My dad told me that in his high school in the early '80s whether you smoked or not pretty much determined who you hung out with and whether you were being invited to parties and ultimately what your social life as a high schooler would be like. If you smoked, you'd hang around with other kids who smoked and those were the cool kids who were partying and drinking and (I presume) getting laid. If you didn't smoke, you could choose between the chess club and mathletes.

the "tests" are not debatable, there are multiple national cohort studies linking smoking to cancer. there are countries in which tobacco companies have to put ridiculously sized stickers on the packages, including gruesome pics. if the tobacco lobby had any leg to stand on, they would have sued against that.

I happen to think smoking is effay as fuck, it's charismatic and can really give a nice ambience. Whoever has told you or given you the impression that evidence of smoking as the single most common carcinogen is not absolute without a smear of fucking doubt is an idiot however. Reads like a drop-out that throws around "study" and "controlled" wording without knowing what the fuck they mean. Controlled studies on smoking tobacco as a significant carcinogenic concluded over 70 years ago (Wynder and Graham come to mind) and modern studies are still reporting that no matter the difference in external factors, tobacco smoking across sex and unequivocally in rates presents as a serious carcinogenic.
