calling the new frost blue Tiffany Blue as well. So now you have 2 completely different color watches from Tissot being called Tiffany Blue. It's ridiculous.

For years Grand Seiko was touted as one of the most underrated watch makers, and eventually enough people talked about it that now it's probably overrated a bit. They make a great watch for a fair price, but so do many other brands. The only thing that really sets them apart is the Spring Drive technology in some of their movements.

Unfortunately I think their association with Seiko will always hold them back. Seiko has a brand image of being an affordable watch maker for the every-man, and your average luxury watch buyer prefers to own something more unobtainable to the masses. Also most only want a Swiss luxury watch instead of Japanese.

There's probably some truth to that. I think GS will always be niche because it is seen as a more expensive Seiko, and the perception is that most people would rather buy something other than a Seiko if they were going to spend a lot of money on a watch.

It's not like people consider Rolex to be just a more expensive version of Tudor. Their premium line is front and centre, and the more affordable line comes secondary, and that just isn't the case with Seiko.

I walk, use mass transit, and ride bicycles (the human powered kind) because I can afford a place in a neighborhood that doesn't suck. My ratio rules don't apply to practical forms of transit like a bicycle because such things are a source of enjoyment and convenience rather than irritation and stress, like an automobile.

What good is owning a car besides going on a trip once or twice a month to a place you could just take an uber to or if you really need it, just rent one? The rest of the time you have to house it and care for it like an obnoxious mentally retarded child that weighs thousands of kilograms, and you get nothing in return other than to impress third world people who think car ownership is some kind of milestone, similar to your first gucci track suit.

God how is this pissing match still going

Cities are fun. There's a lot more culture and night life in a city than the suburbs and living in the middle of everything gives you more opportunities for life experience. Living in the city is fun when you're in your 20's

It comes at the cost of cost - higher cost of living, most likely renting - even if you own it's most likely a condo type deal with big monthly fees. Not really an issue when you're in your 20s, but when you grow up and want to settle down get a bit more space have some ownership etc. it makes sense to widen your circle a bit so you can get more for your money.

The suburbs have their own costs too - mostly in the form of time - you spend time driving to grocery stores or bars or anywhere you need to run errands. You want to catch a concert? Have fun with an hour uber ride or an uber and train ride to get there. In the suburbs you need a car with insurance gas etc. so you'll spend more in addition to repairs to your home since you own now and not rent. But you get to own the home at the end of the day so it's ultimately a net positive.

Now let's put our dicks back in our pants and talk about watch nerd shit

It's not hard to make a thin quartz watch because the movements are so small.

Thin mechanical watches are much more impressive because they have more moving parts and require more space. Piaget holds the record for thinnest mechanical watch at 3.6mm, it's a huge engineering achievement that they made it that thin

Perezone does an absolutely great job in going into those watches. The dial was really made initially to reduce confusion when reading. We only know that Rolex supplied Panerai the watch due to the French documenting everything so we'll.
