The Willard has been satisfactory fellas.
Comfy cushion case.
Fits smaller than it’s proportions suggest, mostly due to short lug-to-lug.
Polishing is killer.

I had an Uncle chocolate bar strap on my Willard for the better part of the year but the keepers broke off. Not sure I'd recommend them.
For now it's back on the bracelet that I'm not very enchanted with. Its character is not really suited to it I think, regardless of the quality of the bracelet.

Also I had a prime shitpost ready but the new thread took too long and I forgot what I was going to write to incite the rabble.

Lmao, my dad's been wearing the same Datejust since 1979. He wore it when we climbed Kilimanjaro and he wore it at my wedding. The only time he's not worn it has been when it was being serviced.

I used to own a large number of watches that I justified via increasingly silly reasons.
(I was one of those guys that needed a watch to "tick every box". Chronograph, vintage, ultra-thin, high horology, all that shit.)

I cannot bring myself to only own one watch, but I've limited myself to two: a sports watch and dress watch. The sports watch is currently a G-Shock Mudman and the dress watch is a JLC Reverso.

If I ever get a new watch, it will have to replace one or the other. That said, I still love talking about watches.

Technically two of these could be viewed as "ticking boxes", but not because I think every collection "needs" these things, I just like divers and chronographs. If I had to have one watch it would be the Citizen hands-down. But I also really like wearing divers and chronographs. I could pretty easily cut down to four with those three and the G-Shock, but the rest I also like for some sort of historical significance.

The Omega Speedmaster I assume everybody knows, third watch on the top row, that was the "first" watch worn on the moon (quotation marks because it's technically tied with a Bulova prototype that later became the Lunar Pilot).

The Laco Leipzig, to the right of the Speedy is a fleiger pilot's watch, it's what German Luftwaffe were given during World War II. This one is specifically a type-B dial, with the hour markers on an inner ring and the minutes printed around the outside, worn by the observer in the plane that was coordinating the runs. Laco was also one of the original five(?) manufacturers who were contracted to make them during the way. Others were like A Lange & Sohne, IWC, Wempe, Stowa...I think that's it.

The Stowa Marine, bottom left, is modeled after a naval deck watch, which like a big pocket watch that would stay in a wooden box in the captain's chambers, they had to be particularly accurate because they used them to calculate their position using longitude and latitude.

The black field watch next to that is a Benrus, and that's the model that was issued to US soldiers during the Vietnam war. Not much else than that, but I figured if I got a field watch it should be a significant historical model.

The Sturmanskie, the yellow-dial one beside that, was the first watch to be worn in space. Yuri Gagarin, a Russian astronaut, wore it on his first un-landed shuttle into orbit. It was the watch the Russians gave to pilots as they graduated flight school. Fun little piece of trivia, it was un-landed craft (meaning they had to jump out) and they had to parachute down with shotguns on their backs because they could land somewhere with bears. Russians are built different.

Some more significant than others, and none of them are (or will be) vintage ones that were actually used that way, but it's a fun little daydream when you check your watch as your day is passing slowly to think about how they were used as legitimate tools in the past.

>> No.17353192

>>17353190
Oh, I should also add, that Stowa is a bit larger than I'd like but that's because it actually uses the same movement that you'd find in those deck pocket watches back in the day. Neat little tidbit.

...and I realized that I had close to 6 figures tied up in fucking watches. I work from home most of the time and no one I know cares about watches.

A couple of reasons: it's the most comfortable, I liked the way it looked best, it's steel and I didn't like wearing gold.
If the Day-Date were white gold, I might have actually kept it. It was the classic yellow gold-champagne dial combination. Beautiful watch, but I just felt like some greaseball Italian when I wore it.

Also, so many of the watches were redundant. Like, the Explorer II, I bought that as an "adventure-travel" watch but, whenever I actually went to some place where an ExpII would thrive, I had the G-Shock, which was even better.
All the dive watches? Yes, I do dive...and I have a dive computer, like every diver of the last four decades.

The complicated watches were cool but, again, I could enjoy them without spending 10k+ on them. Knowing the technology exists is pleasure enough, since I never wore them when they sat in the box or on the winder.

I actually had a rolex, I stopped wearing it the 3rd or 4th time someone was like "rolex, eh? nice!"

I don't want a chopard or some other obscure shit, I want something semi-mainstream, not ultra ultra common, but non-autistic. something like how jens stoltenberg has that omega that is completely boring shit, but also not a watch anyone can talk shit about. something like that, but not an omega, maybe one level less from the mainstream than that, but not two levels less.

The watch itself is great, but they wear large. Can you find any watch that's about the same diameter and lug-to-lug to try on in person.

Although, if you get it from a dealer on C24, you can always return it if you don't like the fit.

But as for the watch itself? Yeah, it's great. The LUC 01.01-L movement is a real gem. Don't quote me on it, but I think Michel Parmigiani (the Parmigiani Fleurier guy) designed that movement. I know he designed others for LUC.

The number of watches that actually maintain their value is vanishingly small. It's basically just some Rolexes and some Pateks.

Some of the other issues are going to be parts availability. You won't have the equipment to make wheels and pinions without spending an absolute shitload, so you're reliant on being able to order factory parts, which could be either unavailable entirely or off-limits to a hobbyist. These guys are right though. Rolex simply ticks all the boxes.
>amazing quality and movements

And I'll add these two
>iconic designs
>raise in value
There are a lot of watches I like but let's be honest : it's a shit "hobby" that attracts the worst kind of people (wageslaves with an inferiority complex).
Unironically, the final redpill about watches is to just get a Rolex and be done with terrible hobby. You'll get the most accurate movements, the best designs ever made and you can make your money back in a few hours if you need to. Also watchnerds will respect your choice and you might impress a few people who know shit about watches.

I know it's not an easy redpill to swallow but deep down you all know it's true.

>The Omega Speedmaster I assume everybody knows, third watch on the top row, that was the "first" watch worn on the moon (quotation marks because it's technically tied with a Bulova prototype that later became the Lunar Pilot).

100% wrong. The Speedmaster is THE first watch worn on the moon, by definition. The Lunar Pilot was a backup watch worn on Apollo 15 (not Apollo 11,12,14, wasn't there) when the Speedmaster was accidentally whacked by its astronaut, David Scott, and the crystal broke (popped off). Bulova only sent the one up, and had to recruit Scott personally since NASA never certified any Bulova watch, ever. They approved it for the one sortie for Scott, but never certified. The Bulova sold now isn't even space rated, since its fucking quartz and will shit itself once the battery leaks due to zero pressure in the vacuum of space. Also, the greatest space watch in history is the Fortis. More space walks and hours in space than every other watch combined.
