/btg/ - EG GALWAY EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and don't wear them daily for too long

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.

My favorite clone of the Galway is the one made by Enzo Bonafe
But because a specific US retailer asked for the design first and EB didn't think of it on their own, he has exclusivity and you have to place your MTOs for it through him.

Kinda weird considering it's a clone but I suspect old Enzo didn't know

Carmina also makes a clone and it is very affordable.
Their peak goes up instead of down

Shell is like 1200€ for MTO.
Normal leathers/suede should be like 600€ for MTO.

The most affordable Galway clone probably comes from TLB
It's 500€ in RTW or less than 600€ for an MTO.
Quality and finishing are superior to Carmina. You get a real leather heel stiffener and all that.

As always with TLB, the problem is the lack of options. Can't do shell. There's no option to add eyelets (biggest problem imo). No option for fancy soles like Ridgeway, it's either dainite or full on commando. Even the rounded last is pretty pointy and dressy.

This is a picture of my Bonafe color 8 shell jumpers

The left boot is more representative of the color they have normally, although I find it very hard to photograph their actual color. It looks different depending on the light, but usually it's a dark brown/burgundy.

They are probably my best fitting shoes, but they are too flashy to wear outside of the office. Maybe after a few months once they've lost their shine.

I bought the boot trees as a novelty, I've never had boot trees before. I probably wouldn't buy them again.

>might explain why those go on sale very often nowadays
That's a general trend for dress/fashion boot companies. Frye has had a permanent half-off sale for years now.
They over produce because they have/had physical stores with inventories to maintain, and/or never know when the business/fashion world will have a sudden spike in interest for a certain style.
These regular sales allow them to shift static inventory. It's part of the model. All they're doing is giving up their margin in order to save on storage costs.

It is unironically why the online-only small inventory or batch production or MTO model took off, and why those brands typically only have annual sales (if anything) instead of quarterly sales.

The footbed on the left boot of the original pair I ordered basically sunk into nothing. I emailed them and they were super helpful and replaced them completely.

My 2030 Vibergs also have an issue with the left boot where it feels like I’m standing on the welt around the instep/waist. The right boot doesn’t have this issue. Either way both of my Vibergs are some of the least comfortable boots in my collection (stitchdown is dogshit compared to gyw) so I might just sell them and put that money towards other boots.

Themoplastic celastic is what mass production allows.
Traditionally, and still on costlier bespoke footwear today, toe caps and heel counters were made out of stiffened leather, not this plastic crap which decays over time and crumbles due to reaction to sweat.
I think Vass are the only "mass produced" non bespoke shoe brand that doesn't use celastic and uses leather, which as one of you mentioned stretches. Celastic doesn't stretch, it cracks. I don't know the state of Vass today, but at least a couple of yearsago when I went there it was still proper stiffened leather.

A suede indy is one of my grail boots.
I live in Europe.

I found a European store that stocks pic related.
It has a commando sole (I do not buy or accept dainite) - so that's good.
They have only two boots left, one of the two is exactly my correct size.
I would maybe change to black laces, that's not an issue.

The issue is, the store is Bri'ish.
They say that EU shipping is exactly the same as before Brexit, they call it "seamless". I do not buy that.
