Can we get a jeans thread going? I've taken the time to do a bunch of clothing shopping this late black friday but have yet to buy some quality jeans. I have always went with Levi 511s or 505s (not to mention Carhart for work) but I want to one up my standard and thought I could learn from /fa/. New clothes, new me as they say.

Pants in general are welcome too.

>> No.17378705

Got my first pair of wranglers recently, they're actually really good for the $20 I paid.
I also ordered a pair of momotaro selvedge (~$210), so I'll have quite the comparison to make.
If you're just looking for work pants, get whatever's cheap and durable. However, if you're looking for longevity, you can go the raw/selvedge route. Or if you're looking for something soft and comfy, you could get a pair with some stretchy stuff. It won't last as long, of course, but it'll definitely be comfortable.

The last time I wore wranglers was in high school I think. They must be as good as levis. I looked up momotaro and wow. Those jeans are expensive but they're super high quality looking. I am just getting into fashion so this is out of my budget, but I will bookmark this store page. I have done shopping at retailers like superdry and the north face. Nothing too crazy but I simply felt bad about my clothing and wanted to invest in it.

Yeah, you can really go down the rabbit hole with denim if you want to. There's no need though, if you're not geeking out over it. You can definitely get good jeans for less than $100.

What really matters is the fit (how relaxed or tight, how tapered, does it suit your body, etc etc). You can also get stuff tailored to fit better if need be.

Just bought a used pair of 514, still waiting for the delivery.

cus I want to try slim straight cut. figure that it make look good on me since I'm skinny and all that. fyi slim straight is not the same as skinny jeans so I don't think I am going to get into a trouble.

Okay, how much of a meme is raw denim? I want a decent pair of jeans, but 300 is pretty steep for what is ultimately going to look like... a pair of jeans. I could buy some really decent trousers for the same money.
Do they really look that cool when you wash for the first time after wearing them? And does the Indigo stain your other clothes for the first few weeks or is that just with cheaper jeans?

I usually buy these worn grey-blueish looking jeans. Can I bleach raw denim jeans to make them lighter after getting the fade?

I spent years trying to find the perfect pair of jeans. I always wrote off japanese selvedge as being stiff as fuck and overpriced. A couple years ago, I walked into Self Edge in Portland and tried on a few pairs and immediately could understand the amount of detail and quality the japanese put into making denim. I took a risk and bought a pair of heavy weight (21 oz) Iron Heart 888s in their overdyed black and have worn them almost daily for the last year and a half. Iron Heart's denim is notorious for having a really immaculate, dense weave, which results in a heavy yet smooth pair of jeans once you break them in. I know I am a little fanboy for Iron Heart in general, but the quality offered by japanese denim in general regardless of what company you decide to go for is like nothing else. I legitimately have no desire to wear any other pair of pants and have since downsized my wardrobe significantly.

People seem to always get tripped up by paying $300+ for a pair of jeans. Once you take that next step, you arguably pay just as much in the long run than if you were to buy any mass produced denim since the pairs of levis are going to immediately get blowouts in the crotch and high friction/tension areas within 1 to 1.5 years with regular wear, whereas you MIGHT get blowouts with one good pair of heavy weight selvedge in that same time frame. Thats not even considering that japanese denim is dyed with natural indigo and produces much more vibrant and beautiful fade contrast once you start breaking them in.

Nice! I’m guessing you went with momotaros? Before they ship those out, I would strongly advise that you make sure the Jean dimensions are going to fit you. Get one of your best fitting pairs of pants and check the dimensions, especially the waist. Selvedge always has more length than necessary and you will end up cuffing the ankles. The rule of thumb I go by is being able to fit my flat palm in the waist band because the first wash will likely result in some shrinkage. These higher end selvedge companies are usually very helpful with any questions you may have about sizing and washing, so definitely reach out to them with questions.

Once you get them, they will be stiff as fuck. This is because companies use starch to preserve the jeans before they are sold. Wear your jeans every day for months, wash once every 3-4 weeks, hang dry, and trust the break in process.

Got them in W32
Had to act now because of fomo at this point. Two pairs I was eyeing were sold out today so I went with the unsanforized denim in narrow tapered.
I‘m more of a W31 nowadays but with the shrinkage I thought buying a W32 might be better, if it’s still too wide I‘ll just try a belt and if that’s still not working I can return them (before washing, wearing ofc).
The Length is one size with Momotaro from what I could tell.

OrSlow are the best RTW denim on the market by a landslide.

Non descriptive, insane neppiness, oldschool, high rise, not too thick yet substantial, thus good all year round, beautiful unfaded washes. The quality doesn't even really show in pictures, you've got to see them in person.

I basically threw away all of the jeans I previously owned after getting my first pair.

I did quite a bit of research into this, OrSlow 105 (basically, a 50's 501 repro made of japanese selvedge) have the highest rise ouf of all of them, barring some super limited run from the Real McCoy from ages ago.

They go extremely well with tailoring for that reason.

Drake's also have a fairly high rise, although it's 2-3 Cm. smaller compared to smilarly sized 105's.

I have a pair of Naked and Famous jeans with a half inch higher rise front and back, but they stretched out so I’ve been keeping them bunched up with a tight belt for months. The new Tanukis are a full 2” smaller in the waist and they better not stretch to the same size.

just got a pair of momotaro jeans, (not the exact ones in your pic but the same brand) and they're already my favorite pair of pants. once they're worn in, they fit like nothing else and the fades after a few months of wearing and your first wash is admittedly pretty cool. they're heavy duty and will last forever if you take care of them. momotaro in particular have tons of really cool "features" that make them fun to wear like the pink inseam stitching, the pockets are lined with a cool print and the buttons have cute details on them. uniqlo has some not bad options for the price if you want to dip your toes into it before dropping $200+ on a good pair of japanese denim. don't worry about bleeding into your other clothes. start with around a 14oz pair and a regular cut, then you can explore other cuts and weights if you like them. they are stiff when you first get them but people overstate how bad it is and how long it takes to break them in. just wear them like you would any other pants; get some work done in them, sweat in them and in a week or two they'll be noticeably comfortable. when you wash them for the first time, ideally after a few months and when they start smelling bad, turn them inside out and wash them by themselves then hang dry. that's it.

What do you mean by durable? Do you have a general idea of denim weights (14 oz, 21 oz, etc)? Raw selvedge denim is not going to look as great when you first purchase it. If you ask me, the only way you can really enjoy the worn in appearance of black jeans that are also "durable" is to buy a black pair of selvedge denim and wear the fuck out of them until they start to fade in, collect oils, form patinas. If you want black jeans that are ACTUALLY durable, I would suggest browsing Iron Heart's overdyed black denim selections, especially their 21 oz weight. Jeans that are considered durable is going to be at the minimum 18 oz, which is going to be difficult to find below $300.

Skinny and slim jeans are for millenials aged 30-35 who want to relish in their mid 2000s to 2010 glory days. Jeans are a timeless article of clothing, but skinny and slim fits are arguably a trend and did not last very long, probably because its too gay and just sucks to have zero crotch mobility. Relaxed tapered and straight tapered are arguably the endgame for denim. You get the classic mid-high rise with a relaxed crotch and thigh, but you also get the awesome silhouette of the lower leg that tapers down to a cuffed ankle.

The taper occurs from the knee down to the ankle. Relaxed fits usually have slightly more room in the thigh and crotch region, along with a slightly higher rise in some cases. Straight fits are the gray area between relaxed tapered and slim tapered.

>>17380006
Honestly if you keep buying shitty quality fast fashion denim from department stores only to find out that they aren't offering the traditional mid to high rise relaxed/straight fit with the optional taper anymore and are catering to whatever new trends come and go, the logical conclusion to your dilemma is to invest a little more money in buying some selvedge denim. There's an entire universe of selvedge denim makers, all of which offer the classic slim, straight, relaxed fits with the standard mid rise, making it easy to find whats right for you. The edge that these companies have is that their denim is usually more durable and wont blow out nearly as soon due to the denser weaves offered from constructing the denim with a shuttle loom, and they pay much more attention to the small little details with the structural integrity of jeans, such as doing double to triple stitching at a minimum and not cutting corners so to speak. A small list of some commonly known selvedge denim names are Momotaro, Sugar Cane, Iron Heart, Naked and Famous, and Samurai. Each of these companies have their own weave patterns and dyeing processes, resulting in differences of texture and fades characteristics

Fuck yeah.
Soaked them in hot water and agitated them in cold water for a bit to loosen up some excess indigo, and now they're hanging to dry. Can't wait to wear them.

Not him, but straight fit is generally the most "timeless" look for jeans. Yes, slim and skinny fit will come and go every other generation, but generally the straight fit has always had its place in every era. If it wasn't worn by the rock n rollers in the 60s, it was worn by cowboys and rural folk at that same time period. This is however only one advantage that the standard straight fit has over slim/skinny fits. The other main advantage is the mobility that comes with more open room in the crotch and thighs. The original purpose of denim was for utility, so having a skinny fit and not being able to move around without quickly blowing out the crotch of your jeans pretty much defeats that purpose. There are always ways you can incorporate straight fits into your outfit, but slim/skinny jeans are a little more fringe and end up being less versatile fashion-wise.

What are some good jean brands nowadays? I had a single pair of stone washed mid-rise jeans from Bonobos for the last 5 years, and those finally broke up. I don't live in the US anymore. Acne's own website is sold out on stonewashed models. Same goes for Pt01 and Pt05. There's a pair which looks much like my previous one from SLP, but that's 500 euros and I think the double the price to Acne or whatever comes solely from brand, but the price is not out of my range.

When you buy a new pair of indigo selvedge denim, a lot of people will immediately give it an initial warm 2-hour soak followed by a cold rinse in the washing machine. This should do a pretty good job at getting any of the initial volatile dye off so that you don't stain everything.

Jean waists are pretty stretchy. I'm wearing a pair now that I'm really disappointed in because they fit well initially but then stretched out. Now they only fit correctly after being washed and shrunken up. I guess I'll have to wash them frequently.

I have another pair of Oni secret denim that I haven't worn yet and am nervous about the stretch in. If your brand new jeans aren't quite tight in the waist, then they are too lose.

You'll get less contrast in your fades. A lot of those come from the stiff fabric creasing when they are raw and unwashed.

so like this contrast? to get something like this after a year or so I shouldn't soak them?

>> No.17388656

>>17388626
I think that's right. When you soak/wash them, you will remove indigo from all of the fabric and create a more uniform color fading. A little bit more fading will occur n the places where it has been rubbed, but also in places without wear. That pair is still pretty dark in some places so I bet it was not washed often.

>> No.17388737

>>17388626
>>17388656
I disagree with this. The amount of indigo that comes out on an initial soak and rinse when you first purchase is extremely negligible. All it does is remove starch and indigo that’s going to bleed without really changing the color to a noticeable degree. You will absolutely still be able to get high contrast fades if you refrain from washing again for at least 6 months after your first soak/rinse

>> No.17388790

>>17388737
Full disclosure, I only have 1 pair of jeans that I bought raw, but when I washed them for the first time they went from being such a black navy that they were nearly black, to a significantly lighter but still "dark wash" navy.

As a rule, the less you wash - the higher your contrast will be. I'm not saying you can't get contrast if you wash initially.
