Help me decide what diver I should get for my collection. I currently only have a Speedmaster Moonwatch 3861. I'm considering either a Seiko 62mas SPB143, a Tudor BB58, or save up for a Rolex Submariner. It might be boring but which one of these do you think goes well with my Speedy?

I'd get the BB58 personally. Maybe a blue one so you don't have two black dialed watches. Ultimately you should just get whichever watch you want most.

I just have a thing for black dial watches. Feels like it fits better with everything else I wear. I looked into the blue BB58 and it's so much cheaper than Black for some reason. I've also thought about saving up and getting a sub just to get the Rolex out of the way. Sometimes the Seiko SPB143 looks so good and it's cheap compared to the other two.

On most mechanicals it just does 31 every month so you have to set it every few months. There are annual calendars that can account for all the days except February 29th on the leap year, and there are perpetual calendars who can get that right as well.

Tbh, I'd just go try them on. Might as well buy them in person if it's not too much more money too. Not sure if your financial situation (maybe a rolex or tudor is just a casual throwaway purchase for you - no hate but it might make a difference), but a luxury watch is usually somewhat of a big purchase so I'd try and get the most out of the experience. Always feels more special when you buy it in person and you really know when a watch is for you when you try it on. To answer your question and not be a useless shitter, I'd either second the pelagos 39 or do the bb58. But a sub is a sub and if that is really what you want I'd get that. For seiko I kind of like that new slim turtle, but havent tried it on. The spb143 looks sweet but it's a bit chunky for its size and I find that thinner watches look and feel better on me personally

Ah it's a Kinetic! It has a rotor that charges the capacitor that then powers the watch. They go empty fast are known to fail quickly, especially if the watch has been sitting for some time. You should try wearing the watch for a day to try and generate some electricity to see if the capacitor is still working or not. If not it's usually not worth repairing, i don't know if someone would even know how to and be willing to repair it.

I'm not asking for domed/bubble crystals, those would look stupid on that kind of watch. There is a big difference between a slight curve to avoid that harsh glare that a flat crystal gives you, and a ridiculous neo-vintage bubble. Like what they do on literally all their larger watches (picrel), what's wrong with this? The only answer is they think the customer won't spend an extra $50 or whatever it would cost to make the crystal not look cheap.

It was new tech at the time, combining the automatic charging from mechanical watches with quartz accuracy, but the capacitors weren't good enough yet and they went empty quickly if you weren't wearing the watch constantly, and after some time they would get 'weak' and 'tired' and would hold less and less charge.

You, with a blueballed-looking, obese and swollen "curved" (sounds gay) crystal.
The sun shines, I reflect it into your eyes. The powerful beam of light blinds you momentarily, snowblinded. My powerful FLAT based crystal destroys your ego in an instant.
You look at your watch, its curve makes your beam of light look weird and cringe. Flaccid. You don't even know how to aim it properly. You realize your mistake, and cry.

This is why I exclusively own watches with flat crystals.

"Comfy" as in below the cutoff for people I know IRL looking at me the way middle class people look at poor people wearing clothes with big logos of italian designers spammed all over them in big letters? I guess about $2k. I could probably go up to $3500 and wear that in front of dates or casual acquaintances without feeling incredibly self conscious but if I wore a $3500 watch to work, colleagues and my boss would definitely think less of me and if I wore that in front of family they'd think I was hanging out with the wrong crowd.

I've often wondered why watch reviewers don't test water resistance as well. Pretty easy to take it somewhere and would put to rest some of the water resistance autism. I suspect that most watches will over perform since I dont see the gaskets that use being vastly different between watches in the same brand. I bet it more has to do with how rigorous the quality control is for particular models rather than the watch itself (dive watches with crazy depth ratings and dress chronos aside. I could see most 30, 50 and 100m watches doing much better than "survive hand washing " etc. I also wonder how prolific this is in the industry and if the old maxims on wr are obsolete

Ok but malls are still a thing where you live, so I think we just live in different realities.Sampling from my immediate circle of close family and people I see on a regular basis, here's a full account of the watches they wear daily, nothing left out because the number of shitters is actually negligible. I am only counting one watch per person, the most commonly worn watch in their rotations:

>apple watch
>another apple watch (different person)
>yet another apple watch (also different person)
>yet ANOTHER apple watch
>a hamilton khaki
>a GP world timer
>a rolex day-date
>an actual omega speedmaster
>a seiko 5
>a seiko skx (different person)
>a cartier tank
>a nomos orion
>a VC patrimony
>a tag aquaracer quartz lady's

Or to summarize:
4 apple watches, 1 high tier luxury, 7 mid tier luxury, 4 shitters. Not a whole lot of rolex either. I am leaving out the watch of one person who is a high functioning autisticus extremus, most of the other people on this list would not identify as a "watch person" but nonetheless does give a shit (like they might visit hodinkee every so often or browse the local watch boutiques when on vacation). The who I would guess doesn't really care about watches at all is the tag owner, I would bet good money she bought it because she "heard tag was good" then again my relationship with her is one of polite tolerance as I am forced to see her through a mutual, the rest of these people, except 3 of the apple watch owners, care enough about watches to meet your admittedly rather lax criterion of "knowing that PP exists" which I'm pretty sure anyone with a passing familiarity with current hip hop music would probably pass

Pretty much all watches that I've owned (I've lost count) have exhibited this behavior to a greater or lesser degree, the worst offender was/is a 1960s seiko lord marvel that was about as bad as the oris jumping like 3-5 minutes if you skip the "crown wiggle" technique, but even new watches do this very slightly. I'm kinda surprised that a guy who runs a watch youtube channel and calls himself an "engineer wannabe" has never run into this before.

I'm not saying it should do that to such an extreme degree on a brand new, ostensibly not-cheap watch, just questioning this guy's experience with watches, considering I barely even consider myself a "watch guy" and I have a ton of experience with this.

It's super inconvenient for setting the time but its mad fun and very satisfying to fuck around with and watch the seconds hand twirl around the dial. These movements have a super tiny stepper motor you can hear whirring away with a super rapid ticking sound when you do it too which is really neat IMO. The setting method for the hour is really cool as well if you travel a lot and need to change timezones quickly as it jumps in hour intervals that you cant fuck up if the hands are aligned correctly.

That said, I probably have autism for being this fascinated with how these weird turds work but whatever lol. Here's a pic of a super bad example I bought to harvest parts from a while ago. Stepper motor can be seen on the right in pic related connected to the gear with the black corrosion all over it.

If you want one, some old Buler and Lanco watches were fitted with 2030 and 2031 movements - Check eBay and you might get lucky and find a badly listed one for around 20 - 30 quid - Most Tissot examples are Seastars from the 70's and are currently bringing 50+ in non-running condition but you can find a nice one around 100 - 120 if you're patient. Sorry for the tl;dr response btw.

As someone who owns a PRX as well, I think they both have their strengths and weaknesses. The Seastar has much nicer dial finishing IMO (mine was water damaged when I got it, so it's a bad example), but the PRX has a nicer quality of finishing on the case and bracelet. The Seastar is from the 70's though, so I suppose this is really a matter of preference of modern vs vintage.

One thing the Seastar absolutely mogs the PRX with is the clasp though - The PRX has a butterfly clasp with no true microadjustment outside of half-links, where the Seastar has a traditional clasp with a lot of room for microadjustment. Although I don't struggle getting a fit, why they changed this specific aspect of the watch is beyond me and it pisses me off.
