/btg/ - LACE TO TOE EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and don't wear them daily for too long

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.

in terms of the leather, i do prefer the domane leather on the boss because CXL is CXL. in terms of the little details, JL has finer and higher SPI stitching through, but it lacks the visually interesting quad V stitch the wescos has. Comfort wise they're about the same, with the exception of the celastic toe in the JL

Boots newfag here, going to rapid fire some questions:

If I want a similar look to these >Thursdays, what should I be looking/asking for? Like how do I describe that boot so a proper company knows what I want?

Why are some leathers matte looking (like the pic) while others are shiny? How do I maintain the "matte" vs "shiny" with polish or lotion or whatever?

I'm looking at boots in the $500-700 range. What should I be looking for? Is a brand like Nick's or Whites good? I read a r*ddit sticky and was recommended those.

Thank you /btg/

Engineerfags, how do the John Lofgrens compare to the Wesco Mister Lous? I have a pair of Wescos that I love which are a very comfortable fit, but I'm more attracted to the aesthetic of the perfectly rounded toe of the JL. Someone in the last thread said that he hates his JLs because they're terrible to get on and the celastic toe is uncomfortable. Do other people have this same experience?

I own a pair of their 310s. I love sprung boxy toes, but it isn't for everybody. That being said, it is one of my top 3 favorite pairs that I own alongside my Mister Lous and Whites 350 cruisers. Vibergs are undoubtedly great boots despite what mega autists on these generals will say. Of course theres always going to be people who say there's a "better" boot, but in the big picture Vibergs are the endgame for a lot of people who love leather boots. They realistically are only for casual/dress wear, but they work perfectly for that purpose. They have a large selection of relatively high quality leather for each of their lasts, and the amount of detail put into the stitching puts them slightly ahead of other well-known companies like Redwing and Whites. Nowadays if you want a top-shelf boot you'll have for life, you will have to accept spending at least $600-800.

Consider White's Farmer/Rancher boot. The logger heel pushes your balance forward so you (weirdly enough) walk more on the ball of your foot than your heel. Very comfy and the arch support does work.
Logger heel is wide too so you aren't losing out on stability.

Then I highly advocate for you to get some bergs. That zulu leather is horrendous though. You'd be better off getting something more well-rounded like a standard chromexcel or horsebutt. The really wild leathers they offer are going to be very niche and will only work so well for specific outfits, whereas a standard brown or black chromexcel or horsebutt leather will work with the majority of outfits, and in my opinion form more beautiful patinas compared to something that straight up looks like reptile skin

Whites and Nicks make good boots but they are chunky and fat
Viberg or Alden (both more expensive) make boots that look more like those Thursdays
Other options are C&J or Carmina and within your price range.

Pic related, it's C&J's homepage right now.

Matte leathers go by different names, it could be roughout or waxed suede or roughout suede or waxy commander, depends on the brand.
But not all smooth leathers have to be shiny, I have boots in brown CXL and they are not shiny. CXL is not really made for shining anyway.

Excess length is not a sign of a bad fit.
If it flexes at the right point, it's not uncomfortable and there is no heel slip, it's probably the right size. If the facings almost close (but not touching) on an oxford, that's also a great fit but that's almost impossible to get right on a ready to wear shoe.

>so they aren't rough against the tops and sides of your feet?
Good boots will often have a cow or calfskin liner. There's good boots that won't, and for those you'll want good wool socks.
But you want merino wool socks anyway. A whole laundry list of benefits, and they're simply more durable than anything else.

>the price
I have also literally never had to throw these socks away during three years of bartending. The usual polyester/nylon/cotton socks get holes way too fast. These don't.

I'm not a chukka expert but I do like them. Here's what I look for
>does it have a shank?
>does it have a liner or a celastic toe?
>how secure do you need to be?
>how clean/presentable do you need it to be?

Clarks need to be mentioned because they're the most accessible chukka brand, and I don't recommend them. No shank so the heel is focusing pressure in a line into your foot. Lots of chukkas are built similarly and I hate it. If you have a heel, you need a shank.
Liner and/or celastic toe keep the shape together, more professional, but I think unlined, unstructured chukkas have more soul. It's a light casual boot. Alden and Meermin have good options here.
Similarly, I think two eyelet builds have more soul, and it's perfectly secure if your fit is good. But three eyelets mean you can cinch it down secure on your ankle if the last isn't perfect for your foot.
And lastly, I love the look of crepe soles, especially undyed crepe, but it really does pick of dirt something horrible. Leather soles are fine, but I'm not aware of a leather sole, stitchdown construction, unlined chukka. I would love it if I knew who sold one, otherwise I'll have to go custom eventually.
So you'll have to accept the sturdier, less light & casual goodyear welt or similar, unless you want crepe.

It's not just height, anon. Tall and slim heels require you to be tall and slim and have a sleek fit.
Wider, squarer heels are for working men.

Also unironically, there is a sweet spot on heel height and arch support that makes a boot more comfortable. a 1 3/8" heel is called a walking heel in the southwest. Taller than that is a riding heel. Lower than that is a formal heel. It depends on your needs.

Anything with a high heel, high arch is balancing the body weight. Once you start lowering a heel, you start shifting body weight backwards, and that’s where you can start to get fatigue and pressure on the lower back, knees, and your quads and other muscles in your legs.

That isn't to say that taller = better, since more height means higher center of gravity, means less stability.
Riding boots can get away with taller heels because you're in a saddle. The taller heel helps keep the stirrup from slipping away, and that matters more than lost stability.
Look at the Logger heels that White's uses. It's at least 1/4" to 1/2" taller than what men usually wear, but it isn't so tall or narrow that you're losing stability.

Skolyx and Skoak both have their own brands but they're made in Spain

There's a Swedish tannery called Tarnsjo that supposedly makes pretty comfy soft grain leathers.
Bonafe can make shoes out of them but I am guessing only if you ask Skoak (I guess Skoak sources the leather for old Enzo)

You can get a cheaper boot that looks similar, yes. What you're paying $700 for is an excellent last and solid leather internals which makes the shoe far and away more supportive and stable.
Any monkey can fill a boot with foam, which is comfy, sure, but that breaks down over time and the constant squish means less stability on your feet. You are constantly re-breaking in the boot.

My experience with White's is this: I paid $700, and now I no longer want to wear my $300 boots because the chunky White's monster is far and away the most comfortable boot I have. And the most durable.
Bad in airports due to all the lacing but just wonderful otherwise.

tl;dr I use Bick 4 for conditioner cream. The stuff works great and I've never had it overcondition anything. Depending on what you need, you may want Redwing shoe cream.

Take note, there's leather polish and leather conditioner. Conditioner 'conditions' the boots by adding oil into the porous leather, polish protects the boots with an exterior layer of wax. Conditioner can come as a cream which is a wax/oil compound, or as a liquid such as mink oil. polish like yours can have beeswax and oil inside of it, which should let the oil soak in while the wax stays on top.

On top of this, saddle soap 'cleans' the leather, and pulls oil and anything else out.

Be warned, all conditioners that are actually conditioning darken the leather to some extent. Depending on the oil, it can either stay darkened or go back to its original color depending on the compound. Mink oil is notorious for darkening leather but being one of the best conditioners you can use. Bick 4 darkens but then slowly returns it to normal as the compound evaporates, usually within a day. The best cream I've found that does not darken leather is Redwing Shoe Cream

Conditioner every 6 months for all shoes and boots. There's even suede conditioner in spray form (with color). For suede you should also apply waterproofing spray every 6 months.

For smooth leathers that you want to keep looking sharp, shoe cream with color every now and then to cover up any damage. You can brush this to remove excess cream and polish a little bit.
Maybe do not do this if you want your boots to look 'distressed' (yikes).

For smooth leathers on formal, dressy shoes, apply wax (with or without color) to make them shine a lot. Apply one or two layers to the whole shoe then buff it with a slightly damp cloth. On areas that do not flex (toe cap, heel) you can apply many layers and then buff over and over again until it looks like a mirror.

Obviously you can see why suede is so good. It looks nice, it's not very formal, it's very soft and comfy, it only needs a bit of spraying every few months and maybe some brushing now and then.
Just be a little careful not to drop food on it, otherwise you have to clean it with suede shampoo.

I had a pair from 2010 to 2019. I replaced them with an "identical" pair (albeit beeswax instead of brown leather) and the fit was off and I'm about to throw them away. Both were daily boots for me.

I have no idea what they've done to make the soles less durable and why the fit is different but I'm now looking for something similar by a different company.

One thing I can say is that even though the fit wasn't as good in the second pair as the first, it was still really good for me. I have wide feet so it was a real bonus to be able to find that level of comfort.

If you're interest in the soles, I walk with a slight angle when my my foot hits the ground. What this means is the heel wears on the outer edge and once worn beyond a certain point means it becomes uncomfortable to even stand in them because my weight is pressing down and angling my feet.

As others said, the crepe sole picks up dirt like crazy and can look pretty hideous. They can clean up nicely, but it's a fools errand.

In short, great boots, deserving of the reputation, but from experience not what they used to be. They have a newer version of the boot which has some differences and I'm interested in trying it, but I'm put off by the performance of the current "classics".

If anybody has experience with the new ones I'm interested to know how they are. I'm kind of tempted to get sand suede ones as a summer boot only, but they're done as a daily boot for me now.

In my opinion, the sleekest and best looking ones are the SLP rangers. Sadly they are out of production, and the few used pairs you can find around are too expensive imo. Some cheaper (and shorter) lookalikes are Ofanto Matera boots, pic rel. Cemented construction, but they're not working boots supposed to last decades, they are made in Italy, and for the price (150 eur) they look okay. I actually considered buying them myself, might do it in the future. Personally I own a pair of Shoepassion, some anon posted their picture somewhere earlier in the thread.
