Nah. Some watches are immune to trends and will age nicely (most Rolex, JLC Reverso, most haute horlogerie stuff). Other watches, that were designed as fashion watches in the first place, have now ascended to icons so they're also immune to trends (I'm thinking of the Royal Oak or the Nautilus).
I always thought the original Speedmaster was in the first category, but because of the MoonSwatch I'm not so sure now...

Moonswatch sits separately imo, it's just a fun watch based on space travel while the original Speedmaster still has all the history and recognition. Everybody knows the Swatch is just a Swatch.

To expand on that shit, generally, watches are watches, but some of them can play specialized roles
- Dress watches are the only thing compatible with a tuxedo (assuming you're even gonna wear ANY watch with a tuxedo). They need to be classy and minimal with a leather strap, and above all, THIN
- Dive watches are defined by their higher water resistance compared to other shit and they usually have a rotating bezel with minute markers for tracking your oxygen
- Pilot watches used to have special anti-magnetic cases, luminous dials, and giant crowns so you could wind them with your gloves on. None of that is particularly relevant in modern airplanes though so you're more likely to see tachyometer shit or a rotating bezel with time zone markings
- Chrono watches are watches that are also stopwatches (chronometers). I don't know why it's a separate column there because there's a lot of overlap with pilot watches these days
- Field watches originate in the military, which is how men's wristwatches got popularized in the first place. I'm not as familiar with this kind but I've seen a lot of them that swap the hour and minute markings so you can use them to time the firing of an artillery barrage, which I'm sure everyone here does all the time

Today I went through my drawer and found a vostok that I used to wear a few years ago, just a regular amphibia.
The problem is the movement is kinda fucked, sometimes runs but eventually stops, than if I hit the case of the watch, sometimes comes back to life.
Obviously its a shitter and servicing the watch is not worth it, but at the same time I love the patina that it has and also has some sentimental value.
How can I save this thing? Service it? Buy a new one for an engine swap? Also I believe that vostok used to sell parts on meranom, but I have no idea how things are working because of the war.

>actual DST table that changes the time without the need of a signal
>has all the information on the screen instead of just dashes for alarm and battery level that can't be deciphered in the dark because the labels are on the glass
The GW-M5610U module has some advantages so if these are important to you go with it:

If you go by Hodinkee's "Talking Watches", I'd say Mayer and Sheeran are the biggest enthusiasts; baseball player Howie Kendrick has a really good collection of vintage tool watches like a 1960s Heuer and Breitling, and would get stuff off eBay that is not even that expensive. Fred Savage seemed pretty into collecting as well.

It'd be cool to have some feedback. Pic related is my poorfag collection. The casio I bought used and the seiko and citizen were gifts.

I read a lot of advice given online that you should avoid buying cheap watches and save up for the next tier of watches. This makes sense in some ways but it also really hammers home that these things are flashy consumerist fetishes, where there are tiers and boxes to be ticked. I like the idea that you get a watch simply because you like it, regardless of the price. many watches from the big brands are as ugly as sin to me. And just looking for whatever watch from them you find the least ugly and possesses the most "value" seems ridiculous.

However, on the flip side, part of the irrational romanticism of these things is that you can potentially have them for decades and pass them onto your children, which is more easily achieved with higher quality watches.

What are you all's thoughts? I'd like to get a watch to commemorate finishing grad school in year and change from now, and have my eye on a Citizen NB1060-12L, but I'm wondering if I'd be better off getting something "better" like a Sinn or Oris.

I'm also thinking of getting an Orient bambino but wondering if it'd be worth it

>> No.17427261

>>17427236
your children will probably not care about your watches at all. The saving up part is true in a sense, I mean why would you buy 8 watches that are sort of what you like for a total of 4k, if you could have the watch you really like for that budget? Now, if you truly like the watch than you'll be happy with it, no matter the price. I absolutely adore my $50 no name quartz shitter, but I also like my more expensive watches very much.

>I read a lot of advice given online that you should avoid buying cheap watches and save up for the next tier of watches.
It's more about reminding you to slow down with buying watches, no matter the budget. Don't buy 3 watches on a whim per year, save for one good one. If you jump in it too enthusiastically you end up with a bunch of watches that are equal to one really good watch.

I've been interested in watches for about 15ish years. My collection goes from Casio to modern Jaeger-LeCoultre. I might have some helpful insight as I have bought (and sold) many foolish watches.
>I read a lot of advice given online that you should avoid buying cheap watches and save up for the next tier of watches.
Good advice generally speaking.
>it also really hammers home that these things are flashy consumerist fetishes, where there are tiers and boxes to be ticked
Sort of. As opposed to seeing them as boxes to tick, I see these "tiers" and "boxes" as helpful rules of thumb so that people who may not be very knowledgeable about watches don't get screwed by the many hucksters in the industry. There is certainly fetishism over Rolex and Patek but it seems to be cooling with the market.
>I like the idea that you get a watch simply because you like it
Great. You should do this within reason. People get in trouble because they impulse buy stuff, then years later they're back here posting about how they have 30 worthless microbrands and talking about how they wished they had just bought something better initially.
>many watches from the big brands are as ugly as sin to me.
Sure. Lots of big manufacturers are going through a bit of a design slump. Omega, TAG, Rolex, AP, Vacheron, even Cartier who is normally a design power house have all been somewhat boring recently.
>I'd like to get a watch to commemorate finishing grad school in year and change from now, and have my eye on a Citizen NB1060-12L, but I'm wondering if I'd be better off getting something "better" like a Sinn or Oris.
Sinn is a good brand. Oris is improving. If that's your price range, I'd go with a Sinn or Nomos if you're want serious horological chops with decoration and highly integrated vertical manufacturing. Nothing wrong with Casio, but I would treat myself on a grad watch because you will probably have it forever.

I honestly think they're really cool. Really purpose built watches and have a lot of history. The 300t is also cheaper and has a ridiculous amount of water resistance (1200m or something) but isn't COSC certified. I always liked the no decompression stop part of the rotating bezel too. Something from Oris would be around the same price iirc but they don't have the same vibe.
