I've heard occasionally that black suits are overused and should be only worn to very specific occasions. Is this also true for black derbies?

How about tan derbies, are they a better choice?
Could you tell me some tips for wearing tan derbies?

Nothing wrong with either color. You just have to coordinate them

What? I pretty much only wear black derby shoes, with black pants or jeans. Couldn't pay me to wear brown shoes, but that's my own personal taste.

Black is a formal colour and Derbies are inherently a less formal shoe than an Oxford. If you had only two pairs of shoes, you'd go for Oxfords in black and Derbies in some shade of brown. Having said that, you likely have more than two pairs of shoes, so there's no problem in getting a pair of black Derbies to wear with darker, casual outfits during autumn and winter. The same applies to brogues.

I have a specific dislike for tan Derbies but only because they're the shoe of choice in Sydney for poorly dressed real estate agents and the tradesmen wearing a "nice" outfit to a wedding or the races. Try a mid-brown or something a little darker. I like a tan country brogue, though, pic related.

all the fashion and color rule memes are outdated. pretty much all of them can be completely ignored. people wear sneakers with suits now, literally nobody gives a fuck if you wear the "wrong" color of derbies, besides those three guys on any internet forum who are fully convinced some prep handbook they got at the public library is the new bible

Fucking hick

The rules are from older dress codes for formality, in decending order
>Black Leather > Dark Brown/Dark Dyes > Tan/Light dyes > Suede
>Cap Toe Oxfords > Derbys/Wingtips/Brougeing > Straps > Slip-ons
>Black Suits > Navy/Charcoal Suits > Light Suits > Brown/Country wear/Tweed > Non suit outfits
Like other anons are saying, the clash in formality makes it weird, and also wearing clean shoes outside an office is rare nowadays and nobody, let alone anyone who somone who posts on 4chan is going to meet, is going to care about these dress codes

Can I wear light tan derbies as in OP's pic with light grey, mid grey or dark grey jeans in an informal setting? (for instance like pic related)
