/btg/ BOOT GENERAL - LUGS EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4/renovateur
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and don't wear them daily for too long

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.

my carmina MTO with lugged soles in ETA 50 days

>> No.17476278

>>17476275
I once saw a picture of a guy who had made shell cordovan boots in brown (col4) and the toecap was red (rubi).

Obviously a mistake in their builder but Carmina didn't even bother to check if this was intentional before building a $1200 pair of boots.
And the guy just posted about them without mentioning the 'issue' at all, playing it off as totally normal boots

>> No.17476280

>>17476278
that's weird, carmina usually ask (or not even bother to ask) if they think something is retarded and just change it.

>> No.17476294

My carmina MTO experience is that i use the builder, then message Sara or Brenda and notify them of anything i want to do that wasn't available in the builder or other special mods that they rely over to the factory.
If it doesn't work they will inform you and just refund or work something out, although this never happened to me, the manufacturing department always approved of my modifications so far. Takes about a week or so to get it done.

>> No.17476306

>>17476294

Carmina already has so many options, what kind of stuff isn't covered?

Carmina MTO is so daunting I have no idea what I want with the lasts or leather

>> No.17476318

>>17476306
it depends on the model ur customizing, some are missing a lot of options. You can also have small design changes, change speedhooks into eyelets etc, tell them to match colors instead of picking your own. You also need to ask specifically for some special leather options, like some rarer shell colors, russian calf or janus calf.

>> No.17476319

Also not all models might be available to choose from on the website, you'll have to ask personally for them to use that model too.

>> No.17476334

>>17476316
Nobody uses most lasts, people always go with Rain, Forest, Oscar, maybe Detroit and Soller for wide or Simpson for narrow.

For all we know the other lasts could be amazing but you will never find any info on them on the internet, Carmina stores do not stock them and also Carmina stores are known for being hostile against would-be shoppers who want to try on different lasts.

I got my vibergs today from the big sale and I had questions about that one, too.
>Pic related boots
>Pic doesn't do it justice but heel does not sit flat. It, in fact, is cambered forward some like in that pic
I assumed this was so it would always land flat when I walk, but for this to work, they had to make assumptions about my height that are wrong because I'm a manlet with huge feet. So every time I walk, it feels like I'm being pushed forward and it's awkward on my balance, I imagine this is secretly killing my knees but I took them off while they're still mint.

I'm tempted to return them but the #1 thing they did very, very right were these Lactae Hevea Tzar Sawdust Soles. The softest gumshoe soles I've ever put on my feet, literally like walking on a cloud. I'm not sure that's worth $700, and certainly not when I could probably get a MTO Whites boot that uses one.

>>17476559
What's weird last doesn't even look better than my Wolverine 1000 miles do. Maybe this is up to tastes, but people were pissing and shitting themselves in these very threads over 2030's looking like the best boot ever made and how slim and sleek it makes their foot. Wolverines have them beat in that department.
I may have fell for viral marketers, but I can't imagine a boot thread on 4chan with 2 dozen posters would attract any when there's a reddit boot forum with literal thousands of people.

idk, what do you think, /btg/? Return them or keep them in hopes the heel 'evens out'?

That’s wrong. My Vibergs sit fine, my parkhursts have the slight tip, and I returned oakstreet because they were fucking garbage and way too narrow (I’m a brannock E and a FF in a proper shoe). I would say parkhursts are very comfortable to walk in, but I’m an academic.

>> No.17476578

Looking at this image, they have something holding the heel flat while the rest of the boot is off-kilter. Look at the ball of the foot and how crooked it is. The ball is where the shoe would balance normally.
Even then it's not entirely even, look at the other side of the heel and notice that it's crooked, too.

Since the boots are new and you don't know how long they've been on the shelf and what were the conditions in which they were stored, you might want to at least give them a light conditioning. Get a shoe brush, horsehair recommended, and brush the boots. After that get a drop of conditioning on your fingertips and spread it evenly over the boot, get more drops as needed. Leave the boots rest for fifteen minutes to an hour so the leather will soak in the conditioner. Brush lightly again and use a cotton cloth to wipe off lightly any residue or area that looks too greasy. The leather should feel supple and slightly oily to the touch afterwards. Not dry nor moist.
Afterwards, a light brushing after every wear should be more than enough to keep the boots in shape. Condition again when the leather feels or looks dry.

I think you're too young, naive and probably don't go outside too much, locomotives nowadays don't use coal. They use diesel, half of the space taken on the locomotive is for the diesel engine and turbocharger. Although it's the motors on the wheels - called combos - what push the train forward.

I think those kind of boots are just fashion oriented, may be useful for motorcycle riders. I used to ride a motorcycle to work and there was a time where the laces on my boot became undone and the chain ripped off the cord completely. It was scary.

Lace gap should be minimal and is a dead giveaway at too small/narrow boots. Well made boots from actual bootmakers like Alden, Trickers, C&J, EB, and even Whites cut their patterns for very little gap. (((Viberg))) surprisingly fails at this.

Like the name says, they were originally for engineers... the guys who ran coal fired steam engines.
They were the go-to work boot until WW1 and 2 made lace-up boots much bigger industries with the demand for service boots.

nowadays the niche they served are more often filled with cowboy boots or rubber boots, so the engineer boot is mainly popular with bikers and people with exceptionally good taste in handmade leather boots.

Bootbros.. I got my pair of Truman Java Waxed Flesh (commando sole) yesterday after waiting 8 weeks exactly. I'm super impressed so I felt like writing this shill post. Right away I like these even better than my Lofgren black combat boots which cost more than twice as much.

I keep looking over them, trying to find a flaw and I can't, everything looks perfect. The leather and stitching are flawless. The only thing I'm dealing with is the left arch feels slightly higher than the right one, but that could just be my foot. Anyway I expect it to go away once I break them in.

The appearance of the toebox on boots can vary a lot. my lofgrens have an almost clown-shoe look. Thursdays are narrow as fuck like something an imp would wear. Some boots out there have an enormous sole that sticks out like 5mm from the actual shoe like those fucking george castanza basketball trainers. These trumans toes are perfectly sized and rounded, without any extra overhand. Like a B-cup titty.

Also appreciated, the 2 speedlace hooks actually work, and they work with fat leather laces. My lofgrens only accept cloth laces and they constantly slip off and it's annoying as fuck to deal with.

Finally, most of the boots on btg actually feel like shit in the sole. They are aggresively hard and only slighty soften with time. Like Iron Rangers, those are fucking punishing to wear. Do people with IR hate themselves? These trumans are comfy right out of the gate. I was surprised.

In 2016 I visted a Carmina store in Madrid. I think there's two in Madrid. I went to one on a high class shopping street somewhere.
Tried on a bunch of shit and came to the sad conclusion that not a single Carmina last fit my fucking feet. I put my shitty-QC worn out trubalance indies back on and left dejected. No complaints about the staff though. Accomodating staff, at least back then.

The same scene repeated itself all along Jermyn Street in London; tried on shit from EVERYONE. I mean every single shoemaker on fucking Jermyn street cept the bespoke ones obviously.
C&J now there were some right cunts: incredibly pushy, hardsell salesman all scrambling over eachother to coerce you into a sale.
Most pleasant and accommodating in the RTW scene were Cheaney and Edward Green.
Apart from Cheaney's repro military boot last, not a god damned thing from Northamptonshire's best, mediocre nor from their worst.
This sad event was repeated one last time that trip in Budapest at Vass. Vass had two shops: one staffed by some moody bitch and the other seemed like the real Vass shop with moderately better service. Hungarian service isn't anything to write home about though.
It was then I realised that until I went full bespoke I'd have to stick with shitty alden. Haven't been back to europe since though.

Made copius notes of that trip. Meant to make a thread here detailing it but never got around to it. If I can make it Europe some time it's off to Vienna to a specific bespoke maker who had impressed me more than all the London bespoke makers, including Lobb St James, in all aspects including in not acting like a bored, world weary cunt. Suppose you have to be a regular at White's up the street before they perk up a little at Lobb. Not rude at Lobby, just kinda dead-eyed and robotic.

Still, a lot can change over the years. All the older sales reps could be dead or retired.

All of them have pronounced, pointy toes. How does that actually look on a normal foot where your foot doesn't reach all the way to the end? Is it a perspective thing? Are they not all that pointy?

yeah. the 2030 "E" is more like a D last for most brands. and their "EEE" is more like a real E
it's pretty common to see a guy who normally wears 9Ds to order 8Es from them instead. It's dumb.

But I looked at photos of their penny loafer in suede and the pattern just does not look right to me. This is on the rounded 363Mod last, but the apron looks like a triangle to me.

Dainite is also a brand, but most people refer to 'Dainite' as the stupid studded soles.
Vibram (the brand) also makes a clone of the same studded soles as Dainite.

I will never understand why people like them.

If you want low profile, rubber soles like for example Edward Green's R1, TLB's City, Carmina's Tomir, Bonafe's Millerighe etc are all much better and actually grip.
And honestly Ridgeway soles are not 'high profile' by any means and are infinitely better for both grip and comfort. Literally no one will notice that they are not exactly flat to the ground.

Unfortunately they were closed when I visited that year.
I was talking about pic related. Was initially lead to believe that they were more elitist than Lobb St. James but was pleasantly surprised to find that upon entering I was greeted by a 7th gen Scheer who politely, and enthusiastically, answered all my questions.
But there was something different about this place, and as I talked with Scheer it was niggling at the back of my mind. As he left me to peruse some old footwear they made for some emperor it finally hit me:
there was a constant stream of noise coming from upstairs.
Hammering and sawing. Work sounds. Actual work sounds. Every single bespoke maker in London that I visited, and I think I must've gone to about 5, were sterile showrooms devoid of any sense of being a place where awesome shoes were made. Because they weren't: they were measuring rooms. Only Lobb seemed to make some things under their roof of their St.James store, but when I went the place was silent, and kinda dingy dark desu. Most English bespoke is made elsewhere apparently in small rented workshops in some historic factory district. I got the impression from talking with a smaller maker that a lot of the grunt work for almost all the brands was done by the same handful of skilled guys, because there really aren't that many of them left.
But here at Scheer I was hearing the actual shit being made right then and there. It left the distinct impression of authenticity, actual authenticity, on me and I hope to return there one day to get some boots made.
Foster and Son in London also left a good impression iirc.

There are two measurements on Brannock:
>Heel to Toe
>Heel to Ball
If you size your boots to your H2B measurement you usually will have a good fit, you are supposed to have some room in the toe. Size 11 is generally about 11 inches long insole, if its true to size, thus why most people size 11 H2T measurement are about a 12 H2B, because size 12 gives the correct amount of toe clearance regardless of H2T length. This varies depending on the type of shoe and last though, some shoes will have a much longer clearance needs like almond toes, they should be extended. If you size your H2T measurement 11 and you order size 11 almond toe that is true to size, you will not have a good fit, it will be too tapered and pinch your small toes. Etc.

Cutting a boot in half does give you good insight, but he overvalues materials while rarely looking at construction technique.
Goodyear welt for instance, is perfectly good and durable unless you use cheap canvas for the gemming. Rose Anvil has never examined the quality of the canvas gemming in any of his videos.

I think that Trenton & Heath / Potter & Sons is a better source of information, although they look at far fewer boots. When they're taking boots apart and rebuilding them, you'll get commentary on when something is cheaply/poorly built.
>but they rebuild boots with cork
They replace cork with cork and foam with better quality foam, because that's what the customer was used to.
They also replace cork/foam/rubber with veg-tanned leather slabs when the customer requests it. But that adds cost and most shoe-wearers don't want/understand the appeal of standing on solid leather.
Yes I am wearing White's boots right now, how could you tell?
Their customers and I typically have different taste. But that doesn't make them a bad source of info.

Anyway.
Same as it always is: more info is always better. More sources = good, unsupported sources = shit.
When Tecovas started coming on the market the top complain was "they're not durable" but no one had details on why. Trenton & Heath have resoled at least two, one had acceptable canvas gemming in a $300 boot, the other had a leather channel cut. In a cowboy boot, you want the leather channel. I can only assume someone saw the canvas gemming and panicked, but Tecovas are perfectly good boots for the price point. They're not Rios of Mercedes or Chisos but they don't cost $700 either.
And god forbid we talk about L*ccheses.
