Why is it so hard to find a decent day date auto? The best watch for the job is the rolex day date, but here are a few others-

Tissot visodate, various seiko 5s, that oris complication watch, seiko divers, that ugly tudor (vintage tudors are cool), hamilton khaki, breitling something, …

That was my first thought as well and I didn't give the Seiko any attention. Once I tried it on however, it just clicked. Great sizing, shape fits so snug onto my wrist and even the bezel is just right. I'm personally not a fan of black either but I think the bezel matches well with the grey sunburst dial. I'll wait until ones pops up for 800-900€.

Try a blue Sub, imo the universal colour choice you can't go wrong with.

LC tank that uses a Piaget 430P movement. Ultra thin movements are more prone to issues. This is just universally true. Tolerances are tighter and anything that isn’t absolutely necessary gets removed. There’s a reason only ~3 brands bother with ultra thin watches.

does anyone have a good heuristic about when you should buy a true luxury watch?

some background, i'm late 20s, married, about to have a newborn, more than half way paid off my mortgage in a nice area in Australia, $160,000 software engineer salary and I want a rolex datejust (approx. $12-14,000).

Is this an outrageous purchase? I'm in two minds because for one, it's < 10% of my annual salary on the other hand it's a lot of money for what is really a fashion accessory.

I think Piaget looks nicer, like a real watch, and the Richard Mille is cheating a bit by using an outside tool to wind it.

That being said at least the Mille watch is sturdy and they're making 100+ of them while the Piaget and Bulgari are more prototypes.

Citizen also does some cheap thins watches with their Stiletto line if you don't mind quartz.
