Allegedly Seiko owns Orient but between those 2 I'd get the Seiko. Open hearts are neat to look at like the first 20 times, after that you just stop seeing the tourbillion. If you have a crystal caseback watch, try to think when the last time it was you flipped the watch over and just looked at the tourbillion specifically? I think I looked at my caseback once in the last 6 months.

I have a non open heart Orient, love it generally. Just bought a Seiko, verdict is still out.

I've lost my trusty marathon field watch. What should I replace it with?
I'm looking for a beater, smaller size (35mm tops) possibly light dial, and good lume (or tritium tubes, even better).
I'll be working with it around the workshop all week and taking it hiking and sailing most weekends.
Quartz or automatic, I don't care, as long as it's no more than 3-400$.
I don't like cathedral hands, that's a deal breaker. Who said beggars can't be choosers?

>muh cosc-certification
turns out, I don't care if my watch is +/- 2 seconds per day or +/- 5 seconds. It's close enough and the dial doesn't have gradations for seconds so I can't tell anyway.

What I have, instead, is a watch that is extremely lightweight and comfortable, not some boomercore Bond-LARP dive watch.

It's a plastic watch body with a faux chrome plating.
I've had mine for like five years.
It's completely fine.
The finish scratches over time, but that's just normal wear and tear.
The only time I've seen the finish come off is with a guy who wears his while working on his car.
He's way harder on his watch than I am.
Fortunately, these things are only like $25, so it's not like it's hard to replace.
If you're wearing it in a non-machine shop setting, it will be fine for a very long time.

yeah, timex and casio has very similar stuff. The hard part is decent lume since i've blasted a watch in the sunlight or with flashlights and its readable in a dark closet for a solid 2 minutes. Great, its then useless in absolute dark. Don't let a useless feature like lume be a dealbreaker. Timex Waterbury might be what you're looking for, you just have to find a style you like then seek out the light or white dial. Keep in mind too, if you're in the <$50 range, you may have to swap out a band if you like the watch but the band is a bracelet or a cheap leather one.

That specific Casio doesn't have lumed indices, mostly because as an adult I can still tell the time on my wrist without any indices even in broad daylight. You just look at the hands. You cannot deny lume is fully useless if you're in the dark longer than 10 minutes so demanding lumed indices and hands and whatever else is kinda dumb.

Its why I suggested the Timex Waterbury. (Or any timex really) Some have lumed hands and indices but they still have indiglo on all of their watches. Its still the very best way of reading the time in actual dark. It doesn't ruin your night vision, its not like pulling out a flashlight or phone, and it just works well. I went to snap you a pic but my Waterbury battery is low enough to keep time but when I push the crown for indiglo the watch stops only to resume again after releasing the indiglo. Time to buy a case knife and replace the battery I guess.

In actual darkness, where you can't make out the case of the watch, just lumed hands are not enough to tell the time, you also need lumed indices. Lumed hands provide one information only, i.e., the angle between the hands, which doesn't have a one-to-one correspondence with the time.

But no, you don't need indices to tell the time. The minimalistic watches that don't have them still work. You can still tell the time without indices, just say you like them and want them to show up on a watch because autism. Also, indiglo is usually blocked by indices and other markings on timex stuff so you'll have those as a "negative" when indiglo is used.

The good thing about the Santos is that the system for swapping the bracelet with a strap is tool-free and takes seconds.

When you buy one, it normally comes with a brown calfskin strap (which actually looks really good) but you can swap it out with any other strap at the boutique. On a black gatorskin strap it looks very sharp.

Then, when you want to go back to normal, casual wear, you can snap the bracelet back on.

The Khaki gets the most wear out of everything in there, and I've had it since 2016.

I'm of the firm opinion it's the best entry Swiss auto on the market. I have treated it very roughly and banged it all over the place, and no worries at all. My third day owning it I snagged it on the backstay of my sailboat and put a huge gouge in it from the stainless steel braided wire under high tension, popped the strap, and it fell 6 feet onto the deck and then into 35 feet of water. Fished it out, tossed a NATO onto it and kept sailing.

Sapphire sandwich, plenty of WR, legible dial with good lume. It also has just enough polish that you can wear it formally and it doesn't look insane.

I absolutely recommend it.

Another thing to consider is I have a gold wedding band, and so I try to at least include some gold in all of my dress watches. The flagship using gold hands and indices makes the steel case less of a clash.
