That watch is so dull it could be used to induce coma. It has absolutely no personality, which is why watch YouTubers love it because neither do they. Some Vapid cunt can just read the specs and say how shiny is it. the Tissot Gentlemen is the peak Reddit "superior consumer" watch.

Are there any companies today that make watches like picrel (Omega ultra thin) for <$1000? I really like the simple look of the dial and how the small rectangular shape as well. my wrists are kind of thin but not wristlet tier so I thought a smaller dial would not extenuate that.

I want to buy an analog watch as an accessory for nights out. But, I've never cared for watches (Or fashion) until recently, so I have no taste for it and have a few doubts.
Does the strap material and color have to match what I'm wearing, or is it reasonable for any watch to match most situations?
I know of the size of wrist vs size of watch, what else can't be left to personal taste?
Are all designer-brand watches (Diesel, Tommy Hilfiger, Armani, Calvin Klein) overpriced crap?

Nope. This kind of "egg timer" watch has been a dream of mine for a while, but I've never seen any company make one.

I think a lot of it is down to the fear of cheap bomb timers. There were these old memo park parking timers that essentially got removed from the market because the IRA were using them or some shit.

A diver bezel is almost as good, you just have to check on it every so often so you know how much time has passed. Fuck the unidirectional shit on most watches though. Absolutely retarded, just makes it more annoying to use for no good reason.

Digital timers (including digital watches with alarms, such as... the obvious) have been everywhere for decades now so I'm not sure this still applies, but maybe the demand just isn't there

if you look into what Zaratsu polishing is, you might not think it's quite so special as marketing implies, but on the other hand; the actual features of that watch are top-notch and it's a really nice all-rounder suitable for most any occasion so for your first 'serious' watch, you aren't going wrong

just so you know, though, once you buy this you will fall in love with quality craftsmanship and end up spending thousands buying more and more interesting pieces, constantly filling your waking life and dreams with shiny little nonsense machines and coming back to this thread for MOAR so yeah, maybe just get a fitbit

also; solar is great but over winter you will need to pop out every time there's a bright day and give it those 5 minutes of sun, though i've found that 20 minutes with a UV flashlight will also do the trick

The Germans mainly make three types of watches very well; tool/pilot, Bauhaus and the traditional marine watches.
They tend to be a bit more rough around the edges, simplistic and don't have the sleek elegance of the swiss.
It can also be a bit of an acquired taste for the German quirkiness in some cases.
Most cheap brands use same or similar off the shelf movements or modify them in the upper price ranges. Typically you have to go above 5k to find in-house movements, unless you shop vintage of course.

Sinn make some of the coolest and most unique tool watches in my opinion, at an affordable price. Use a few meme features normal people don't need that drives up price and service cost. Helmut Sinn was himself a fighter pilot in WW2.

Nomos get hate for being leftist faggots, but I can't hate on their designs even though I'm not a fan of Bauhaus. They also make traditional watches for us wristlets that don't like +40mm dinner plates that the Germans seems to be fond of. May also be an exception for cheapish in-house movements, not sure where they start at.

Stowa, Laco and Hanhart mainly live off their legacy as makers of WW2 watches, uses off the shelf movements and sadly aren't real watch makers anymore. Affordable and good looking though.

Glashütte Original, the poor man's Lange, is a high end vertically integrated manufacturer, (almost) on par with JLC, although, certainly not as accomplished.
They have some pretty cool designs. You can usually find early 2000s designs at a decent price on chrono24.

>> No.17420317

the more watches I try on the more I realize I have absolutely no desire for anything above 40mm. I grew up with a vintage 34mm timex marlin passed to me from my grandfather, and then went into G-Shock, then through seiko/rolex. I've tried on virtually every watch size, gone to a lot of collectors meetings. I tried on panerai's, omegas, cartier, tudor, rolex, patek, ball, virtually every watch brand under the sun, and no matter what I still prefer a good 34-38mm watch. I don't know how companies can offer such insanely large watches. They're bulky, garish, uncomfortable, and ugly.

It's kind of funny. They have modernist Bauhaus designs and the design department is located in the degenerate hell hole known as Berlin. Yet, they're the vanguard of German watch making. Independent and not owned by a conglomerate, unlike A Lange and Glashütte Original. Developed their own complete movements.

>In 2013, Nomos debuted a line of calibres called the DUW line – short for Deutsche Uhrenwekre. All of this led up to the release of a proprietary swing system in 2014. This didn’t happen all at once. The new swing system had been in development since 2007, and had required a partnership with TU Dresden, as well as an investment of 12 million euros.

>The main challenge of producing a swing system is that it requires incredible skill and precision. The pallet, escape wheel, and balance, along with the other parts, have to be produced with micrometer-level precision. Not only do they have to be produced with this level of precision, but they have to work in tandem. Uwe Ahrendt, the general manager who oversaw the process and is now CEO, compared the process of producing a new swing system to landing on the moon.

>This is the reason most watch manufacturers either buy someone else’s movement, or produce an in-house movement based on an existing movement. Simply put, engineering a new swing system from scratch is both too expensive and too demanding a task for most watch manufacturers to afford. To this day, only a handful of highly-skilled Nomos watchmakers are qualified to manufacture them. Hence the continued dominance of Swiss calibres like ETA. Much like the moon landing was a “giant leap for mankind”, producing an in-house swing system was a giant leap for Nomos. It allowed them to create their own watches entirely from scratch, without relying on any other firms to produce their parts.
