/btg/ - WESCO STITCHDOWN Edition

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and don't wear them daily for too long

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.

It is very good, low profile, comfy, grippy.
I do not know if it will last a long time (feels a little soft) but I hope it will because Carmina will butcher any boots you send to them for a resole. I have heard only horror stories.

One option I was thinking, inspired by the last thread, is to get an EB boot in Tarnsjo leather.
This is a grain leather from a Swedish tannery that is supposed to be very comfy and durable. EB makes stuff out of it (pic related).

Another option maybe is Horween Zug grain, that seems to be near the top of waterproof and durable leathers.

That just looks ridiculous. You just know the guy intentionally bumped and scraped his feet along anything he could find, all the while telling himself "Oh, another sign of natural wear!".

From experience, it depends on how often you wear them. Wear them 'half days' to let your feet heal (4 hours a day, swap with an old set of boots). They break in faster when wet. Maybe it doesn't look as bad in this pic, but that's about a quarter inch, more if you try and open it. it's a multigenerational thing, I've been wearing bean boots for nearly my entire adult life. I figured these were nice because they're essentially slip on shoes that you can wear during slushy days, and they'll resole them for $40 a pop, better than any cobbler's price. Because there is so little leather, you're almost getting a free shoe each time you buy it, because the entire rubber outsole and insole is replaced.

Question, a price vs practicality one
I work as an electrician. I get boots for free from my employer if they are below $150 or I can get $150 toward a pair of work boots. They aren't supposed to be the highest quality boots, but I recognize that this is an opportunity to finally get boots that look good, and I could wear outside of work that can hold up to yardwork.
I could pay $100 in + $150 for a pair of moctoe Thorogoods, or get danners for free. They both have composite toes. I also recognize that if I'm paying $250 for a pair of boots, they're probably not effay to begin with, so I should probably get Red Wings for everything else and just keep getting cheap work boots for free. On the examples of the 2030 I’ve seen the widest part of the last doesn’t line up with the widest part of the sole so you can feel the welt like you say. They started off with George Cleverley
Now I don't doubt they used to be one of the best bespoke shoemakers in the world, but in the last few years all I've heard are horror stories.

The rest were the usual suspects, John Lobb, Berluti, Yanagimachi etc. A bit of "yesterdays" names.

If I had to pick 6 today I'd probably say Lobb, Meccariello, Bemer, G&G, Fukuda and probably ACME

I'm the owner of those, can confirm they look pretty good and are ok quality but I'm sure there's much better around. Also while they're waterproof and decently grippy, the leather is quite thin so I gotta wear warm socks if I want to use them in the cold

the look is very generic as well, just search around for derby/service/country boots in black nubuck/greasy. I bought those because I got them during a 50% sale so I paid like less than 180 eur for them

Do multiple day deep dive into buying a pair of boots. Comparing basically all the "service boots" so I will know which one to get. Getting really close to picking a pair and then I realize they're all American made and basically impossible to get in Europe.

Really makes you think. I guess I stick with my sneakers. I guess only Americans are allowed to grow up, become men, and wear big boy shoes.
