JLC has no "style", no distinctive design elements. Their design language is all over the place. Reverso, Polaris, Master and Master Control lines all have different case shapes, lugs, indices and hands.

It will probably be discontinued soon enough. I don't think it's a good seller. Someone probably convinced one of the Richemont execs to tell JLC to make a sports watch.
JLC simply can't do it. They've tried so many times to create a sports watch line. They've tried over and over again (Master Compressor, Navy SEALs, Polaris) to create a distinctive design language.

The simple fact is that JLC buyers don't buy JLCs for sports watches, they buy elegant casual or dress pieces.

>> No.17383795

to be fair there are only so many good stainless steel sports watches for a reason, and most of them were designed by the same guy. it took vacheron 2 decades to get the overseas right and that was with the 222 already existing as their starting point, JLC really don’t have much to work with in the first place and already go too far out of their element by trying too hard to be sporty in a very dated fashion.

>JLC really don’t have much to work with in the first place and already go too far out of their element by trying too hard to be sporty in a very dated fashion.
This is a good point. They want to look vintage but they're creating most of the design cues for the line out of whole cloth. The E859 Memovox Polaris that inspired the line was only made for a very brief time.

I think JLC would be better served making a more casual line of watches instead of trying to make sports watches that compete with brands that already have decades of experience in the segment.

Say, they use the Master line as a starting point, add thicker leather straps, brushed surfaces instead of all high polish, maybe add some fun dial colors, maybe use their complications in a more light-hearted way. They can make their own thing instead of making something where people immediately ask..."Why doesn't this 'diver' have a screwdown crown?"

Ive been wanting to buy a Green watch for a while now and cant decide between these two. Older model Seiko 5 or the Tissot PRX.
Since my wrist is small, id likley go with the 35mm PRX instead of the 40mm pictured here. I dont really mind that its a quarts, I sort of want a quarts anyway, just not sure if I want to pay so much for one. Its sleek and elegant in a way, but something about the Seiko keeps me coming back. Does anyone have any recommendations on some other Green dials I should consider? i’ve already tried the overseas IRL, it fits me well. my only concerns are:
- the movement lacks hacking seconds and an instant date change, and i can’t help but be paranoid that vacheron will eventually update it with those features the way patek did with the nautilus
- the blue dial has a shocking amount of unit variance and i would have to handpick a unit with just the right depth, hue and sunburst to be satisfied, which also means buying it from the boutique is not an option for me even ignoring the waiting list

beyond that though, it is the most classical and visually cohesive of the haute horologie sports watches which i find super appealing. i am just trying to make sure there isn’t some obscure contrarian option i haven’t considered yet.

>> No.17384989

And why would you care about that? I mean yeah you spend a lot of money on this watch. Maybe even a bit too much for my liking but it definitely will hold it’s value overtime regardless of the updates.
I mean if you like it, just do it. Otherwise as a poor man’s rolex owner I wholeheartedly recommend Tudor Royal so you can have something nice while waiting for the perfect moment to buy your dream thing. And it doesn’t cost an arm and the leg

I just really like Overseas and it wouldn’t bother me if I had Vacheron money to drop into it. I don’t like anything Lange, but Czapek is fucking class. Never had a chance to look at one in person. What’s your opinion on it?

>> No.17384994

>>17384992
i have not had the chance to handle the czapek in person either and i don’t even think there are any czapek ADs where i live. it’s a very unorthodox and maybe even too modernistic take on the haute sports watch. the movement is really very unusual looking and the bracelet manages to be mechanically the same as the nautilus one but also completely different and matching the silhouette of the case. it pushes into maybe too sleek for my taste, but it’s still a very attractive watch in my opinion. my favorite variant is probably the blue terre adelie, too bad it was limited.

the movement is very beautiful, just as beautiful as the vacheron if not more. the rest of the watch is, well, stereotypically lange. large flat case with no attempt made at being lithe or sleek, very stark and minimal adornments, large date window and for symmetry an additional unnecessary day window. you either like this design language or you don’t, it’s definitely very utilitarian and nothing like the swiss. i guess what i like most about it is that it really looks like a lange saxonia adopted into a sports watch, rather than the genta watches where the design language of the watch has virtually nothing in common with the brand’s other watches (cough cough patek)

the problem with it is that fundamentally speaking it’s not actually an integrated bracelet watch (the bracelet on earlier units was removable but this was changed presumably to make it fall under the label) and the bracelet itself is just awkward. very busy compared to the simplicity and elegance of the overseas or something like the royal oak, almost like a rolex jubilee with the links upsized. the dial is also, from an aesthetic standpoint, kind of dull. the swiss trinity, the antartique, even something like the moser steamliner, all have a lot of very complex and pretty stuff going on with their dials, but apparently all lange did was a flat color with some finishing differences in different sections. i have the same problem with the JLC no date polaris. and the fact that it’s a relationship piece at lange boutiques with comical gray prices really doesn’t help.

>I do like the slab aesthetics. Manly and not gay.
i think there's a way to pull that off without coming off as excessively loud and unnuanced, but i'm sure anyone who tries that will be branded a genta wannabe so it will never happen. also something about hexagonal screws against an octagonal bezel bothers me, i know why it's done but that doesn't mean i have to like it.

>Have you looked into Zenith Defy?
i have, and i have the same issues with it that I do the GP laureato - it really doesn't do anything very interesting. case of an overseas, bezel of a rounded RO, bracelet of a nautilus, and i don't really like any of the dial options either. never been a fan of skeleton dials, so i would probably go for a skyline if i had to choose, and i'm really confused by the point of the plusses throughout the dial (aside from copying the RO, again) and the asymmetrical small seconds (which weirdly enough reminds me of the 2300V 37mm overseas).

Idk man… If I were you I’d go for Overseas. You can of course try researching microbrands but do you want to waste your life on that?

yeah i have no interest in legit microbrands, i find that stuff (like that yema shit that keeps getting posted here, yuck) really embarrassing. i was more interested in whether or not i was missing anything from the smaller haute brands like czapek and moser.

waiting until W&W 2023 is what i’m stuck considering at the moment, but the thing is even if i do, boutique waitlists here for a blue 4500V are still years long because there are simply too many rich people where i live, and if i want to wait for an updated 4500V to appear on the gray market i would be looking at maybe 3-6 months after release (and who knows when that will be). in other words i could end up looking at a full year before i get my goddamn watch which is really gay, and i would be even more annoyed if i waited until april and literally nothing happened. it’s a very first world problem but it bothers me regardless.

This is one of my major complaints as well. They have all these amazing vintage case shapes that would look fantastic today but they don't make good use of them. I don't want exact repros of old watches in 35mm cases but i would love to see them take those shapes and apply modern gs hand and dial design and make 38 or 39 mm watches. Fuck these limited handwinding reissues. Really they need to bring in a strong talented designer with vision for the brand that can devlop a coherent collection taking advantages of the brands strength and giving them better designs. I get the impression that different models are designed by different people entirely with no thought to maintaing a coherent design language. Also some of the special edition dials are executed beautifully and some seem to be slapped together somewhat haphazardly.
