For context I am 32, so is my wife, and our son is 3. Here is a photo of the three of us together in a family photo showing off the "dad shorts" in question. I put that in quotes because I myself am not quite sure.
I remember growing up as a child and teenager my dad used to wear some quite outdated short shorts that were literally just as short as my mom's shorts, and to me it always looked silly as hell. So in rebellion to not be anywhere close to his style I wore the baggiest, longest cargo, basketball, and boardshorts you could find. Those motherfuckers must've been around 12 to 15 inch inseam or some shit. They hit mid-calf are were almost the same length as my pants, just with a small piece of the calves showing.
Eventually though...I realized this looked kind of juvenile and just moved on to wearing pants all the time. The pants themselves were also the right fit. Not too baggy, but not too tight either. It looked a bit more mature.
Relatively recently though my wife told my I looked really nice in boxer-briefs, that I had really nice legs and thighs, and that I should definitely wear shorts out in public more. I told her I literally didn't own any shorts anymore for years, and she gave a "say what" type of reaction, and literally took me shopping for shorts the next day.
Since I hadn't worn shorts for years I just kind of took her advice on everything. She said shorts should not be super baggy or tight, but either relaxed or fitted. She also said that shorts should literally be "short" as the name says, and definitely hit a good few inches above the top of the knee or even mid-thigh is fine; but that they shouldn't go shorter beyond that or else you start to breach "70s short shorts territory." This all made perfect sense to me. The length was both comfortable and looked good. So we bought several pairs of shorts in the 5-7 inch inseam range for me.
However, once I posted the photo shown, a lot of my friends made fun of me for wearing "dad shorts."

The length is overly fine. Even among modern straight dudes, the trend is going a bit shorter, and that doesn't mean that it breaches the 70s territory. Without going into too much detail, the basic reason you want shorter is that it makes your legs look longer.

If I'm being hyper-analytical, I'd agree with other posters: part of the reason they look weird is that they're so baggy. If you can, replace them with something a bit less baggy, or simply do more squats. Doing so would, in a way, help the overall leg line. It'd also be nice if they're lighter but, again, splitting hairs.
