Yeah a replacement movement is likely your only option while you're searching. I mean with the magic of 3D printing these days perhaps you'd be able to fabricate the part required for not much money.

It's a Lip Tallon like picrel. I feel like putting a quartz movement on it it's kind of an heressy, even though Lip sells similar watches with quartz movements.
The watch is of course not one I would wear on a daily basis and according yo my watchmaker, the less use old automatic movements get, the more fucked they get. On one hand, a quartz movement is the more practocal solution and woukd save me money and trouble in the long run. On the other hand, I feel like the watch won't be "real" anymore if it makes sense. Like putting a japanese engine on a Mustang.
The watch has a lot of sentimental value to me, so it's not about monetary value. I would love to wear that watch again.

>> No.17465630

>>17465625
It's totally understandable anon, but it's not like the watchmaker will keep or throw away the movement if he puts a quartz movement in, just keep the movement and then just hope that the part or full working movement you need comes up someday.

If money isn't an object here, I'm sure there must be a way of fabricating the part you need, but where and for how much I wouldn't know.

The gist of the story is that when the watchmaker called I wasn't at home and my wife didn't fully grasp what he said. Apparently, on top of the part that's broken the movement is really fucked since that watch has been sitting broken in a box for years (I stopped caring about watches years ago and only recently got back into them, thanks in a big part to this general). I will go talk to the watchmaker in person in about an hour and see what he has to say and what he proposes. I guess I could also contact Lip to see if they are able to provide a new movement... if they still make them. We're talking about a 70's era movement here.
I fear the quartz movement would make the watch feel less authentic to a degree, but then again it would be less trouble in the long run and the main selling point of these watches was never the horology, but Roger Tallon's design. And again, even though I like this watch and how unique and uncommon it looks, its main value for me is sentimental and what the watch represents, so no concerned about resale value or something like that. I want to keep this watch until I die, even if I will only wear it once in a blue moon.
I guess I'll decide once I talk to the watchmaker. I'll let you guys know then.
Thanks for the pointers, everybody.

I'm back from the watchmakers and the news are worse than expected.
For once, Lip was never distributed in my country so there's no supply of movements or spare parts, I'll have to contact an old school watchmaker in France and hope for the best.
Regarding the quartz movement, there's no guarantee that the date will exactly match the window. On top of that they'll have to change the hands. They can get something very similar but the watch would lose part of its iconic look, and don't like the idea.
I found a movement online that might be adapted to the watch, but it's 90€ and I have no guarantee it would perfectly match the case and date window, nor if it will be compatible with my watch's hands.
Add to that that we're still talking about a movement made in the 70's that who knows how much life still has in it, even if it's working properlu now, and once it breaks we're back to square one.
So I was almost set in switching the movement for a quartz but I'll have to think about it.

In your mind, do you rank watches by price or by brand?

For example if 6 guys sat at the table
1st has gold and ceramic rolex daytona
2nd patek aquanaut ss
3rd vc overseas chronograph in ss
4th ap ro in ss
5th has tudor bb58
6th has snowflake

is the cheapest watch from higher ranked manufacturer higher on food chain than more expensive model from the lower ranked manufacturer basically

I generally don't rank watches by price OR brand but by the watch itself. Something a pre-consolidation Cartier Santos-Dumont may not be that expensive, comparatively speaking, but it's definitely more interesting than anything on that list.

Of the guys at your table:

The Rolex is worn by an attorney who needs to be able to communicate to normie clients that he's successful. (He doesn't actually care about watches, but he likes to use the chrono to time his steaks when he's grilling.)

The Aquanaut is one of the lawyer's clients. Everyone at the table knows he's rich, but he' actually a LOT richer than anyone at the table knows.

The VC is worn by the Aquanaut wearer's friend, who knows he's not as rich as Aquanaut, but wants to appear as rich anyway.

The AP is worn by the attorney's friend (also an attorney) who's just gotten into watches recently and discovered Gerald Genta.

The Tudor is worn by the attorney's nephew. He just graduated from university and hasn't yet decided what he wants to do with his life. He'll probably spend a couple years travelling the globe before going to law school and working for his uncle.

The Snowflake is worn by one of the IT guys at the Aquanaut's company. He wasn't actually invited to dinner. He was sitting at the bar and he noticed his boss at a table, so he walked over to say hi. He failed to read the signals from everyone else and confused politeness with an invitation to sit down and join them.

Uncle seiko makes lots of after market bracelets. It really depends from watch to watch. If you want the end links (the links that sit on the springbars) to be flush with the case then you need to get specific ones for your case, you could gets something like a sharkmesh/milanese or an engineer bracelet that just has straight end links that leace a gap.
