/btg/ - ENGINEERS EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and don't wear them daily for too long

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.

If you have a pair of derbies or boots in one last, can you somehow figure out if the instep would be correct in a pair of oxfords on the same last?

I posted these some days ago, these are not my boots I found them on the internet, made by Enzo Bonafe.
You can tell it's a Bonafe by the characteristic giant welt when you ask for a storm welt or norvegese construction.
I own Bonafe boots with just regular 270 welt and it's already big enough, I love the look but I don't think it should be any bigger.

Probably 0.5 if you plan to use thick socks.

That is garbage. Watch some videos on how to wash and condition shoes.
Don't buy expensive shoe care products. An ordinary bar of soap instead of saddle soap is ok. Any softer neutral colored shoe wax from a mall is fine for conditioning and polishing. Smell it and buy the one that smells pleasant, e.g. Salton.
Before final polish spray cold water on the shoe or on the brush. It will give you almost spit-shine.

big mistake
Water draws substances into the leather, because it's porous. The soap may have drew some of it out, but the opposite could be true: It just drew it deeper into the material
The answer is to dab as much off as possible, use some baking soda overnight on the remaining spots, vacuum it up in the morning and just keeping doing that until the spots are gone. Gasoline also evaporates, so continue until you can't smell it, and then saddle soap + condition.

I bought new "waterproof" winter boots a few months ago and one of the boots is already getting damp after a few minutes of walking in the snow. How do I choose good winter boots and avoid repeating my mistake?

Nah bro I can't wear boots outside of winter. Sometimes I don't even wear boots because I find it really hard to drive in them. Conditioning them with sapphir lotion did soften the leather though.

That's just your foot shifting from improper fit. Do you have insoles? Are they tied to lock your ankles securely? As for the weather, just wear them with wool socks. Your feet will acclimate, unless you live in a hot and humid area. If so, change to jungle boots.

Any UK fags got any recommendations for homegrown boots for all round use (work, casual, proper walking). Tricker's are on my radar but maybe for a special occasion. So far I've only found William Lennon & Co.

Tl;dr:
I want...
> British Boots
> 270° Goodyear or 360° Goodyear welt
> At least mini-lug or low profile full lug
> £150-£300 price range
> Leather toe capped (I proper bum the iron ranger look)
> Dark colours

William Lennons for premium, solovair for budget.
I'm going to the William lennon factory when they open up in the new year for a fitting, you can pick and choose soles and leathers from different boots as they are all made to order anyway.

>> No.17412803

>>17412799
No, it's brass stitching.
Goodyear isnt be all and end all, the brass stitching I'd quality and you can get it resolved at their shop, I doubt timpsons can do it as it's a rare method.

>> No.17412808

>>17412799
Also yeah I'll let you know, I'll post it in the next boot thread when I get it done.
I don't know yet but I don't mind dropping a lot of money on them.
I believe to simply interchange the leather and soles there is little or no charge, the charges only come in when you use not standard leathers or if you have fucked up feet and need them properly measured.
Also to expand on the brass stitching, you can see how thick the soles are, these boots will easily last 2-3 years with heavy use on the soles.

I have insoles because I'm between sizes and they didn't have halves. They still fit just right though, it's just that the leather around the heel is too tough still.

Anybody have any experience with John Lofgren engineers? I have a pair of Mister Lous, but the really dramatic narrow sprung tow is not so much for me and I prefer the more balanced-looking toe of the JLs. Are they worth the money, or do they hold up in quality compared to a pair of Mister Lous? Also, whats the sizing difference between the two boots? My 11E Mister Lous fit perfectly, would an 11D work well with the JLs?

i have a pair of wesco boss and a pair of JL engineers

i hate the JL. the pulling on/wearing experience is terrible. they made the throat super unergonomic and without a pull loop you have nowhere to pull on. i have to spend almost a minute shimmying my foot into the JL with both hands and a long shoehorn, compared to the single hand pull loop the boss does

Shape and profile wise i think the JL is slightly more attractive (and more commented on by passerbys), but the celastic in the JL toe rubs my top knuckles in a bad way, especially after getting used to the softer, leather structured toe on the boss
