Really depends on the model. Something like the Santos? Yes. Something like a quartz Tank in steel? No.

Cartier makes a wide variety of watches at a lot of different price points. Their entry-level shit is surprisingly poor quality for the price.

In fact, it probably shouldn't be a Montblanc. Their quality control has gone to absolute shit in the last couple years. They write like shit now.

They're basically just status symbols at this point. Everyone recognizes the white star as being expensive and, because they don't know anything about pens, assume they're the best.

All things being equal, the Explorer II is the one to get, but chronographs and GMT watches serve different purposes.

Looks and taste notwithstanding, do you travel to different timezones a lot or do you find yourself needing to time events more often?

Don't worry about buying used. Do your research on the buyer. If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Check what kind of buyer protection you have. Ask questions, ask for high-res images. Don't be afraid to walk away from a deal if you're getting uncomfortable. Be patient, don't just buy the first example you come across.

>> No.17341749

>>17341733
>They're basically just status symbols at this point.
Yeah. Old ones from pre-1990 wrote beautifully. You can tell that the new ones are not being bought by experienced writers but by people who want to flex. The nibs are incredibly stiff now, because Montblanc knows that their buyers mostly write with ballpoints.

Of course, do you actually want to impress "pen nerds"? No. So unless you actually care about writing, just get the Montblanc and flex on the poors.

I understand worrying about buying a watch off WUS or Facebook marketplace, where you just have to trust the other guy's word, but chrono24 and eBay actually have good buyer protections.

How does the Planet Ocean get worse every time it's updated?

Gen 1: 42mm x 14mm
Gen 2: 42mm x 15.7mm
Gen 3: 43.5 x 16.5mm

These are just the standard ones, not the chronos or Ultra-Deep versions. I get that they're adding more luxury features, but it's still only the same 600m WR. Why's it keep getting thicker? Not to mention heavier.

>Speedmaster is something different
I get that you want a chronograph, but most people will buy a Speedmaster because they want an iconic prestigious watch in the first place, and couldn't get a Submariner or a GMT Master. Very few people buy a watch for their complications.
I don't think the Speedmaster is a very good watch to be honest. It's handwinding which makes it a pain the ass to use, and the bracelet is awful as on every Omegas. Not to mention Omega's cringe marketing and boomer core clientele.

If I had to buy a chronograph in that price range, I'd get a Zenith.
It's still a Rolex cope but at least it's not a fucking Omega and the brand has a solid history of making chronographs (including for Rolex).

>Maybe but Speedmaster is something different and arguably better than some of the rolex offerings
No, not really. It's nothing different. If you strip away all the moonwatch hype and delete all the fawning youtube videos, it's just a boring chrono. It doesn't look bad but that's because it's so bland.

Plus, Speedyspergs are really just insufferable.

Nobody buys calendar and dress watches in 2022.

Rolex used to make beautiful calendar watches too. They stopped making them because no one bought them. The Cellini line is down to one model that they sell less than a thousand of per year.

Companies can conform to some sperg's gatekeeping idea of purity and go bankrupt, or they can make what sells while the purists can enjoy plentiful and inexpensive vintage dress watches by the bucketful.

Power reserve is one of the biggest memes of all.
With an if you wear your watch everyday, there's zero chance it ever winds down. With a hand-winding watch, you wind it in the morning before putting it on and it will never wind down.

The people who care about power reserve are guys with "rotations" that they like to keep wound at all times so they can constantly swap watches.

I think you misunderstand the watch.
"Marine" is its nickname. It's actually "Marine Mammal Fat."

Fat people get food everywhere, so the watch needs water resistance to prevent the case from getting filled with gravy.
They need a rubber strap because their greasy skin ruins a leather strap in a week.
They need a big date because diabetes is destroying their eyesight.

Federico loves his, too.

I see your reasoning and you're somewhat right. It shouldn't work, but somehow it works extremely well.

The old Breguet Marine was much better because it knew what it was: a Breguet plus a little water resistance. Still not much, only 50m, but it kept the classic Breguet features like the welded lugs, etc.

When they tried to turn the Marine into an out-and-out sports watch it became a sales disaster because the design is completely incoherent. That's also why ADs will offer you 30% off on the spot without even needing to ask.

Nomos survives because they're inexpensive and normies seem to actually like some of their designs.

If you get a first gen Planet Ocean with the 2500D movement, then there's no risk of the movement failing.
The 2500C movement had the 2-level coaxial escapement (which George Daniels called "Extra Flat") and it had issues with excess wear on the gear train, IIRC. The 2500D movement had the 3-level coaxial escapement and it's had no known issues. The 8xxx/9xxx series movements all use the 3-level escapement.

I've had a 2500D powered Planet Ocean for 10 years now. I've never had it serviced, it's never missed a beat and still runs at about +1.5s/day.

The easiest way is to open up the watch. The 2500C will have "2500C" engraved on the baseplate, while the 2500D will just have "2500" on the baseplate, but have the serial number engraved on the balance cock.
If you can't get a look at the movement, the 2500D watches' date wheel uses the modern Omega font. An easy tell will be that the "4" has a pointy top, not a flat top.
Watches with serial numbers starting with 8525 are usually 2500D as well.

They are typically more expensive when advertised as such, but if the seller doesn't know the difference and just sells it as a normal SMPO, then the price will be the same.

Really, though, nothing will ever scratch the itch like the real thing. Just start saving and get a pre-owned safe queen. You can get a quartz Tank Must for around 2000 bucks. They're only about 3000 new. That's a watch you can keep forever or, if you don't like it, can easily sell it and recoup some of your money. You can never sell a Longines or an Oris without taking a horrific depreciation hit.
