Last thread there were people giving me conflicting advice. I posted this watch a while back and I was told it was fake. Last thread, someone said it might not be. The same model watch definitely exists as 2231.50 ref, but how do I tell if it’s real?

Please explain as you would a 5th grader since I only know the very very basics about watches.

Previously on the titanium Seiko saga
>ex gf gifted me a watch in 2006/7
>fifteen years pass, gf is long gone and watch is long dead
>I, a watch noob, was under the impression it was an automatic and asked for help getting it running
>you guys asked for the model #/any info
>I posted pics of manual
>you explain to me that it's a kinetic
Update
>took it to watch repair shop
>guy wants to run it through some sort of capacitor recharge machine for $45, I say it's 15 years old and probably needs a new one, he's pushy and insists recharge is the right way, I ask if it doesn't work will the $45 roll over to the cost of replacing the capacitor, he laughs in my face
>go to another watch repair shop, explain situation, they say $80-$100 to replace and service the watch, I agree
>they call me a few days later and day this is no kinetic, it's a standard quartz watch
>i say impossible, I have the box and manual and everything, they say well we're looking at it, it's quartz but we replaced the battery and it still doesn't run, needs a service too
>I think they're lying but agree jusy to get it over with
So $80 later I have it back and once again running and now I know that somehow 15 years ago I was given the wrong box/manual with it.
The end.

LV employs two genius watchmakers who make unbelievable haute joiallerie and other one off (or nearly one off) limited watches. Unfortunately these are almost always totally pre-allocated, so you will never see one in the store anywhere. Ralph Lauren has a good relationship with many manufacturers and has released multiple tourbillon pieces using IWC movements. It’s a passion project for him and I’m certain he loses money on the watch division, but the high end stuff is definitely worth a look.

If a watch is automatic you'll see a smooth second hand and with a quartz it'll jump each second, generally.

There are weird exceptions, Seiko has the Spring Drive which is quartz but with a smooth second hand and there are automatics with jumping seconds like the JLC Geophysic.

I have a quartz aquaracer and it has served me well. I have been on many adventures with it and I do actually use it diving. I am considering upgrading to a more high end mechanical watch I can give to my son when he's old enough. It's a choice between a Breitling Navitimer and an Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra. I would buy the Breitling from an AD and get the full warranty plus service but I would go grey market for the Omega because the savings are too high to ignore. Thoughts?

i think any watch your dad wore would be special. Im guessing the breitling would not be the chronograph model? those are bordering on thicc, but they do look good. Most of them come with a leather strap, which would help if you dont have thick wrists. The basic models have a basic movement in them, nothing too special, but the chrono versions do have a niceish movement in them. The omega is a pretty nice design i think. It perhaps suffers from being a little too safe or plain of a watch for some people. It doesnt have a micro-adjust bracelet, but the movements in them are quite good for the price. It will be a scratch magnet tho. The breitling is an iconic design, while the omega is more of a classic design. I think both would age well. Hate to be that guy, but an OP is basically in that same ballpark. You should probably go and try on each model on, and see what works best for you in person.

I did. That was the only point that i was making: commie watch market (the irony of it, huh) is a goldmine for suckers. Muh interesting movements is none of my concern, because what makes a a watch interesting isn't universal to everyone. There are people who collect half a million dollar erotic watches and there are people that are happy with their MVMNts, both have their own perception of what makes a watch great.

I've seen some expensive collections with a Seagull 1963 thrown in there.

For the second question, I've seen quite a few celebrities wear Bell and Ross which you can get used under $3000, but I'd guess a poor person might go for a used Omega or Cartier at that price for the name recognition.

my miyota 9039 movement watch was +5 s/d since I got it a month ago. now suddenly it's -5 s/d. i've always had it dial facing up, the only difference now is the dial is up at an angle. that's like the tiniest difference ever. my miyota 9015 watches are +5~+10 in the same position in the watch box, why can't the 9039???

The Polaris is a generic dive watch design that looks like it's from a microbrand. Even notorious JLC fanboy Tim Mosso has no love for the Polaris, while the LHD is an icon in its own right.
