I do that with nearly everything. I do want stuff for a month or longer, but realize buying another trinket, bauble, or toy won't make you happier, and delays other life and money goals.

I'm beginning to be like an old person of not impulsively buying shit after shallow justifications like "I work hard and its only $250". I'd rather pay off my house, get an easier lower paying job, then save up to buy nicer stuff. That $120 g-shock I've wanted for years. I have no immediate use for it other than "lets expand my collection". You don't get points, win awards, or improve your life with a collection.

Personally, I think 3 is ideal, it's enough for some variety but not so many that watches go unworn for months. For me, the most number of watches I *need* (insofar as anyone needs any watches) is 2: a dressy watch and a sports watch.
My collection's been as high as 12 watches but, like you said, so many of them went unworn for months and I didn't like the idea of having six figures' worth of watches just sitting in a box doing nothing.
I also like my dressy watch to be casual enough that I can wear it daily. (So no more 34mm, ultra thin, gold watch on a thin gator strap)

Right now I have a Reverso for a dressy watch and a Planet Ocean for my sports watch.
I'm thinking of replacing the Reverso with the JLC Master Ultra Thin Perpetual Calendar. I'm not sure what I'd replace the PO with, but I'm always looking.

Sure but it's a pleasant coincidence that most beater watches have some kind of timing functionality, either an alarm with a digital watch or a dive time bezel, I've combined the categories because their requirements are basically identical and while exercise is no doubt more frequent than beating your watch, everyone needs to do some DIY now and then or doing something outdoorsy, so I think there's no need for two different watches in this case.

Contrast this with how ass-backwards the Apple Watch is, a fairly expensive and fashionable piece of tech that is simultaneously an exercise watch but also something its owners are not going to want to show all scuffed up at the bar and will therefore endeavour to protect. You'd absolutely want a second beater watch on top of your Apple Watch.

This is kinda what I'm working towards in a budget-conscious register, and maybe someone has ideas for helping fill it out. My first watch was a duro, slapped a silicone strap on it and got in the habit of actually wearing a watch everywhere. Then a year later or so so I picked up my first automatic, a bambino (in the picrel colorway), so I would have something a little more appropriate to wear in the office/court/depositions. I'm working on picking a casual sports watch a step up from the duro rn, ideally something (1) on a bracelet, (2) not a diver, (3) not quartz, and (4) under a grand. I think that would basically fill out my actual, wearable watch needs for the forseeable future, unless and until one of my cases hits and I buy something stupid and expensive to celebrate.

Who fucking knows? The reason why Seiko became the watch brand recommended to newbies is due to a discontinued watch. The SKX was supposed to be an Southeast Asian exclusive, but because of the continued fallout from the 1999 Asian Financial Crisis, retailers began to covertly sell these watches to Americans for under $200. For that price and despite the shitty 7S26 movement inside, it was a bargain at the time.

Seiko watches don't offer all that much value today. They are overpriced for what they are, especially with their persistent QC issues and crappy 6R movements. Back in the 90s, Seiko had the hi-beat 4S movements that actually gave the Swiss a run for their money, but they were discontinued for some reason. Seiko also had excellent jeweled thermo-compensated quartz movements, with some having perpetual calendars, but again, these were discontinued for some fucking reason. The meme of "Seikos offer good value" has outlived the forums where it came from and has continued to persist on Reddit and YouTube despite it being years since that was actually the case. I hate most of the YouTube watch channels since most of them don't have a fucking clue of what they are talking about outside of superficial basics and marketing dribble that was force-fed to them.

It's not just exclusive to Seiko either. With the Swatch Group, you have Tissot and Hamilton. Tissot watches are shit because of their caseback design. Tissot for decades have been using this retarded press-on caseback with a disposable red crush gasket since it saves them money not milling out threads for a screw-on caseback. Everytime the caseback is removed, the gasket needs to be replaced, otherwise the caseback won't go back on correctly and the water resistance is compromised. And don't get me started on that Powermatic 80 garbage.

I hate it how most of the people talking about watches on the internet today are either retarded speculators, insecure idiots, or smooth-brained consoomers. I'm talking about Tissot crush gaskets dumbass. Yes, you can theoretically put the caseback back on using the used red gasket but that would compromise water resistance.

There's a reason why they are affordable.

Why do you have to talk like an asshole? The Vostok is less accurate because the movement is built to looser tolerances to prioritise durability and longevity, a drunk working with worn out tools isn't going to produce something that has a 10-year service interval for such little money.

Compared to a Seiko that is going to shit itself in half that time and be a write-off on its first service, the Vostok makes more sense for a cheap mechanical watch.

Exactly, so what's your problem? Buy a Patek if you want no-compromise Swiss manufacturing.

Seiko, the official "my first watch" of the horology world, bringing both joy to newbies making their first step into the world of watches and disgust at the QC when they take their second step buy literally anything else as for their second watch

That's not true. Lubricants inside of watches dry up within 5 years, which is why it is recommended that watches gets serviced every 4-5 years. (By the way, Rolex isn't being truthfully either when they say that their watches can go 10 years without servicing.) There isn't a mechanical watch movement out there that can go through 10 years of fair use without maintenance and not show signs of damage. It's just the nature of the beast.

Everyone does though, it's an inexpensive watch and nowhere in Tissot or Hamiton's marketing do they claim to have no-compromise manufacture.

I don't believe the Tank Louis Cartier currently is available with an automatic movement. The only mechanical movement is a hand-winder.

IIRC the only automatic Tanks currently are:
- Française size L
- Must size XL
- Américaine size M & L

There's the fact that it says "Swiss Made" on the dial, despite the case and bracelet having being made in Asia. Also, the Powermatic 80 and its derivatives have plastic components, depending on the grade of movement, and are difficult to regulate outside of the factory. The Powermatic 80 was heavily influenced by the shitty and disposable Sistem51 and it shows. Let's face it, the Swiss watch industry is among the most opaque and scummiest in the world.

Beside the issues already mentioned, Hamilton watches are know for lacking anti-reflective coatings on their highly reflective crystals and terrible lume, even when factoring in the price. But hey, it has "Swiss Made" on the dial.

I own this watch in blue. Love it. Best value true GMT (swiss at least) on the market.

I know they're all Swatch Group, but I've liked hamilton's designs recently, then I go try them in stores and they feel like shit for some reason. Just really cheap feeling. Not the case with Mido

>Says "Swiss Made" on the dial
So take it up with the Swiss government, as soon as you substantiate the claim that Tissots and Hamilton have cases made in Asia other than an image with "TISSOT HONGKONG" printed in ink on a case back.

>the Powermatic 80 and its derivatives have plastic components
Disposable components for a disposable movements, again no one thought the Powermatic 80 was the pinnacle of watchmaking.

>The Powermatic 80 was heavily influenced by the shitty and disposable Sistem51 and it shows.
Wrong, it's based on the widespread ETA 2824, you're thinking of the Swissmatic movement.

>Let's face it, the Swiss watch industry is among the most opaque and scummiest in the world.
That's capitalism baby, literally every industry is run by people who value profit over integrity because that's who capitalism rewards.

None of this changes the fact the average Tissot is like $400 in a market where watches can go well over 100x that, if you expect 100% Swiss made handicraft then you've only tricked yourself.

No, it wouldn't retard, you're talking out of your ass.

The point of the red plastic gaskets is that hey last almost forever (typically only needing to be replaced if some ham-fisted monkey damaged it during a battery change), they don't even need greasing. I've pressure tested a fuckton of these, using the appropriate watch tester device, and they're good like 99% of the time. Literally 20 year old red gaskets are in-spec and good for re-use, the normal rubber gaskets are completely dead at this point.
