I just have a problem spending big amounts of money for some reason. I'm fairly indecisive and always "no no I shouldn't spend this on stuff I don't need" despite making decent money. $120 on an automatic watch that I just kinda like versus saving up for a few more months to buy a $800 watch just hits different and I really have to think about it. Like I recently realized over the last 6 months or so I think I've spent like $3000 on guns. I can sell those guns for a bit of a loss if I really needed to but damn thats a lot of money for toys.

>>17454422
Yeah its ironic when you spend $12 on an F91 and we all kinda laugh at it for being so good, but spending $120 on a Seiko 5 for example some people just want to call it a dumb shitter that nobody should have bought. Then they spam post $200,000 of watches at a jewelry store they don't own.

>> No.17454454

Guns are easier to justify when there's tangible benefits like reliability, accuracy, ergonomics and ease of use. When a $50 casio can tell time more accurately than a $5000 shitter, it's a harder sell. Not knocking anyone's love of luxury and semi-luxury watches, but from a utilitarian standpoint they can be very hard to justify.

>> No.17454458

>>17454454
Man you put it into words better than I did. Yeah a Casio is mass produced, doesn't have heritage, sapphire crystals, or precious metals but it'll tell time, look decent, and probably last a decade trouble free compared to a Grand Seiko that costs $9000 that just looks prettier and probably hand made in Japan. The choice on paper is obvious that the Casio is the better overall watch but I still want the GS. Maybe I'm too rational in wanting to pay off my mortgage in my 30s instead of buying really expensive toys and jewelry, but I also hate life so maybe I'm doing it wrong still.

What people are really buying is craftsmanship.

Not precision; a 5 dollar quartz watch is more precise than the most expensive mechanical watch.

Not design; You'll find that shitters for the mass-audience often have more interesting designs than expensive watches.

Not technology; again, a quartz is much more technologically advanced than the centuries-old system that is a mechanical movement.

Not longevity; as you said, a quartz watch will last a lifetime if you swap batteries every 5 years.

The only difference is how much time and skill goes into perfecting every component of a watch - manually. So you're buying a work of craftsmanship. Not because it's better, but because it's a work of art (allegedly).

So if craftsmanship is something you can appreciate but isn't worth your own money, go for the Casio.

Thanks! I actually have papers for the Longines, love the lugs on that one as well. The Bulova is a family watch, and is actually in better condition than it looks in the photo, however I desperately need to get a new strap for it. Tiny by modern standards but a great little formal evening watch.

I'm lucky enough to have a local watchmaker who's fairly inexpensive so I can keep these old autos serviced. They get a lot of wear. The Tissot bumper is the watch that gets the most comments out and about, but the case plating is very heavily worn, and I'm considering a heretical replate at some point.

Followed by prx and maybe the le locle. I also love that price range. They’re nice watches but I can wear them anywhere and anytime without worrying. I have a few breitling and nicer watches but most of mine are in the 500-2000 range.

Tissot is actually extremely reasonable compared other Swiss brands and especially Seiko which is its largest competitor from Japan.

Tissot generally gets recommended because they're affordable, usually have decent specs and finishing for the price and most of their designs are fairly basic and inoffensive making them both ideal first time watches and gifts for others.

Well the other possibility for not caring about reading an analogue watch is also just the simple fact people have less leisure time these days, it's kind a rare these days people just have a free couple of hours regularly, average people are usually working their fucking bollocks off just to afford the basic standard of living these days and that comes with a heavily regimented life, you can't get lost in leisure and loose track of time when your life is built around your calendar in Outlook and you're welded to your computer or phone trying to keep on top of every meeting and deadline contained within, take into account most people work overtime frequently and "spare" time involves just food shopping, cooking and having a wank before going to bed in order to live to see another of work, perhaps people are too attached to the clock to need a watch.

Heres a guy that has never seen a walmart greeter sitting on a stool with an oxygen in front of sliding doors in the winter because he frittered away his money on shit he couldn't afford. Bet he's enjoying those golden years.

I'm all for enjoying things and not living like a monk but that's just it, what other things does anon spend like an idiot on. Because "it's just a thing you can get other things" could apply to anything. So either anon is living on rice and beans and wearing garbage clothes, or he's extending this logic to everything else and not thinking about the future at all.

Let's look at a very conservative scenario and take that $333 a month and put it in a very conservative investment with 5% annual returns (we're going to assume that the 10.67% average annual return quoted by investment experts based on the period 1957 to present is a historical anomaly and we'll revert to the mean ROI from the dawn of recorded history except starting in the 1950s, as calculated by piketty)

Based on that extremely conservative investment, over 20 years that mentality costs you $143k, or based on the average from recent (last 75 years) history it costs you $277k

Now $277k is not enough to retire on but it's easily enough to leverage into something like a second property, just saying these kinds of things add up

Again I like nice things as much as the next guy but it's all about proportion, why wear a watch that's so expensive relative to your income when you'll have to drink shit wine and eat shit food and not go on vacation and wear shit clothes...

I don't disagree with anything you said, but when some people have no control and just shrug when someone points out they spent 5% of their income on jewelry its usually a symptom of how they spend money. Its usually getting that new car, getting guac every time they eat out, going to brunch every sunday, go on vacation and slap it on the credit card, buy that $10,000 living room set, and just finance their entire life but everyone else at work and their neighborhood has nice things so they too should get those nice things.

I agree, you don't have to live like a monk, but sometimes people just shouldn't be buying $4000 watches to impress strangers on /wt/ threads.

its a square watch incredibly similar to a cartier tank design. Don't get pedantic when theres irrefutable evidence of large watches being obnoxious and stupid.

Look at watches from decades ago, it was rare they were over 36mm. They also didn't have 15mm of bezel and a 4mm crown. They are timeless in design and still look good today. I fucking hate modern watches that have a 20mm dial and the case is 40mm. What are you even doing with your design department?

where did you get the idea I like large watches? if you want the truth it's a combination of things, big watches were seen as manly in the turn of the century because of arnold and his panerais, complicated watches pretty much have no choice to be large and if you want to show off how many perpetual calendars and gyrotourbillons you have, you're not coming in with a case size starting with "3", ever, and consumer expectations have changed somewhat in 50 years and even if it's just a run of the mill mass production mechanical chronograph, nobody is going to put up with the limitations of a landeron 51 when the other brands are putting 7750s or equivalent into their cases

I have a fully payed off house, car, and zero student loans. I own two watches from the so-called "Holy Trinity", and I have $250,000 in my brokerage account... I'm under 30. I don't know what other millennials are doing with their money, but it's piss easy to make a living in the tech industry these days.

>credit score is just paying your bills.
No, its how good of a goy you are at taking out loans and eventually paying them back. Ever notice whenever you apply for a loan it lowers your credit score? Ever notice paying off a loan lowers your credit score? Ever notice not going into debt lowers or can even eliminate your credit score? All it is is an indicator at how good you are at paying interest. Having an 800+ credit score means you're a good goy paying back interest timely. My credit is dropping as I put $20,000 towards my mortgage. Original schedule was to pay them $90k in interest over 30 years, instead I'll have paid them $9k over 8 years. After my mortgage is paid off I'm freezing my credit and after about 5 years (allegedly 18 months) it'll drop to 0 as an indeterminate insufficient data score.
