/btg/ - SHELL ENGINEERS BOOTS EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4/renovateur
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and don't wear them daily for too long

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.

IS there really any problem with Grant Stones? I keep hearing "CHYNA CHYNA CHYNA" but of all the boots to get shittalked, they have to be the ones that I never see blatant QC issues on. Them and Carmina.

Is my memory bad or did engineer style boots have an upsurge in popularity late 00's/early 2010's with more mainstream boot makers (e.g. Chippewa, Redwing, etc.) before vanishing into the realm of the more luxury side? It's a style I like, but seems like you can only find them if you're going to drop $700+.

Red Wing is having issues. They lost a ton of their older skilled workers during covid and they have discontinued lots of boots and their supply chain has suffered as a result. Also, quality control is in the gutter. They are still good boots, but until they get all their new hires up to speed, you might want to wait. They are releasing 4 new boots this year, though. not quite because you can get stuff like trickers that arent pnw tier build but pnw tier expensive
the divide is really gyw vs handwelt and stichdown but even then theres other things like leather thickness, stiffener materials, stitch density, number of stitches and a bunch of other shit but all of that is getting into the weeds
once you cross the $300 barrier and its not a pure fashion brand itll be hard to destroy the boots unless you spend 17hours a day walking 70 miles in hot acidic mud with no rotation or something silly

Question on toeboxes and celastic toes etc.:
I know stretchage in the toebox is basically impossible with something with the ubiquitous plastic stiffener, but what if you had proper all leather toecaps like with say Vass?
Is there some give in them or can they be made to give with a stretching device in the toe?

One of my fucking feet has the problem where the big toe gets pinched inwards by almond toes and I fucking hate it as the other foot has no damned problem.
Can full leather, no celastic. toes be stretched or am I SOL forever wearing stuff like the Alden Trubalance? I really really like the look of the relatively clunky Vass 3636 and Budapest lasts.

Red Wing is kind of like the Apple of the boot world. People buy them because they are Red Wings, and other people will compliment them because they know they are Red Wings. It's just a massive circle jerk. That said, there is nothing wrong with them, I just like their moc toes a lot better.

I got Red Wings because that's the most I can afford. That being said, I don't think I really need more. The quality of the materials and the construction are so good, I'm unsure a 600-800 boot would be worth it in terms of the jump in the ratio price/quality. Social Media idolizes poverty culture, because that is the kind of person who ends up becoming its main influencers. So whatever the poorest strata of society are doing, that's what ends up on Tiktok and Youtube, which becomes the new norm.

In my book:

Oxfords are to be worn with a suit only.
Suede oxfords, loafers, NST derbies, balmoral boots are more 'business casual' but definitely not for jeans.
PTBs, plain toe derbies (at least 4 eyelets), chelseas, chukkas, dress boots, boat shoes can be jeans territory but not these sloppy baggy fits.
Sneakers, service boots, engineers and the like are strictly casual territory. Jeans, chinos, maybe cords and that's it.

Are you one of those unfashionable office drone who think dark navy suit pairs well with tan oxford.

Tan oxford is ugly most of the time. The only reason it's popular is because it resonates with the noobs' bird brains that are attracted to shiny things.

Also, oxfords do not work that way. You can casualize them down how much you want, they are still suit or slacks+coat type of shoes.

The yellow stitching is characteristic of docs and not many makers use it. There's some cheap clones of martens with the stitching, but the makers usually replicate the popular models, and this ain't one of those.
The silhouette is basically a service boot and there's tons of them in all the price ranges. What's your budget?

When Viberg changed the game with their slim service boots, it subsequently get copied to death, even till this day.
