/btg/ - KANGAROO EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and don't wear them daily for too long

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.

yo boot thread
last thread just got me confused on what type of boots I wanted. I did the dumb thing and tried reading instead of just making dumb impulse buys and complaining about it later.

It's about boots and their lasts again. Iron Rangers fit me just fine, but someone said if I get another, more expensive pair of boots; I should look for the rounded toe clown shoe look only because it gives plenty of room for hte toes and this is far more important than fashion. Okay, so besides whites, vibergs, and some carmina lasts, anything else? I was originally planning on Viberg BCTs but so much anger erupted over it, I'm unsure.

Handwelt > Norvegese > Goodyear > Veldtschoen > Stitchdown

The whole point of these shoes is they last a long time and can be easily resoled. Stitchdown is not easy to resole.
Secondly, I really like welts with fudging. You can't have fudging on stitchdown, it just always looks flat and every stitchdown boot I've seen has a massive shelf of a welt too.

For the cleanest look, handwelt is best hands down. Properly handwelted shoes end up with essentially zero gap between the upper and the welt, you don't get that weird look from the side at all.
Norvegese looks nice if you want to add more stuff to the look, but only when the welt is trimmed very close to the shoe and the norvegese stitching. Few makers do this right.

These are all minor nitpicks honestly

>b) what style of boot do you even want? Super slim Euro dress boots, or chunky American work boots?
A little of each. I don't want to look like a prancing la la homo man when I go to work, but at the same time; I would like something that looks somewhat presentable with business and business casual clothes.
If I go into work looking like a million dollars where I work, I would just attract stares and/or get robbed.

Suede boots like this one
https://www.carminashoemaker.com/dress-boots-tobacco-suede-80179

Suede doesn't look too formal, it just looks good and is soft.
I have other Carmina boots with this exact suede color, it looks very good. Not extremely versatile because it's a light color though.

Also check these out
https://www.carminashoemaker.com/dress-boots-brown-elbamat-80179
https://www.carminashoemaker.com/work-boots-tan-karagrain-80791

Grain leather is like suede in that it doesn't look very formal so it's very versatile.

I'm partial to Truman's. Some PNW vibe but it's not exactly a PNW boot (originally from Pennsylvania).
The java color they have is also nice, if you want a darker boot/sleeker leather. The one I linked is built to order, so there would be some lead time on it.
If you want a black boot I wouldn't go for them. I don't like how it plays with the light-color stitching they choose to use.

White's Mule Packer may also be worth a look. Taller heel but pointed toe. Feels more western without being a cowboy boot.

Looks like a cheap leather sole, but that is normal enough. Mine obviously have the rubber pads that take most of the abrasion, but you can still see wear around the edges. The Fryes at left I've taken on rock trails and they do fine.

I'm more bothered by the lack of a channel cut to shield the stitching. Granted, loafers are for light wear/indoor use only but either way the whole sole looks like it's a deliberate cost-saving choice. They're expecting you to resole them with quality JRs within a year.

Mostly yes. They were baby's first real boot for me. I'm still amazed at the leather and the solid construction when I put them on. Can't imagine how White's, Nick's or other high end boots must feel. My only complaint is that I wanted the black cherry featherstone because it looked so amazing in the pics but in person the color is a bit underwhelming. It's a bit flat and lacks the undertones and patterns I've seen on the web. In retrospective, perhaps I should have gone for some shade of brown for my first boot that's not milsurp, but after being dead set on that specific model and that specific color for so long, didn't want to change my mind at the last minute.
Maybe I'll get some Iron Rangers in brown next, tgey were my second option and after seeing them in person they're growing on me.

I had regularly worn a pair of cemented suede chukkas for 8 years (I reglued them once myself though). Cemented can last as long as much of any sole would take to wear out.

Is that a problem?
I have 2030 boots, they have a bit of excess leather on the vamp but then again most shoes have excess leather there for me.
Any extra height would be a mistake.

For me the problem area is the middle of the foot on the outside area, the part that connects the heel to the widest point.
It's just not wide enough there, I don't know why that is and I've never had it on any other shoe.

I think this is a common problem, if you see photos of other people wearing Vibergs they will usually try to hide that area or you will see even people with normal feet having the leather protrude over the welt.

t. Did the same thing with Wolverine 1000 miles, and then realized the problems with buying boots at sub 100 dollars like the two not being from the same hide and the absurd creasing that comes with it.
Keep in mind, you can watch the outsoles of the rangers off and give them back. Tell the Red wing Store that you wore them for "a bit" indoors and they raelly didn't fit your feet. It's a dick move but it's better than having buyer's remorse.

I think you'll come to realize why Chippewa dropped out of the Heritage boot contest pretty early in due time if you keep wearing those boots, though.

This comes up every couple of years in these threads. It's parroted that if you put red laces on docs, specifically docs, and I think specifically cherry red/oxblood docs that you have killed a nog. Thing is tracing this shit back to the 70's or earlier and it all came from some ((journalist))) completely making shit up based on absolutely nothing at the time. However the lie has taken on its own life such that in the intervening years pseudo-skinheads thinking this gives them cred have used red laces. What a joke.
